I have been reading from Andrew Loomis' book "Drawing The Head And Hands", and while I think his method for constructing the head is great, he seems to loose me when it comes to the 3/4 view. When you look at the drawing of the head, there is an oval-like shape within the sphere that represents the side plane of the skull and where the ear is supposed to go. Is it arbitrary decision? Or is there a method of measurement to determine the spacing of the oval-like shape and it's size?
i notice the biggest problem that i do as soon as the video started...drawing tooo fast when i'm not experienced at all. this is a seasoned VET! and he's taking his precious time. i need to sloooooooow down lol. time for practice!
Thank you for the real time demonstration! I wish I could have you as a teacher. I downloaded all of Loomis' books and am trying to self teach myself to get better, although I do find this way a bit tricky from how I had been doing it, which was really just a lazier version of the cross technique. My faces are coming out blockier, but I'll keep with it.
I bought Andrew Loomis book Drawing the head and Hands but I am finding it very difficult, even with his ball technique. No matter how i try to do it the head/face I draw never seems to look quite right.I was not an experienced portrait artist before so maybe I just need more practice.
Awesome video. Great to see someone who actually knows how to draw and doing it in real time. Thank you. Do you by any chance have open model drawing sessions at your school in Miami??
Thanks for your comments. We have open drawing and painting live model sessions all year round, Tuesdays & Thursdays 7- 9 pm and on Saturdays 9:30 am - 12:30 pm / 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Long poses. call 305-262-9966.
@Sukuraidogai i wouldn't say completely useless. i may not have learned how to be a picaso or van gough, but i did learn that i love it and how hard it is for some people
This is really great, thank you. I'd love to learn Loomis' method properly but I'm stuck with the most basic problem, how to properly divide the sphere and place the cross and side cuts when in a different position. I've looked for geometry tutorials but haven't found any about that. Could you please explain it or suggest somewhere I can learn that? I'd really appreciate it if you could.
@XofHope ONLY PRACTICE WILL HELP YOU!! DRAW FROM REAL PICTURES NOT FROM IMAGINATION . IT'S NOT MATHEMATICAL OR WHATSOEVER, IT'S ABOUT EDUCATING YOUR EYES: IF YOU CANT OBSERVE, YOU CANT DRAW!!! THE BASICS TO DRAW A HEAD IS:
1-DRAW AN EGG SHAPE REVERSE
2-DIVIDE HALF LENGTH (EYE LEVEL)
3-FROM THAT EYE LEVEL LINE TO CHIN, DIVIDE HALF : NOSE LEVEL
4-FROM NOSE TO CHIN, DIVIDE HALF: MOUTH OPENING LEVEL
WHEN YOU ROTATE THE HEAD, THE PERSPECTIVE LINES CHANGE SO USE MODEL TO DRAW DIFFERENT ANGLE
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SIDE CUTS, JUST DRAW LIGHTLY A BOX IN PERSPECTIVE, WITH THE NEARER LINE ( THE ONE THAT COMES FORWARD YOU) INDICATING THE FRONTIER BETWEEN PROFILE AND FULL FACE, ALBRECTH DURER USES THAT CONSTRUCTON METHOD FOR BUILDING HIS FIGURES!!! REMEMBER TO THINK 3D WHEN DRAWING, IT'S NOT A FLAT SHAPE YOU'RE BUILDING, YOU HAVE TO THINK " DEPTH" ON YOUR PAPER. KEEP PRACTICING AND YOU CAN START TO TRACE YOUR PICTURE WITH A LIGHT BOX, AND REWORK THEM!!!
but, Andrew Loomis taught to draw from the mind, not look at something. This guy is looking. Although, it's nice to see the step by step progression of Loomis.
A single video like this, in real time, is ten times more helpful than all the speedwork you find online. Thank you so much for sharing, and for choosing music that helps support the frame of mind involved.
@MrAlvinDraper Definitely agree. I never liked the speed drawing trend that's become popular lately. This vid is definitely one of the better ones on youtube, and Andrew Loomis is key learning for anyone wanting to improve their drawing/illustrating skills.
Tthe most importat thing i would like to undestand you dont show on your video. How to slice the other side of ball. Its hard to make it irght cause we cant see the invisible part of it . i've subscribed. thanks.nice work.
I tried this and it turned out looking like Dale Gribble... Idk if that's good or not...

@fabienmichael2 Loomis starts with a sphere, not an egg. Also, the half way cut of the sphere is the brow line not the eye line.

@misfitplanet btw, do draw something from the mind, you have to know how to draw it first.

Nice!
I just started out with Figure Drawing for all its worth.
Good to see that working slowely & concentrated provides
great results. I´m still a bit to frantic & that often ruins my
drawings.
Anyone who is interested in Loomis Books as PDF shoot me a message.

I agree with "peteyslatts", you are showing a enjoyable process (slow and nice music) not following a fast result

This is fantastic, but I would love it if there was some sort of commentary on the proportions of things; mainly for beginners such as myself.
Great job though!
