Here's the problem. It's way too easy to inadvertently kill an innocent person with a gun. Therefore, to own a gun, you SHOULD be highly competent from an educational, training, physical, and mental standpoint. Period. One innocent human life is enough. Could be your own child, could be you. I'm all for freedom, but when it comes to certain things, the freedom needs to be merited and with no exceptions. A gun, whether fired at a target or a living thing, still can fulfill it's function only through destruction. Here's the problem. It's way too easy to inadvertently kill an innocent person with a gun. Therefore, to own a gun, you SHOULD be highly competent from an educational, training, physical, and mental standpoint. Period. One innocent human life is enough. Could be your own child, could be you. I'm all for freedom, but when it comes to certain things, the freedom needs to be merited and with no exceptions. It should be a huge achievement and damn hard to own a gun. It's way too easy right now.

Whatever; Mexico also has Cancun and Cozumel and Cartegena. And what's wrong with Calderone calling on America to pass real assault weapons control legislation? I'm not offended by that, and believe me, the politicians aren't going to do anything based on his mandate (no matter how much we might owe to Mexico). I meant what's the purpose of having a deadly automatic weapon like that outside of a war. And nobody's putting limits on the Constitution by calling for sensible gun control, it's a safety issue, and it doesn't violate the Constitution any more than the helmet laws speed limits do. And you don't need to be armed to be free in a Democracy; the Bill of Rights is supposed to gaurantee that. Also, nobody said anything about disallowing people to seek redress by peaceful means.

My point is that the right to bear arms is one of 10 rights that were so important that some of the founding fathers fought to have them specifically listed. You're right, no one should have to "quantify" why they should have freedom of speech, or any rights listed in the Bill of Rights. But the 2nd Amendment (the one I suppose you're referring to), states that a well trained militia (National Guards) should be maintained. It doesn't mean that everyone has a right to own an UZI or a tech 9 for christ's sake. I ask again, WHY would anybody want or need weapons like those outside of war?

I have a 12 year old son and while he has been throughly trained in the use and handling of firearms his friends have not. Personally, I think fear of a loaded weapon is pretty healthy. And swimming pools, toasters, cars and doctors are things designed or trained to assist society, guns can only fulfill their purpose through destruction. And I DO happen to advocate safer electric applicances, swimming pools, etc. Not banning them outright.

well, maybe "assist" was the wrong word to use regarding pools and toasters; what I meant was that they were designed to offer recreation to people, and doctors were here to assist people. Anyway, I never said anything about the size of your penis or anybody else's, I meant that some gun owners I've spoken with seem to recieve a "feeling" of manhood from handling a gun or other large dangerous weapon. I personally don't get that. And I won't live my life afraid of "invasion".

Some people do consider target shooting a form of recreation; the difference is in the instrument itself. A gun, whether fired at a target or a living thing, still can fulfill it's function only through destruction. I'm not trying to convince you of anything here; this is related to a personal opinion of mine. I know, though, that the world would be a safer place without firearms, don't you? And I don't get your comment about doctors; I meant their in their present capacity.

The only way to make the world safe would seem to be to remove humans. That said, you should be less fearful of the gun and more fearful of the wielder.
