  • I think I read that there are now only 6 people in the town.

  • Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot!

  • Why can't she talk normally?

  • they tried ta fill the mines with concrete fail! on big scale

  • I remember hearing about this yrs ago...ran across it today on utube..great

  • My grandparents lived here, and so did I for a brief period. Such a shame that residents were displaced from what I recall was a vibrant little town where everyone knew everyone.

  • Whats the cause of this burning? Is it perhaps a valcanic site just waiting to blow like yellow stone?

  • @thears2u It was a mine accident years back that set the coal seams

    on fire

  • @thears2u, coal accident.

  • @BrickerStudios Amazing it should burn for so many years. See any end in sight?

  • @thears2u, coal accident.

  • Lol yeah silent hill

  • I wanna go walk the abandoned streets how creepy no homes but just streets

  • OK, but do the few people left pay for their own heat? Why would anyone want to remain there? I would think it would become a perfect place for a nuclear plant and risk the already tarnished environment.

  • They still have electricity?

  • @Esorassen yes they still have power..there is about 7 house's left in centralia.,,and still have some street lights too ..i live a mile and a half from there and i actually hang out in a garage in centralia and drive threw there about 5/6 times a week

  • Centralia lost its Zip Code in 2002

  • @Weatherman97 What was centralia zip code ?

  • @AeroPolice 17921

  • i live 3 miles from here.

  • the population has decreased since this video has come out rofl

  • Wow, its a coal fire? There ain't that many mines till you get to Ashland, Shamokin area..... and people are hating on PA? Lived here all my life (Except I lived in OH for 2 years) And I love it. The coal mines aren't a problem, the states biggest issue is gas drilling in the northern tier. Thats ruining our states beauty, but I still love this state.

  • @outalinecowboy you do know that this is near Ashland.....

  • i would hate living in pa there coal mines everywhere! And theres a town in pa that nolonger exists thanks to this fire it was called Byrnesville the road leading to it is now closed

  • Forever alone

  • There's something like that in Leeds somewhere. I saw it a few years ago. I've got a video on an old mobile somewhere.

  • I drove by there a few days ago you can see steam coming out of the ground from the fire. its really cool.

  • A literal "Hell on Earth," huh?

  • I'm guessing no snow sticks to that ghost town

  • I don't think you want that deal, the state is forcing them out of their homes claiming it's unsafe even though they are away from the fires. They'd all prefer to pay taxes rather than leave.

  • I live in Pennsylvania and I remember skipping school to take road trips to Centralia to smoke blunts and check out the fires and shit... good memories.

  • @SHIPLEYC good idea, haha (:

  • OK, it's terrible what happened to this town and places like it all over the world (there are thousands, including "Burning Mountain" in Australia). But, if these fires are just allowed to burn, wouldn't it make sense to trap some of the heat and methane that are escaping? Couldn't they just set up a turbine nearby, run water pipes to trap the heat and tarp it to trap the methane? They could also offer cut-rate heat and AC to the surrounding towns.

  • a modern day Silent Hill

  • @poet2007 what do you mean "modern day"? this is what inspired the movie;)

  • @poet2007 This is the Town that inspired the Game and Movie !!

  • I thought the title meant something like "69 Sexy Street, Hawt, Pennsylvania"

    My bad...

  • I was there last week. I apparently discovered the entrance to Hell according to all of the graffitti there. I had to go to the bathroom alot so I pised in the steam vents to try and put out the fire. However, I failed miserably. BUT, at least I tried to put out the fire. haha

  • The Devil is coming to kill us. You see his fires form Hell arising...

  • @shenzielover , your joking right

  • yea really its silent hill xD

  • It looks like Gorgoroth from Lord of the Rings

  • Maybe i should move there

  • Welcome to Silent Hill

  • @smallbiggiejosh

    kudos

  • @smallbiggiejosh Silent Hill was actually based off of this town!

  • wow, centrollya? it's cenTRAILia. pronounciation. apparently not enough research was done on the place.

and yes, that house is gone now. thats PA for you. they cease whatever they want and you cant do shit about it. america is no longer free. jobs on the decline, if ur thinkin of movin to america, don't. the streets aren't ACTUALLY paved with gold. more like its made of the wrinkled mess of our trampled constitution

  • @mayonaiseanonymous She said it like that because she has an English accent.

  • @mayonaiseanonymous

you do know the lady is English right?

  • Who is this reporter on this video.. let me set a fire under ur house bitch, and see what u think about government manipulation!!!

  • "yeah we burn our fire right on top of coal veins.. no government conspiracy to make money or anything"

  • Some of you people are so sick from the soul.. i live 15 min from here and visit it often... the governemt has been trying to evict them, or buy them out ofr years now, for the minerals underneath the town.. the few residents that remain are the type of residents we need to fight for our freedom

  • some one should put that shyt out lol

  • actually, there is a red siren near the church.

  • Wow, hell is in PA

  • @jd18504 so is intercourse

  • @jd18504 No...this is just a fire...i think you're thinking of Jersey

  • The state seized that man's house last year and tore it down, I live 60 miles away and saw on the news..

  • SIIIILLLLENTT HILLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!

    WERE GONNA DIEEEEEE!!!!!!

XD i loves silent hill though......im gonna go there and im gonna have me flashlight and shotgun with me.....just in case i seez me some scarlets or pyramid heads >_> <_<

  • i went there and walked around the place. It's pretty freaky seeing no sign of life. We took pictures of us in the smoking holes it was awesome except for the soles of our shoes getting stuck to the road lol

  • who the fuck eats chimpmonks??

  • @indyboom I do.What do you eat?

  • @70goldtop Hi.. Im not too sure, but I can tell you what your mom likes for breakfast

  • coal burning (electric companies) IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF MERCURY POLUTION..but don't take my word for it........LOOK IT UP.....have a nice day

  • @s4a4v4y mercury? they are burning coal not thermometers.

  • im the one who started the fire cause i owned that townand i didnt want that town anymore

  • somebody call 911 cause shawty's fire burning on the dance floor ououeee

  • SOUNDS LIKE MY KINDA TOWN

  • I think this house is gone now. I'm going to Centralia at the end of the month. I wish I knew about this place 10 years ago.

  • so is this the only part of pa that doesnt get snow in the winter??? cuz if it hits the ground it will instantly melt.

  • oh God, i've always thought there was sth weird about some parts of PA.

aand, i'd never live in a town like this! creepy

  • @Beaglesyd are a Pittsburgh Steelers fan

  • @Beaglesyd Philadelphia

  • @Beaglesyd me to

  • Interesting story, let down by idiotic comment.

  • Its like silent hill

  • @metalmouthman5083 Yeah this is actually the town that the movie was based off of, not sure about the games though.

  • @metalmouthman5083 It's not "like" Silent Hill. Centralia, Pennsylvania is one of the towns that the makers of the movie "Silent Hill" used as a basis for the town in the movie. So technically, you could say that Centralia -is- Silent Hill.

  • @Amarinthstargazer actully silent hill is based off a town in asia called silent hill

  • @slipknotfanalex21 In the game, yes. But the American movie based on the game is based off of Centralia. This is fact.

  • @Amarinthstargazer o ya i no that. srry i fluked

  • This place is actually pretty awesome to visit. Truly the fires of hell seem to burn beneath your feat in some areas. The entire silent hill series is in part based on the real life Centralia Pennsylvania.

  • B.P. GULF SPILL.....It`s about time we get some answers, how about if it NEVER gets plugged, how long do we have, till all sea is covered? Check out youtube`s " DARVAZ BURNING HOLE " A coal mine in Turkmenistan, suddenly it started spewing gas, so the workers had to flee for their lives. The company decided to fire it up so the gas would burn away, and they could get on with their coal business. This happened in 1970, and THE FIRE STILL RAGES ON UNSTOPPABLE 40 YEARS LATER !!!!!!

  • I Like To Go Up There....

  • @hayes4298 really what part of johnstown ?? and im from richland

  • So...if the townsfolk (God I love writing that word!) were evicted through emminent domain (or however in the Hell you spell it) why were people allowed to remain? Why do these people still have utilities? And where do they get their mail? The zip code for the town was yanked in 2002. Oh and by the way...nice bit of reporting by Bridget Jones...

  • I so recall watching this devastation as I frequently had to travel thru Centralia over the years when I lived in Pa. and was selling commercial real estate all over eastern & central Pa.

  • The coal you use to heat the house ins't mixed with many other toxins that are found around the area. The government has a right to evict someone out of their house IF the conditions are unsafe to reside. If the Government was willing to relocate residence then by all means, they should have taken the offer. I am currently in Environmental studies in college and I can tell you this, it is NOT recommended to stay .

  • This reminds me of chernobyl, nearly completely deserted. :l

  • Silent hill is based on this town

  • @SoulKiIIer i wanted to say it before i saw this comment here!!!

  • @SoulKiIIer silent hill was filmed in the town... not based on it?

  • wow i would love to live there i can't believe that they are tearing down the houses as the residents leave that really sucks. i hope Centralia doesn't disappear because of the stupid government. i live in PA i wouldn't want to see that town vanish because of a underground fire! someone needs to really do something about this!

  • @lilpunc414

I completely agree. Unfortunately, in Feb. 2010, the State got sick of worrying about the last people living there and forced them to pack up leave. I plan to go back to Centralia in the summer to map out the fire: where it has been, where it is now and where it is going to be. Maybe it will help someone...

I bet when I return there won't be anything left of the town...Very sad...

  • @XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX omg you have NO idea what you are talking about, people still live there, and there "isnt going to be anything left" is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.. it's not wasting away!! Wow, if you aren't even from around centralia or any other part of pa, shut up!

  • @adiogurl405 I'll have you know that I DO live in PA, and if you don't believe what I said about the article, look it up for yourself. And I DO know that people still live there, why else would there still be houses there? But what I said is true: the State is trying to relocate the last residents because their plan is to dig up the mine. Look it up.

  • @XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX Its not that i dont believe you, but things are constantly being said in the world, and it never actaully happens... I highly doubt they are ever going to do anything about the fire, let alone kick people out of their houses.

  • @adiogurl405 They can try if they like, but their latest proposal sounds like more money than they want to shell out. So, you are probably right, it may not happen at all. After all, they indeed could have put the fire out many years earlier than this, but they ere perhaps a bit overly concerned with their budgets...

  • @XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX I saw this on the news a few years ago.I think a few people were still living there and one man was interviewed and he refused to leave.I guess people move to a town nearby.

  • what the reporter did not tell you is the 10 people who still reside in centralia are living there rent and property tax free. the state of pa claimed centralia under eminent domain back in 92'. i need to get a deal like that without all the sulfur smell and smoke.

  • @mac609 I want to move there....

  • @mac609

You no doubt are a damn fool. Nobody wants to leave their house/home in which they lived for years and knew most of the pople in rown. I know as I'm a coal cracker at heart and worked in the mines digging coal. Not a nice easy job dodo. Pure and simply what passes for government just don't give a rats ass for it's citizens.

    .,

  • they teard down johns house so theres only like 5 people there now

  • What about Silent Hill? The games weren't based on Centralia and the movie just based its location design off of this convenient circumstance. It is distressing that this bed of coal will continue to burn like that but no, towns die and are abandoned all the time. Maybe the last residents should be given state assistance in relocating but staying there? Nah, makes me think of those idiots who stay home in major storms. The town is only a memory now.

  • Please help save the people of centralia from eviction. The state is trying to evict the 5 remaining residents. Please email the governor. Google the gov. of Pa. get his webpage and post a simple comment to stop the evictions. These folks are safe in their homes, look how long they have been there and they are OK. I have been to Centralia, it is green and beautiful. the fire only burns on the hill outside of town. Please help Centraliaheart

  • @Centraliaheart

It is beautiful. I was also there, and I plan to return to Centralia in the summer to map out the fire: where it has been, where it is now and where it is going to be. Maybe it will help someone. If I can be of assistance in any way?

  • 350 ACRES.

    :|

    Holy shit.

  • Wow I'd love to live there, but then again I wouldn't wanna burn if the fire consumed my home. lol

  • When was this video made? Does John Kominski need a boyfriend?

  • I wonder if a study of the local wildlife(remaining?) has been done. Everything from earthworms, beetles to small mammals & birds. Adaptation to poisons and gasses etc.

  • I hope Shamokin is next :)

  • y'know some of silent hill was actaully based of centralia. i live near it (philedelphia) ima check it out

  • I was there in the early 80's and it really was a ghost town. I actually felt bad for the home owners because I don't know if homeowners' insurance even covered them. I doubt it.

  • hell maybe??

  • it is actually 14 people, i live here

  • Do you still live in Centralia? I was there last week and put my artwork on telephone poles, red hearts with a message of love from my hometown. Also put a large plywood heart on a vacant lot that looked like a house had been recently torn dow. Is my art still there? I will return in the spring with another beautification project. Centraliaheart

  • I am sorry for my misclarification. I actually live a few towns over, but am very invlolved in the town. I do believe it is still there, though I will check. Knowing the people, none are vandals and it should stay there.

  • Thank you for responding. I hope to return to Centralia in the spring with another project. I feel that the government failed the people of Centralia in a big way by simply moving everyone instead of solving the problem. I love Centralia even though I live in another state. I would love to see the town rebuilt and people be allowed to return there. The strreets signs are gone and it seems that they want to simply remove the town. It should not happen. Centraliaheart

  • it doesnt quite seem like it is going to completely disappear cuz with the game silent hill out more and more fans of the series might want to visit it i wish i could go and see it, but yeah i think it ll still exist

  • Hi. Iwant Centralia to live in the hearts of everyone. I found the town beautiful and peaceful. there are only 6 houses left, an auto detailing building and the municiple building. Most of the street signs are gone. I needed a better street map when I was there. As the residents leave or die, the government tears down their houses. There is only one road sign saying Centralia. That is why i fear the town could vanish. I hope not. I did see the movie Silent Hill. Centraliaheart

  • Hi danemaricich13, I was concerned that the wind might tear the hearts from the poles. If you go, there is a message on the back of each heart, too. What happened to John Lokitis, Jr. I heard that he moved away, do you know what happened? I have been unable to get in touch with him. We wanted to offer him a day of our help as volunteers while we were there, but I was unable to reach him. Do you think that the people of Centrallia would move back if they could?Centraliaheart

  • Is there not danger in living there? What about what you a breathing in? Do you worry for your health. Are there any kids there?

  • @memacnoca I heat my house with a coal stove, I figure, whatever i breathe in Centralia is what i am breathing at home. Centraliaheart

  • yes ther are kids liveing ther

  • No you dont! Prove it by posting a video of you walking in centralia saying " hi hm123productions this is danemaricich13 then i will believe you!

  • I don't need to prove anything to you.

  • TONS AND TONS OF TURKEY

But if it hot.... than that makes automatic turkey food?

  • You're missing the whole point. This is OUR local history. Something we've seen happening for many years and a lot of people have been effected by it. No one really gives two shits if you live in Chicago, nor do we care to hear you pointless opinions. Next time you have an opinion on something, make sure it fits the topic or at least makes sense douche bag.

  • Thanks for proving my point. No one fucking where I live and no one cares where you live. It is your history so you have to give your fucking address? Tell me, why haven't you responded to bobbisman2008?

Get bent and realize no one on the fucking internet gives a shit where you live, and if they do - they are probably the type of person you don't want to have it.

    Fuck you HerrKitzler.

  • I was in Centralia last week. I decorated the town with hearts and messages of love from my hometown. Yes, there is a mine fire on the hill, but I found Centralia to be beautiful, green and peaceful. I do not want Centralia to disappear from the face of the earth. Centraliaheart

  • Wow you live in an even bigger shit hole than Centrailia congrats Fuckface

  • What I don't understand is who provides the electricity and running water to this town when it's supposed to be abandoned. I would imagine not electricity company or water company actually provides these utilities, so the few residents have to use generators and wells?

  • I wonder if there are sirens on the church and a creepy little girl, plus i also wonder if zombies come out of the ground.

  • I was there last week. It was a beautiful, peaceful place. Yes, there is a mine fire, but it seems to be in one place. I think Centralia should be repopulated, the folks allowed to return and rebuild their town. The government failed the people of Centralia like they failed the people of New Orleans. Centraliaheart

  • @R1DDL3RS if you stand in the middle of it too long a big fucker with a damn "cloud buster blade" comes out of nowhere and say "BITCH I COME TO RAPE YO ASS!!!" I know from experience...

  • @R1DDL3RS LOL dont forget piramid head hunting people down XD

  • @R1DDL3RS i hope

  • it's on my way to work....

  • I live pretty close to Centralia and I was there today. It's sad, but really neat.

  • i use tp live in Mount carmel Pa

  • Such a sad, yet interesting story. I have been there myself about 9 years ago, and would like to go back and see the difference now. I am interested in the ppl that still live there, and how long they plan to stay. I'm assuming as long as they can. What I wonder is if the fire keeps burning will the nearby towns like Ashland and Mount Carmel be affected as well?

  • When I was a kid I used to go right through this place on my way to New Media to go drag racing.

  • bad ass :)

  • i used to live near it

  • wow... i cant say anything but wow...

if there used to be any stores or anything there, 1 person would run like 3 stores at a time lol

  • To rockkkkher:

Actually, I suspect the danger of falling into a burning coal fire below, is far less than the danger of Congress raising our taxes YET AGAIN!

So let people live where they want.

If they choose not to leave, it may because people exagerate the dangers?

  • its not really that bad here. the guy in the vid is my uncle. and as he said the hunting here is great haha. and you dont have to worrie about ppl getting in your hair

  • The only "CRAZY" people are the ones who drive from NYC,New Jersey and Philly to look at it

  • I'm from Illinois and I want to go there. I want to ask everyone why they would want to stay and what it's like to live there.

  • Honestly, there isnt much there to see except holes in the ground, and a few chimneys with smoke coming out. Once you approach a hole in the ground, you'll second guess what your getting near. I dont recommend walking up to one of the holes in the ground.

  • @70goldtop oh, didn't knew you're one of them..

  • @Seththrone What does "Didn't knew you were one of them" mean?

  • @70goldtop you're right. Let's all stay home, eat pork and watch American Idol.

  • @ericbombardier Stay home and eat pork are good ideas. You should try them.As far as American Idol you're on your own

  • @70goldtop im from cleveland and im bout to take a drive over there :P its very interesting

  • @70goldtop Its not crazy that people wanna visit this place... I find this place to be fascinating.

  • @70goldtop psssh in that case i'm insane cause i want to drive there from florida

  • @AshKetchumRawkz Must be.Stay put.Floridas hot enough

  • @70goldtop kyu i wan to go though for the opening of the time capsule

  • This is a truly interesting place. I took a drive there yesterday and its sad that so little is left of it compared to what it could have been today if not for the underground fire. I believe now there is 6 people still living there. Including the mayor who has held his office since 1993. when the final Centralian passes the government will be able to step in and conduct a true cleanup of the lands affected.

  • the house at 1:02 looks like the house in the Silent hill game (the first one)

    kreeeepy

I'm so going there one day

  • I wonder if the people who live there are crazy lol

  • lol no, they're not, I know it for sure

  • I visited the town, once. It's only about 1hr drive from Allentown. The pop is 10 because those few people refuse to move out & the gov't won't forcibly remove them. They actually bypassed the highway thru town, the road is still there, you can walk on it, people have aptly named it "the highway to hell" (smoke rises from cracks in the road). If U visit centralia be sure to visit the cemetery just as the sun goes down. The smoke from the fire & the general neglect make for eerie times :)

  • i'm in southeastern pa. and never heard of this.wow!

  • i live 2 miles from Centralia

  • I feel drawn here for some reason

  • Me too

I bet i''d be cheap to buy land there

  • Heh, I'm a follower of the whole Centralia story, especially since my mom was born in the not 4 miles away town of Mt. Carmel. She used to bike ride into the town as a kid; always had nice things to say. I have a video me driving into the town from Ashland, PA. Also, at 1:50, the house and unnamed fella there is John Lokitis, who speaks profusely about the town in the documentary "The Town that Was"... if anyone cares. :) He's the most outspoken "hero" for the dying town.

  • 10 people in a town please what more could you ask for? Well mabey at least a bar!:} I'm from pa I always reasearch this town very interesting. I'm sure out of ten families are their kids? where do they go to school and shop?

  • i dont know about kids, but any kids in centralia would go to mt. carmel school district. centralia is an interesting place to visit. well, now if they can revive the coal region and revive the populations there would be more interest in visiting that area of the state.

  • why would they look like hills have eyes people i live a mile away from the fire and around here where you grow up you love and they are true to where they live they love the town and want to keep it alive out of the hundreds of houses that people sold to the goverment they stayed thats great the goverment bought everyone a brand new home but they didnt want it thats great

  • Those people look so normal...I half expected them to look like folks from The Hills Have Eyes or something....I imagined them to be these old senile people. I wonder if they're in a cult...cus...why would anyone live in a place like that?

  • Like smokine said... this town was just a normal town until the 1960s. My mom used to bike through it as a kid and always complemented the folks as very kindly people who would sit on their porches and leave their doors unlocked at night. The coal fire is a sad story; look up Offroaders Centralia for a detailed site about the then and now.

  • I don't know, maybe it's cus I grew up in Hong Kong and Chicago which are both metropolises. I can't imagine living anywhere where there's not at least a few thousand people around me at any given time and the vibrancy of city life. It's very strange to me. But I'm getting a sense of why they'd want to live there. I sometimes want to escape to places with less people too.
