The entire album is a masterpiece. The musical talent displayed on this album from everybody who contributed is amazing. One of the best albums of all time.
Remember when this came out in 1982 - was a Sophomore in H.S. - should do this in concert since KISS loves pulling tricks out of the hat in concerts to please the fans
SALUDOS!
I am a firm believer that this is a good album, but not a good KISS album. This is definatly NOT what they needed to put out at the time. The only KISS album I have never heard anything of is Carnival of Souls. Each LP has its good & bad points. What KISS needed was Creatures of the Night after the disco/pop tinged Dynasty & Unmasked. Fans left in droves after those albums. If CotN had been released instead of any of the albums I mentioned I think KISS would have stayed big for a few more years
@Earnhardt12345 Actually he was... Destroyer, anyone? Ezrin had problems with drugs during the elder era, but he produced two great Kiss albums Destroyer and Revenge...
@Earnhardt12345 Have you ever listened to Destroyer? How about The Wall by Pink Floyd or School's Out by Alice Cooper? Seriously, get to know your music before bashing people's creative integrity.
@MegaZephead I meant the albums I mentioned in my previous comment where I said Bob Ezrin produced Destroyer, The Wall and School's Out because Earnhardt12345 said it was a good thing Ezrin wasn't around in the 70s.
this album has what? 2 good tunes?! after listening to dynasty, love gun?? c"mon this is not the real kiss! they were astrayed by ezrin! i tried to like this but no way!!!
This could of been a huge album if kiss didn't rush it and really got the concept of what they were producing. Ezrin really missed the pulse on this album, they should of used it for a movie sound track like Queen did with their album for the high lander movie. There are some awesome songs on this album....It's retarded how kiss attempted to market this album to their then pre school fan base like myself. I was 7 at the time and a massive kiss fan This could of been a Tubular Bells.
I remember finding this album as a 10 yr old at my local record store, and it seemed so weird - the only Kiss album to that point without their faces on the cover. The music was so different from anything else they had done. However, it sure does hold up. This album is 10 times better than Love Gun (utter schlock). BTW, the next time anyone tells you Kiss weren't good musicians, you tell them neither were the Stones or the Beatles.
Kiss are gods-put them in R&R HOF. 1st album I ever bought was Destroyer when I was 5. I remember shuffling thru the vinyl LPs & coming across that magnificent cover. I bought every album thru Asylum after that & became a musician because of Kiss. They've influenced EVERY rock musician from the early 70s on, period. Take a look at their catalog, it is massive. They had an ability unlike any other band to transform themselves. I'm speaking as a university-trained jazz drummer. Kiss are legends.
I love this album, Ive been a kiss fan prior and after this album, but it will always remind me of good times, times spent with my brother who i rarely see now, Is that such a bad thing to have music like this to bring back memories?
The Elder, was a good album. Kiss, sunk a lot of cash into it, and they had written good music. Kiss, had bit the bullet because, of the failure of its sales but, critics can say whatever they want. Crtics can, shove it up their asses.
If anyone likes "The Elder." That is cool. Nothing wrong with it. What I am annoyed with is being told I am not a "real" fan because I don't like the album. Sorry for those who feel that way.
The product Kiss is a novelty act with the music being sophomoric soundtrack to youthful angst. That product is what Kiss was first marketed as and gained them a legion of fans.
This is introspective art better left to bands like Yes , Rush and ELP
With introspective art comes a certain expectation of talent that was not present in the band at the time. Naturally this album would be doomed for that reason.
@mlmr11 Valid opinion, but a bit dismissive, don't you think? I'm a musician b/c of this band, & so are many of those you admire. I was also a huge Rush fan in HS; and, while Rush brings something to the table that Kiss never could, Kiss have an understanding of music that is lost on Rush, Yes, or any other comparable group. Give them respect for their songwriting ability. If you listen to their catalog, you will realize they always put the song first, an attribute the bands you mention do not.
This could of been a huge album if kiss didn't rush it and really got the concept of what they were producing. Ezrin really missed the pulse on this album, they should of used it for a movie sound track like Queen did with their album for the high lander. There are some awesome songs on this album. It's retarded how kiss attempted to market this album to their then pre school fan base like myself; I was 7 .This could of been a Tubular Bells for it's time, timeless!
I have been a KISS fan for 33 years and, my goodness, this is the worst album that KISS EVER made. Horrible. This song is terrible. KISS thought they were big and bad and could put out anything and the fans would buy it. Horrible.
I am not a real fan? God, I have heard that term "real fan" so many times , that if I had a dollar for the amount of times I heard it, I would be a millionaire. A "REAL" fan is a fan who is willing to criticize the band when he/she dislikes an album or whatever. Real fans can dislike an album and it is ok. What I am NOT is a "mark." A mark never criticizes anything the band does. A mark is a fan who doesn't like it when others criticize the band, even legitimately. I am a fan , not a mark
Yeah, this album was so fantastic that it BOMBED in sales. The record company ORDERED KISS to record actual ROCK songs for the "KILLERS" compilations. That is how "fantastic" it was.
@edgeacebeaglebrady you can't say this album is a shit because of the sales. many albums are great and they are not sold. of course it's not their best album, but it's great anyway.
@juampiiubi07 Hell, this album after all these years is a breath of fresh air that takes you into another world everytime you listen to it.As a kid HTH,Love Gun,and RRO was the way to go.Now it seems the last 5 years I have played this more than any other Kiss cd besides Creatures and Unmasked
wouldn't sound too bad as the soundtrack for the upcoming "vogage of the dawn treader". Purchased this album the day it came out, loved it then, love it now.
Brings to mind, enchanted forests, knights, dragons, and a boy who becomes an unlikely hero and goes on some kind of quest. If that's what the original screenplay was about, they nailed it with the music. Too bad they couldn't get the actors they wanted so it could have gone into studio. Would have been interesting to see a Lord of the Rings type film written by these guys. Everyone just try to remember before slamming them for it, it wasn't meant to be "KISS Music", it was the score for a movie
