There are so called germanic languages; german, austrian german, swiss german, dutch, danish and the scandinavian languages; swedish, finnish and Wenckes mother tongue norwegian. Those languages are very similar with grammar and vokabulary. Many people in europe are able to speak more than one germanic language. But I think the reason was...the german music industry is the first in europe! I hope I could answer your question :-)
Finnish is no Germanic language. It is similar to Estonian and related to Hungarian.
I think you're linguistic argument is not that good: France Gall and Mireille Mathieu also sang in German, even though their mother tongue (French) is not at all similar to German. By the way English is a Germanic language, too. I think that Norwegian is not thaaaaat similar to German. But it could be easier to learn German for someone who's mother tongue is a Germanic one.
