if i buy this electric car im gona save myself money ?? so if i buy a new petrol car at £7000 and after 10 years i realistically spend £2000 on parts and repair, drive at least 5000miles per year at £1.39 per gallon of petrol as it is where i live. that would be £69500 plus price of car and maintainance = 78500. where i live i could buy a house for that lol please tell me how much cheaper it would be to buy an electric car, charge it and maintain it for 10 years. many thanks
Now I know why car industry people don't like the idea of swapable batteries - if they can force you to own a non swap battery - they can slug you for $19,000 every 5 years when it dies!
At the begining of the industrial reveloution we had a chance to go electric. People warned of hitting the unstoppable oil gusher as Cheveron is doing now off Brazil and BP did and is doing in the gulf by tapping a preasure source man has no ability to cap. JEPORDIZING ALL LIFE ON EARTH. It`s a pity we are led by such industrialist TRASH in the first place. We benefit from a toxic doom and shorter lives while afew thrive in riches...
Once you can drive about 300 or more miles on one battery charge, the cars will be viable. They have to be attractive to all the public, not just those whose idealism trumps practicality. Until that 300-mile thresh hold is attained, the cars will be "nice toys" for those with plenty of disgressionary income.
(1) An electric car has no gearbox, valves, clutch, muffler, or exhaust and requires no spark plugs, no filters, and - no oil. There are no regular visits to the dealership for an EV. No oil changes, no filters, even brake pads last two-to-three times longer than in conventional cars, because EVs use regenerative braking to recapture the energy that would otherwise be lost while braking.
@Already1have (2) Your first trip to the dealership with an EV for scheduled maintenance is at 40,000 miles to check the brake pads. Eventually, you'll need new wiper blades and tires. But that's about it!
@Already1have yeah, but electric cars r slow, low on power, probably more uneconomical to produce than normal cars & their fuel runs out quicker than in conventional cars, not to mention the way they capture electricity from the brakes is from friction, in turn makes it less efficent.
@TheRguru1 No, Just click "show more" on the video and read.. With Better Place, electric cars become cheaper than gasoline (normal) cars because electric cars are sold without the battery. (electric car battery costs around $19,000) Also electric cars have unlimited range due to 1 minute battery swap. The Better Place electric car Renault Fluence ZE is not slow at all. Goto the official web site and check it out.
I'm curious, how many car makers have signed up to use the same size, same location, same access battery pack from Better Place so far? I know Nissan and Renault are interested. Anyone else? I hope this isn't just another expensive fad that will phase out like Hydrogen Fuel Cells did.
Electric cars with a price higher than gasoline cars (Volt, Leaf) ) will only be bought by 1-2% of car drivers worldwide over 10 years. THAT'S LIKE NOTHING!! Toyota Prius is the proof. In 13 years, it captured less than 2% of the worldwide car market even though they are only $4,000 more expensive than any new gasoline cars.
It'll be obsolete within 10-15 years in the public sector, not a great business model.
with battery tech that can charge within sub 15minute times already on the horizon Scib i miev for 2012, and ranges reaching 300miles plus (2012 telsa model S) the only way it'll work is for fleets or large transport e.g trucks, buses, vans, taxis
@eldictator1 The Nissan Leaf' which is the cheapest e-car it's battery costs $18,000!! making the Leaf cost $33,000 Because Better Place will be selling the cars without that incredibly expensive battery packs.. Better Place cars will be cheaper than $5,000 than ANY new gasoline cars..Better Place business model will only be obsolete if car battery prices fall below $2,000 each. That kind of technology to make car batteries so cheap will require at least 2-3 decades if not more..
I've watched Shai Agassi's interviews and lectures. The man is a genius (and his kids are too, I go to the same school they do), and I'm absolutely sure he is making the future with Better Place.
I love the idea, but as long as it's not significantly cheaper and "trendier" to drive electric cars, people will not give a fuck, and continue running on gas.
@Aleque They've done studies that show the opposite; when consumers are presented with a choice between a regular product and one that they know is more friendly to the environment AND MORE EXPENSIVE, the majority will choose the latter.
I got this from the book Collapse, by Jared Diamond. He cites a study in which consumers were presented the choice between ordinary lumber and lumber marked with a sticker showing it to be sustainably harvested. (They didn't just mark regular wood, btw).
As batteries get cheaper and increase in range BPlace will go after the same with 100 mile range (with battery switch station doesn't matter cause they have unlimited range) thus their brand new EV's will cost $5,000 or less!!!
a better place ass we all leaving this world soon yeah its kool the charger thing but changin the world only god can do that not ya so stop it just stop it.
If Agassi sell this idea round the world, better place will be one of the hugest companys of the world (like microsoft) and he getting rich like bill gates !!!
I have my doubts. First off, if a recharging station has a lot of cars waiting to swap, will there be enough replacement batteries? Second, there must be a industry accepted standard. What about converted cars?
@SYN7HOR This is a fantastic Idea put all the control of the power pack we have in the hands of an organisation so when and if they want they can just flick the remote switch and of we go. Marvellous I still say we are spending and wasting recourses in the wrong area we should be concentrating those efforts on hydrogen. Do you know why they will not go hydrogen? Because once they do they can't control it.
@SYN7HOR Nahthis is a shit idea it is to controlled people just want to fill up and drive not pull into a carwarsh and pay for a battery servivce like owning a mobile phone and being comntrolled on a contract.
What happens with these cars when they are in traffic jams? At Stop Lights? Do the motors shut themselves off? Or do they continue to run like dinosaur cars now and suck the battery down?
electic cars do not need to use energy when stopped and are easy to restart. lol it is amost like you never understood how electric motors work. They are in your house. Fans for example
So very true. Some think he wants to be the involved with OPEC, but I don't think so. Shai doesn't like oil, so what if he's from Isreal? This would be like thinking all black people are ni**ers, I have black friends, good and bad in every race. Is he not entitled to express his mind, and make something good happen? Change is good, and I like his concept.... We'll see what happens
I am curious about the total energy of the infrastructure between oil and electric system. For Better Place system, how do they deal with the efficiency in the energy transportation? The combustion of oil in cars is higher energy efficient than the charge system.
Actually, it's really not. If I can remember the figures correctly, cars only utilize about 1/4 of the energy put into them. By comparison an electric motor is something like 90% efficient, and while the system as a whole has many more steps at which to lose energy it is still both more cost-efficient and energy-efficient than a system based on internal combustion engines...
Also, it allows you to power cars with renewable energy (wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, etc.) rather than oil...
And if you have a combination of renewable energy (biomass cannot work the way it is now) and electric cars, this combination will be a driving factor in the revolution to come. And yes, it will come.
To all those who gave this vid' a slating all I will say is that at least this company is trying. Their not bowing down to the big oil Co.s or Gov. pressure to keep the gas (petrol, diesel) powered vehicles on the road. Those Governments who have 'bailed-out' the auto-makers of these older vehicles (oil-based) should have instead invested those monies into R&D for plug-in E.Vs & 10 years or less from now we'll never understand how we managed before!!! Not utopian but plain old common sense!
I agree junittc7, even if this is geopolitical driven, the result still help the environment while forcing the oil rich countries to lose some of their power, and maybe start to become innovative for a change
okay so lets say this is entirely geopolitical and not about the environment.
would you be upset if saudi arabia and iran were forced to look internally for development rather than depend on their oil supplies to fund terrorism worldwide?
so maybe these people aren't only concerned with the environment. but it does help the world in more ways than one.
This is another idea planned by a guy who wants to CORNER the market for (EV) power. This is just like the oil companies taking over the trolleys in California decades ago to sell more OIL.
