I was in the queue for this 'concert' (more like an informal jam) - they were asking for trumpet/brass players to make up the numbers about 10 mins before downbeat so no surprising they sound a bit under-rehersed!!!!!!
PS Notice Wycliffe Gordon (solist here) and Zoltan Kiss (Mnozil Brass) in the trombone section.
I studied with Chris for 2 years in high school when he was in St. Louis. This band is clearly not very good and Chris' tone quality can't be appreciated when compressed like this on Youtube. We used to improvise in his living room....to hear him play was awesome. What is amazing about Chris is his range. He is not just a screamer, but played in the St. Louis Symphony while here in St. Louis. Great guy. He has lost tons of weight since I have seen him.
Ok, the trombone soloist can play obnoxious high notes...oh and can actually play a neat lick, but who is the asshole who gets on stage and bows to him? Tell me that's not a resident teacher. Totally embarrassing.
That was disgusting! Rehashing what was done, and what is outdated, and doing it poorly... the Maynard lookalike certainly doesn't soundalike...sure, high notes, who cares, no volume, no emotion.
That trombone player is Wyclef Gordon, he plays with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. There is a video of he and Wynton playing out their hotel window's to eachother, all improv. Its awesome. Its called "Wynton & Wycliffe: A Conversation"
I love Chris :) He's such agreat person! Every time he plays his personality comes out! Even though he's a beast at Trumpet...he's the most humble down to earth man I have ever met!
I just stumbled on this site. I went to college with Chris at ISU and played trumpet with him in the Big Red Marching Machine. For the record, he was NOT humble back then, but still a good guy. Where is he now? Is he teaching? Playing professionally? Just curious about what he is doing. His teacher was Herb Korselman (sp) while at ISU.
I believe that he is still playing on broadway and he has also made several CD's. I've met him a few times but don't know him well, but I am close with his parents.
Try a Professor at Julliard in the Jazz Studies dept. and playing or has played on numerous broadway shows and for the most famous musicians ever. He has a website out there. Basically he's the man in NYC.
Chris played the crap out of the Gypsy book and I've played in the section at Birdland once or twice with him and he's a monster. A fitting tribute to Maynard. BTW - Hi Mike! Ryan R
ohh, and he's humble. There is no theatrics. he plays his part, bows his head, turns to listens to the band and his appreciative of everybody around him. Every see Nick Marchione play. Never shuts up, always crackin' jokes, all about him. That's a guy who needs to humble up. I saw him one time a while back with the VJO and while Drewes was taking a solo, he turn his music with changes upside down, this to a man who is NYC trumpet playing. He needs to learn some repect. Earl Gardner 4LIFE
all right high note droolin' fools, you can talk trash about Jaudes, but go look at every version of Gonna Fly Now on You Tube and not even your god, Maynard Ferguson are all of his imitators from today does what Jaudes her at 2:35, take the part up to triple E. Show the man respect. If you don't think he can play, grab the Gypsy soundtrack he's on or check any Birdland big Band video on here. Jaudes toasts Marchione and even Nick would say that. Nick plays 3rd to Jaudes lead in that band.
Is that Walter White in the back? Why not have a Maynard alum do it? Sorry Jaudes doesn't make it here. And btw - he does the phil for more pops stuff, @ birdland I'd rather hear Nick Marchione and on Broadway Tony Kadleck is the man. Jaudes is 2nd rate and is an over playing pompous ass. Nice christian for ya!!!
Nice try, but Wycliffe stole the show. This should have been left to real maynard alumn to do it right. The trumpet solo is completely lame. Please check out the Maynard Tribute DVD or clip here on youtube. Those guys nail it right on. But again, nice try.
you are an asshole. Jaudes rocks this. he isn't the best improviser, but he does a great job with the part. This coming from a student of his for three years on Long Island, sucka.
During this concert they had the bad idea to ask to the trumpet players in the assistance to feel free to play the theme with the band and obviously...
Now imagine what that trombonest could do to women... -.-
