My grandparents lived here, and so did I for a brief period. Such a shame that residents were displaced from what I recall was a vibrant little town where everyone knew everyone.
OK, but do the few people left pay for their own heat? Why would anyone want to remain there? I would think it would become a perfect place for a nuclear plant and risk the already tarnished environment.
@Esorassen yes they still have power..there is about 7 house's left in centralia.,,and still have some street lights too ..i live a mile and a half from there and i actually hang out in a garage in centralia and drive threw there about 5/6 times a week
Wow, its a coal fire? There ain't that many mines till you get to Ashland, Shamokin area..... and people are hating on PA? Lived here all my life (Except I lived in OH for 2 years) And I love it. The coal mines aren't a problem, the states biggest issue is gas drilling in the northern tier. Thats ruining our states beauty, but I still love this state.
i would hate living in pa there coal mines everywhere! And theres a town in pa that nolonger exists thanks to this fire it was called Byrnesville the road leading to it is now closed
I don't think you want that deal, the state is forcing them out of their homes claiming it's unsafe even though they are away from the fires. They'd all prefer to pay taxes rather than leave.
I live in Pennsylvania and I remember skipping school to take road trips to Centralia to smoke blunts and check out the fires and shit... good memories.
OK, it's terrible what happened to this town and places like it all over the world (there are thousands, including "Burning Mountain" in Australia). But, if these fires are just allowed to burn, wouldn't it make sense to trap some of the heat and methane that are escaping? Couldn't they just set up a turbine nearby, run water pipes to trap the heat and tarp it to trap the methane? They could also offer cut-rate heat and AC to the surrounding towns.
I was there last week. I apparently discovered the entrance to Hell according to all of the graffitti there. I had to go to the bathroom alot so I pised in the steam vents to try and put out the fire. However, I failed miserably. BUT, at least I tried to put out the fire. haha
wow, centrollya? it's cenTRAILia. pronounciation. apparently not enough research was done on the place.
and yes, that house is gone now. thats PA for you. they cease whatever they want and you cant do shit about it. america is no longer free. jobs on the decline, if ur thinkin of movin to america, don't. the streets aren't ACTUALLY paved with gold. more like its made of the wrinkled mess of our trampled constitution
Some of you people are so sick from the soul.. i live 15 min from here and visit it often... the governemt has been trying to evict them, or buy them out ofr years now, for the minerals underneath the town.. the few residents that remain are the type of residents we need to fight for our freedom

B.P. GULF SPILL.....It`s about time we get some answers, how about if it NEVER gets plugged, how long do we have, till all sea is covered? Check out youtube`s " DARVAZ BURNING HOLE " A coal mine in Turkmenistan, suddenly it started spewing gas, so the workers had to flee for their lives. The company decided to fire it up so the gas would burn away, and they could get on with their coal business. This happened in 1970, and THE FIRE STILL RAGES ON UNSTOPPABLE 40 YEARS LATER !!!!!!
So...if the townsfolk (God I love writing that word!) were evicted through emminent domain (or however in the Hell you spell it) why were people allowed to remain? Why do these people still have utilities? And where do they get their mail? The zip code for the town was yanked in 2002. Oh and by the way...nice bit of reporting by Bridget Jones...

wow i would love to live there i can't believe that they are tearing down the houses as the residents leave that really sucks. i hope Centralia doesn't disappear because of the stupid government. i live in PA i wouldn't want to see that town vanish because of a underground fire! someone needs to really do something about this!
I completely agree. Unfortunately, in Feb. 2010, the State got sick of worrying about the last people living there and forced them to pack up leave. I plan to go back to Centralia in the summer to map out the fire: where it has been, where it is now and where it is going to be. Maybe it will help someone...
I bet when I return there won't be anything left of the town...Very sad...
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX omg you have NO idea what you are talking about, people still live there, and there "isnt going to be anything left" is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.. it's not wasting away!! Wow, if you aren't even from around centralia or any other part of pa, shut up!
@adiogurl405 I'll have you know that I DO live in PA, and if you don't believe what I said about the article, look it up for yourself. And I DO know that people still live there, why else would there still be houses there? But what I said is true: the State is trying to relocate the last residents because their plan is to dig up the mine. Look it up.
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX Its not that i dont believe you, but things are constantly being said in the world, and it never actaully happens... I highly doubt they are ever going to do anything about the fire, let alone kick people out of their houses.
@adiogurl405 They can try if they like, but their latest proposal sounds like more money than they want to shell out. So, you are probably right, it may not happen at all. After all, they indeed could have put the fire out many years earlier than this, but they ere perhaps a bit overly concerned with their budgets...
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX I saw this on the news a few years ago.I think a few people were still living there and one man was interviewed and he refused to leave.I guess people move to a town nearby.
what the reporter did not tell you is the 10 people who still reside in centralia are living there rent and property tax free. the state of pa claimed centralia under eminent domain back in 92'. i need to get a deal like that without all the sulfur smell and smoke.
You no doubt are a damn fool. Nobody wants to leave their house/home in which they lived for years and knew most of the pople in rown. I know as I'm a coal cracker at heart and worked in the mines digging coal. Not a nice easy job dodo. Pure and simply what passes for government just don't give a rats ass for it's citizens.
What about Silent Hill? The games weren't based on Centralia and the movie just based its location design off of this convenient circumstance. It is distressing that this bed of coal will continue to burn like that but no, towns die and are abandoned all the time. Maybe the last residents should be given state assistance in relocating but staying there? Nah, makes me think of those idiots who stay home in major storms. The town is only a memory now.
Please help save the people of centralia from eviction. The state is trying to evict the 5 remaining residents. Please email the governor. Google the gov. of Pa. get his webpage and post a simple comment to stop the evictions. These folks are safe in their homes, look how long they have been there and they are OK. I have been to Centralia, it is green and beautiful. the fire only burns on the hill outside of town. Please help Centraliaheart
It is beautiful. I was also there, and I plan to return to Centralia in the summer to map out the fire: where it has been, where it is now and where it is going to be. Maybe it will help someone. If I can be of assistance in any way?
I wonder if a study of the local wildlife(remaining?) has been done. Everything from earthworms, beetles to small mammals & birds. Adaptation to poisons and gasses etc.
I was there in the early 80's and it really was a ghost town. I actually felt bad for the home owners because I don't know if homeowners' insurance even covered them. I doubt it.
Do you still live in Centralia? I was there last week and put my artwork on telephone poles, red hearts with a message of love from my hometown. Also put a large plywood heart on a vacant lot that looked like a house had been recently torn dow. Is my art still there? I will return in the spring with another beautification project. Centraliaheart
I am sorry for my misclarification. I actually live a few towns over, but am very invlolved in the town. I do believe it is still there, though I will check. Knowing the people, none are vandals and it should stay there.
Thank you for responding. I hope to return to Centralia in the spring with another project. I feel that the government failed the people of Centralia in a big way by simply moving everyone instead of solving the problem. I love Centralia even though I live in another state. I would love to see the town rebuilt and people be allowed to return there. The strreets signs are gone and it seems that they want to simply remove the town. It should not happen. Centraliaheart
it doesnt quite seem like it is going to completely disappear cuz with the game silent hill out more and more fans of the series might want to visit it i wish i could go and see it, but yeah i think it ll still exist
Hi. Iwant Centralia to live in the hearts of everyone. I found the town beautiful and peaceful. there are only 6 houses left, an auto detailing building and the municiple building. Most of the street signs are gone. I needed a better street map when I was there. As the residents leave or die, the government tears down their houses. There is only one road sign saying Centralia. That is why i fear the town could vanish. I hope not. I did see the movie Silent Hill. Centraliaheart
Hi danemaricich13, I was concerned that the wind might tear the hearts from the poles. If you go, there is a message on the back of each heart, too. What happened to John Lokitis, Jr. I heard that he moved away, do you know what happened? I have been unable to get in touch with him. We wanted to offer him a day of our help as volunteers while we were there, but I was unable to reach him. Do you think that the people of Centrallia would move back if they could?Centraliaheart
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why are people leaving messages like "I used to live near it" or "I drive past it on my way to work" or "I used to lived in mount carmel?" Who fucking cares?
I live in chicago and don't need a car. Relevant? No. But it is true. So I'll leave it as a comment.
You're missing the whole point. This is OUR local history. Something we've seen happening for many years and a lot of people have been effected by it. No one really gives two shits if you live in Chicago, nor do we care to hear you pointless opinions. Next time you have an opinion on something, make sure it fits the topic or at least makes sense douche bag.
Thanks for proving my point. No one fucking where I live and no one cares where you live. It is your history so you have to give your fucking address? Tell me, why haven't you responded to bobbisman2008?
Get bent and realize no one on the fucking internet gives a shit where you live, and if they do - they are probably the type of person you don't want to have it.
I was in Centralia last week. I decorated the town with hearts and messages of love from my hometown. Yes, there is a mine fire on the hill, but I found Centralia to be beautiful, green and peaceful. I do not want Centralia to disappear from the face of the earth. Centraliaheart
What I don't understand is who provides the electricity and running water to this town when it's supposed to be abandoned. I would imagine not electricity company or water company actually provides these utilities, so the few residents have to use generators and wells?
I was there last week. It was a beautiful, peaceful place. Yes, there is a mine fire, but it seems to be in one place. I think Centralia should be repopulated, the folks allowed to return and rebuild their town. The government failed the people of Centralia like they failed the people of New Orleans. Centraliaheart
@R1DDL3RS if you stand in the middle of it too long a big fucker with a damn "cloud buster blade" comes out of nowhere and say "BITCH I COME TO RAPE YO ASS!!!" I know from experience...
Such a sad, yet interesting story. I have been there myself about 9 years ago, and would like to go back and see the difference now. I am interested in the ppl that still live there, and how long they plan to stay. I'm assuming as long as they can. What I wonder is if the fire keeps burning will the nearby towns like Ashland and Mount Carmel be affected as well?
its not really that bad here. the guy in the vid is my uncle. and as he said the hunting here is great haha. and you dont have to worrie about ppl getting in your hair
Honestly, there isnt much there to see except holes in the ground, and a few chimneys with smoke coming out. Once you approach a hole in the ground, you'll second guess what your getting near. I dont recommend walking up to one of the holes in the ground.
This is a truly interesting place. I took a drive there yesterday and its sad that so little is left of it compared to what it could have been today if not for the underground fire. I believe now there is 6 people still living there. Including the mayor who has held his office since 1993. when the final Centralian passes the government will be able to step in and conduct a true cleanup of the lands affected.
I visited the town, once. It's only about 1hr drive from Allentown. The pop is 10 because those few people refuse to move out & the gov't won't forcibly remove them. They actually bypassed the highway thru town, the road is still there, you can walk on it, people have aptly named it "the highway to hell" (smoke rises from cracks in the road). If U visit centralia be sure to visit the cemetery just as the sun goes down. The smoke from the fire & the general neglect make for eerie times :)
Heh, I'm a follower of the whole Centralia story, especially since my mom was born in the not 4 miles away town of Mt. Carmel. She used to bike ride into the town as a kid; always had nice things to say. I have a video me driving into the town from Ashland, PA. Also, at 1:50, the house and unnamed fella there is John Lokitis, who speaks profusely about the town in the documentary "The Town that Was"... if anyone cares. :) He's the most outspoken "hero" for the dying town.
10 people in a town please what more could you ask for? Well mabey at least a bar!:} I'm from pa I always reasearch this town very interesting. I'm sure out of ten families are their kids? where do they go to school and shop?
i dont know about kids, but any kids in centralia would go to mt. carmel school district. centralia is an interesting place to visit. well, now if they can revive the coal region and revive the populations there would be more interest in visiting that area of the state.
why would they look like hills have eyes people i live a mile away from the fire and around here where you grow up you love and they are true to where they live they love the town and want to keep it alive out of the hundreds of houses that people sold to the goverment they stayed thats great the goverment bought everyone a brand new home but they didnt want it thats great
Those people look so normal...I half expected them to look like folks from The Hills Have Eyes or something....I imagined them to be these old senile people. I wonder if they're in a cult...cus...why would anyone live in a place like that?
Like smokine said... this town was just a normal town until the 1960s. My mom used to bike through it as a kid and always complemented the folks as very kindly people who would sit on their porches and leave their doors unlocked at night. The coal fire is a sad story; look up Offroaders Centralia for a detailed site about the then and now.
I don't know, maybe it's cus I grew up in Hong Kong and Chicago which are both metropolises. I can't imagine living anywhere where there's not at least a few thousand people around me at any given time and the vibrancy of city life. It's very strange to me. But I'm getting a sense of why they'd want to live there. I sometimes want to escape to places with less people too.

@lilpunc414
XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX 1 year ago
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX omg you have NO idea what you are talking about, people still live there, and there "isnt going to be anything left" is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.. it's not wasting away!! Wow, if you aren't even from around centralia or any other part of pa, shut up!
adiogurl405 1 year ago
@adiogurl405 I'll have you know that I DO live in PA, and if you don't believe what I said about the article, look it up for yourself. And I DO know that people still live there, why else would there still be houses there? But what I said is true: the State is trying to relocate the last residents because their plan is to dig up the mine. Look it up.
XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX 1 year ago
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX Its not that i dont believe you, but things are constantly being said in the world, and it never actaully happens... I highly doubt they are ever going to do anything about the fire, let alone kick people out of their houses.
adiogurl405 1 year ago
@adiogurl405 They can try if they like, but their latest proposal sounds like more money than they want to shell out. So, you are probably right, it may not happen at all. After all, they indeed could have put the fire out many years earlier than this, but they ere perhaps a bit overly concerned with their budgets...
XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX 1 year ago
@XxScreamXFlyXDreamxX I saw this on the news a few years ago.I think a few people were still living there and one man was interviewed and he refused to leave.I guess people move to a town nearby.
HattieLovesCattie 1 year ago
what the reporter did not tell you is the 10 people who still reside in centralia are living there rent and property tax free. the state of pa claimed centralia under eminent domain back in 92'. i need to get a deal like that without all the sulfur smell and smoke.

You no doubt are a damn fool. Nobody wants to leave their house/home in which they lived for years and knew most of the pople in rown. I know as I'm a coal cracker at heart and worked in the mines digging coal. Not a nice easy job dodo. Pure and simply what passes for government just don't give a rats ass for it's citizens.

they teard down johns house so theres only like 5 people there now
TheCamraman253 1 year ago
What about Silent Hill? The games weren't based on Centralia and the movie just based its location design off of this convenient circumstance. It is distressing that this bed of coal will continue to burn like that but no, towns die and are abandoned all the time. Maybe the last residents should be given state assistance in relocating but staying there? Nah, makes me think of those idiots who stay home in major storms. The town is only a memory now.
nokomarie1963 1 year ago
Please help save the people of centralia from eviction. The state is trying to evict the 5 remaining residents. Please email the governor. Google the gov. of Pa. get his webpage and post a simple comment to stop the evictions. These folks are safe in their homes, look how long they have been there and they are OK. I have been to Centralia, it is green and beautiful. the fire only burns on the hill outside of town. Please help Centraliaheart

Centraliaheart 2 years ago
I am sorry for my misclarification. I actually live a few towns over, but am very invlolved in the town. I do believe it is still there, though I will check. Knowing the people, none are vandals and it should stay there.
danemaricich13 2 years ago

Centraliaheart 2 years ago
Hi danemaricich13, I was concerned that the wind might tear the hearts from the poles. If you go, there is a message on the back of each heart, too. What happened to John Lokitis, Jr. I heard that he moved away, do you know what happened? I have been unable to get in touch with him. We wanted to offer him a day of our help as volunteers while we were there, but I was unable to reach him. Do you think that the people of Centrallia would move back if they could?Centraliaheart

Why are people leaving messages like "I used to live near it" or "I drive past it on my way to work" or "I used to lived in mount carmel?" Who fucking cares?
I live in chicago and don't need a car. Relevant? No. But it is true. So I'll leave it as a comment.
jophus82 2 years ago
You're missing the whole point. This is OUR local history. Something we've seen happening for many years and a lot of people have been effected by it. No one really gives two shits if you live in Chicago, nor do we care to hear you pointless opinions. Next time you have an opinion on something, make sure it fits the topic or at least makes sense douche bag.

Thanks for proving my point. No one fucking where I live and no one cares where you live. It is your history so you have to give your fucking address? Tell me, why haven't you responded to bobbisman2008?

What I don't understand is who provides the electricity and running water to this town when it's supposed to be abandoned. I would imagine not electricity company or water company actually provides these utilities, so the few residents have to use generators and wells?

I was there last week. It was a beautiful, peaceful place. Yes, there is a mine fire, but it seems to be in one place.

Actually, I suspect the danger of falling into a burning coal fire below, is far less than the danger of Congress raising our taxes YET AGAIN!
So let people live where they want.
If they choose not to leave, it may because people exagerate the dangers?

:) He's the most outspoken "hero" for the dying town.
sonicepochguy 3 years ago
10 people in a town please what more could you ask for? Well mabey at least a bar!:} I'm from pa I always reasearch this town very interesting. I'm sure out of ten families are their kids? where do they go to school and shop?
smdaquiri 3 years ago
i dont know about kids, but any kids in centralia would go to mt. carmel school district. centralia is an interesting place to visit. well, now if they can revive the coal region and revive the populations there would be more interest in visiting that area of the state.

why would they look like hills have eyes people i live a mile away from the fire and around here where you grow up you love and they are true to where they live they love the town and want to keep it alive out of the hundreds of houses that people sold to the goverment they stayed thats great the goverment bought everyone a brand new home but they didnt want it thats great

Those people look so normal...I half expected them to look like folks from The Hills Have Eyes or something....I imagined them to be these old senile people. I wonder if they're in a cult...cus...why would anyone live in a place like that?
gariadara 3 years ago
Like smokine said... this town was just a normal town until the 1960s. My mom used to bike through it as a kid and always complemented the folks as very kindly people who would sit on their porches and leave their doors unlocked at night. The coal fire is a sad story; look up Offroaders Centralia for a detailed site about the then and now.
sonicepochguy 3 years ago
I don't know, maybe it's cus I grew up in Hong Kong and Chicago which are both metropolises. I can't imagine living anywhere where there's not at least a few thousand people around me at any given time and the vibrancy of city life. It's very strange to me. But I'm getting a sense of why they'd want to live there. I sometimes want to escape to places with less people too.
