  • Lawrence Olivier is a great actor.

  • Still the best version so far ever. Thank you.

  • One of my favorite movies of all time...I love Heathcliff.

  • This is the best movie ever made, and puts every remake to shame. Impossible to find on dvd, so thanks very much for uploading. May I please see the rest? I'm neither thief nor stranger (sir), merely your neighbor...

  • What a brilliant transformation of character as Heathcliff looks out the window and desparately begs and pleads for his Cathy to reappear! It breaks my heart!

  • @Daiseehead My husband and I have stayed in Hawarth, Yorkshire, UK three times. That is where the Brontes lived and died. It is a beautiful place. The first time we stayed there was at the Black Bull, that is where Bramwell, their brother used to drink. He was an artist and a drunk. We stayed at the back of the Black Bull looking over the cemetery where they were buried. We used to open the window and look out fancying we could hear Heathcliff shouting for Cathy. Bramwell died.

  • such a love story. the music just carries you away.

  • The absolute best! Memorable. Unforgettable!

  • The most romantic part of the book, when he cries for Catherine. T_T

  • Johnny Depp for Heathcliff? Sorry, he may be "dark" in a lot of his films, but he's a sweet, *whimsical* kind of dark, not violently passionate & broody dark. Perhaps someone like Christian Bale can pull it off better. Well, we want someone even swarthier, more sinister than Bale.

  • @723cielo yeah i guess it would be difficult to look for the right heathcliff. Toby Stephens might do but he's already too old now.

  • @Rosamorrable Wow, it looks like he could do the job! Is he really that old? lol

  • @723cielo lol actually he would be great as heathcliff in the last part where the story of little Cathy starts but he surely won't be able to play Heathcliff at 20 yrs...

  • isn't Heathcliff supposed to be darker of skin? from the description of Ellen Dean, his parents could have been indian and chinese. Was it a reference to his real appearance or was it only a fantasy she created to console Heathcliff?

  • It's an amazing film; just too bad that all of the characters are horrid. Emily Brontë was one twisted woman.

  • @missiworld i've not finished the novel but i quite agree with you... yet, i couldn't agree with Bronte better because this is what life is all about after all - no perfect beings, but people who get hurt, are disappointed with life, and if a we are blessed by a transitory joy, we should be considering us lucky...

  • Without question one of the greatest love stories of all time, this movie, so well portrayed by the wonderful cast brings such emotion to Bronte's timeless classic.

I visited the Yorkshire moors, I'm sure the both of them are there Cathy and Heathciff, wandering through the desolate land hand in hand forever.

  • The old movie is much better than the new one! I'm suppose to be reading the book for school, but books are just too boring... unfortunately.

  • @ekiss2010

The book is AMAZING!!! trust me, as soon as you get into it, you won;t be able to put it down! I know the begining is a little hard to get through, but as soon as they start talking about heathcliff you'll be trapped! its amazing

  • Seeing this makes me really want to reread the novel

  • it is so old yet it is still one of the best films ever I cry as soon as the music starts 1939 was a good year for movies

  • Saw the movie before the superbowl game! I adore this movie, I must have seen it about 80 times! Thanx for posting!..Laurance was such a hottie! Watch Rebecca, if u are a fan of his!

  • Laurence Olivier was such a fox-

  • It's on TCM right now!

  • i was just watching it on tcm!

  • Them movie is better than the book to me....

  • hummph..This is the 2nd time watching this on my computer(My sis is hogging the TV)..Still..This is one of my faves..Oh I thought the book was very bleak and dreary..Well...Time for a glass of wine(or 3)..And Im going to enjoy the movie..Again!!!

  • Heathcliff was probably a bi-polar personality.

  • i was thinking that about cathy,too!hehe!

  • @grainofsandfan Or just plain psychotic.

  • I love this movie!!!!!!!

  • This is a nice version but I don't think any of them do justice to the book. If you really want to enjoy Wuthering Heights, read the book!!

  • I love this movie! Laurence Olivier is fantastic!

  • The following comments are not on the quality of the film (Merle, for instance, was splendid) but on the film as an adaption of Emily Brönte's "Wuthering Heights":

I felt the film did many disservices to the novel: it halved the story, sped up events to a frightening degree, got the chronology all wrong, had a FAR too cheerful music score, and above all completely rewrote the character of Heathcliff. In this film, Heathcliff is barely violent, and hardly sadistic, much unlike the literary HC.

  • True, but to fit that long of a story into one movie is difficult. If you've seen the other versions, they're really quite terrible because of the rush of trying to fit the entire novel in the film. Heathcliff was also barely violent in the novel, striking Cathy (daughter) and Isabella only certain times...he never once struck Catherine E. Or anyone else. It was through manipulation that he hurt people. Thats sadistic all on its own.

  • Of course, such a novel would be difficult to put into film... I think they should have done it like they did "Les Misérables" with Charlotte Gainsbourg, a four-part series each about an hour long.

About Heathcliff's violence, he tried to stab Isabella and beat her till she was black and blue, which she stated as much. He also tried to hang her dog. I agree this wasn't his main characteristic, but it's a definite one -- everything he does physically is forceful. Even his signs of affection.

  • erm hello, pretty violent when he beats up Hindley!

  • Personally, I didnt like how they changed certain lines of the film. Or how Heathcliff struck Catherine. Or how Catherine's character was a little...less "crazy" here than she is in the novel. Catherine is rewritten more than Heathcliff if anything.

  • im sixteen and in my school play for drama where doing this i got the part of heathcliff , but anyway this is a master piece at its best 5*

  • i wanna go back in time and direct a movie form this era.lol

  • Emily Bronte's masterpiece is perfectly sublime in this film version directed by the great William Wyler. Merle Oberon should on merit have won an oscar! Although the story is reduced it is also simpler and more glamorous than the book. Everything is captured ... the haunting love and the deep singular emotional power. Emily Bronte died thinking her unique literary efforts were a failure but her memory will shine in our eyes and in our hearts by this film as well as her spellbinding book!

  • @Spiritualsound dang u should become a movie critic or something

  • @Spiritualsound AWESOME COMMENT

  • Classic , but sadly forgotten today . Da new version ( wid Fiennes ) is da shites ...

  • is this movie based right out of the book? or has it been changed?

  • My professor showed us this film today in class.

    Great F'n movie!

  • My favorite movie of all time I even have the book.

  • One of the greatest movies ever made. Surprisingly underrated today. Beat Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for Best Picture at the New York Film Critics Awards, it certainly is in their league.

  • Load sound again, dog looked n barked, no one would believe again in my house

  • No! not 1 of 11 again! 11 or 12 what is this! I know my house is haunted now!

  • no remake will ever be better than this classic

  • I am currently reading Wuthering for my college english class...I can now tell where jk rowling got a lot of her ideas from...

  • Best. Version. Ever. Period. Thank you so much for uploading!

  • The new BBC version of this is good. I haven't read the book, so I have no idea if it is done accurately or not, but it's still very good.

  • You must read the book before you judge the movie.

  • Fair enough. I've read the book now and I think that the BBC version wasn't very true to the book.

  • I honestly think that its a tie between this version and the 1993 version. But the 2009 version is nothing at all to the book

  • is this movie exactly like the book?

  • No. Not at all. Well...in the begining, yes, but this movie doesnt even complete the story. The movie stops when Catherine dies, but the book continues the tale. Catherine dies giving birth, you see. and the movie doesnt even show she's pregnent and it ends. So no. This mive isnt like the book

  • Why haven't they put this on DVD? It's so brilliant!

  • @RoxanneJ81 It is available on DVD...

  • all attempts to remake this film were a waste. this classic we see above was made in 1939 and in my view and i think many others is that this version is untouchable . we will never see anything like this again with todays so-called actors/actresses .

  • I used to love this film

  • I still do!

  • Yank accents ruin the whole movie. This book was set in England, not yankeeville.

  • I'm not sure where you got your info, but this classic version is loaded with native Brits, starting with the two leads, Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. David Niven, who played Edgar Linton, is also a native Brit, as is the veteran actor who played Doctor Kenneth, and the then-young actress who played Isabella Linton. I believe Leo G. Carroll, who played the servant Joseph, and the actress who played Ellen Dean, were also natives to British soil.

  • Did you see the start of the film?

Did you listen to the young Cathy and Heathcliff.

Oh gosh darn, they sure weren't from Blighty I can tell you.

  • Well, I don't know if the kids were English or not, lol; but most of the adult actors sure were.

  • Take a look at Part 1 of 11.

    It's cringeworthy.

  • Oh, I've seen this version many times; it's my favorite. The kidsmay not be Brit, I have no idea. All I do know is that the vast majority of the adult leads are.

  • Hmm, I like this Heathclif; he is how I immagined he would look.

  • This Heathcliff is and always will be, IMHO, the best film Heathcliff EVER, in the best version. The Brit playing him is one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, (Sir) Laurence Olivier. Decades before the wonderful Kenneth Branagh became the world's leading screen champion of Shakespeare, Olivier was the one bringing The Bard to the masses. He was an amazing actor, and a very handsome man. He was the husband of Vivien Leigh, who played Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind". Outstanding.

  • Never read a book in a shorter version of itself, or any other way than the author intended it to be read. That is most likely the reason behind your disliking. Also, there are books with all of the character's names and how they are related to one another in some publishings. The Barnes & Noble publishing does.

  • before I start watching, please tell me...is it possible to enjoy the movie without having read the book first?

  • The original is an all-time great. It is worth noting that it won Best Picture at the New York Film Critics Awards over the likes of Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach and The Wizard of Oz.

  • Oh no! I just found out that Hollywood is remaking Wuthering Heights! I cannot believe it! And they are not even using very good actors...Playing Cathy shall be Brit actress Gemma Arterton (from Quantom of Solace) and playing Heathcliff will be Ed Westwick of Gossip Girl fame! I am mollified! It is too horrific to contemplate that this story shall be trampled on by such actors. The director has hardly even directed any movies, and the ones he did were complete crap! Look it up on IMDB.

  • please tell me you're joking

  • No, I'm not joking! My mouth dropped open when I read about it...

  • they should take Johny Depp for Heathcliff and the actress that plays Kate in "LOST" for Cathy. :D

Collin Firth can play Edgar, and Keira Knightly can play Cathy Junior...or something. :D Couldn't think of suitable actors for Hareton and Linton, any ideas? :D

i will play Nelly, because that's my name. :D

  • YES i was thinkin the same thing, jonny depp would be perfect! And colin firth for edgar! :)

what about the original malfoy of harry potter for linton? haha probly not.

  • why not??? i think the actor who plays draco would totally work for Linton! :D

  • glad you agree! that blonde hair and sneering sickly face would be perfect for linton heathcliff!

I think i should play hareton, im big, handsome and very bashful lol

  • LOL go for it

  • LOL!

  • wel im glad u like the idea!

  • I think several people have said they'd like what's-his-face as Hareton. I forget the kid's name: he's the son in the Count of Monte Cristo and I think he's in The Tudors show.

  • Honestly, nothing Hollywood does surprises me. Hell, even MTV tried to do a modernized remake of "Wuthering Heights" several years back, and it was embarrassing. There are actors who could do justice to this wonderful piece of literature... but I'm not encouraged by the names you're mentioning. Even though it took its liberties (including ending at the halfway point in the book), this version remains No. 1 for me. The casting was practically perfect.

  • Well, after seeing Gemma Arterton's Tess of the D'Urbervilles I don't think she will be half bad - she is RADA trained you know! But Ed Westwick... hrm :\ Coupled with the fact it's hollywood and bound to be super-sentimental... double hrm :\

  • I totally agree with you.

  • I just finished reading the book Wuthering Heights two days ago! (:

  • Aaaah finally! I've been hunting everywhere, couldn't find this film online, at the library, or even at local rental-places.

    Thank you, sahmm19. I've subscribed. :)

  • amazing book

    amazing movie

this story makes me think in the girl i'd like to meet, just for a hug...

  • i imagined lockwood to be younger.

  • Me too, but remember he was fed up of humanity, so maybe he had lived enough...

  • It takes place in the late 18th century, 1774 and on.

  • When is this movie supposed to take place?

    During the Gold Rush?

  • Have read the book but never saw any screen version of "Wuthering Heights", except for these clips on youtube. Have to say that this looks like a classic movie!! Laurence Olivier looks like how I pictured Heathcliff for a start! The more modern versions all have Heathcliff with long hair and no sideburns - no, no, no! That's not how a 19th century ploughboy would have looked like. Heathcliff is a cruel, brutish, dark character, not a dashing hero.

  • my favorite movie of all time. Perfectly cast. This story tans-ends time. It shows that love isn't always head over heels, romeo and juliet. Heathcliff lived for Cathy...and she did love him, but had too many faults for them to realize thier love fully.

  • totaly outstanding classic of a film that stand's out a mile compared to the thug like trash of today . the wind torn weather of rain and snow swept mores lent themselves perfectly to this beautiful story of love tragedy and death. the final scenes of the film are forever heratbreaking . these perfomances by the great sir laurence olivier and merle oberon . will be with us for decades to come . a true masterpiece ..

  • To all the people comtemplating whether or not they want to watch this movie, please watch it, for your sake. It is such a great film, and you'll love it if you love the book as I do. Besides, Laurence Olivier doesn't hurt. :)

  • i agree with you 100% . this amazing film is 70 years old . what a contrast to the smug sneering in your face garbage of today's so called films and actors . oh how lucky we are to have this excellent reminder of what a real film is .

  • I very rarely enjoy modern movies. I'm 15, and for the most part all I do is watch the classics when it comes to movies. They have such atmosphere, such beauty, such intelligence. I am always so impressed by the craftsmanship that so many of them display.

So many of my friends think it is so strange that I rarely watch new movies, but once I have seen something like Wuthering Heights, how can I go and watch Transformers?

    This movie is a 10/10.

  • i totally agree :)

  • I picked up Wuthering Heights and read it during that really hot summer of 2003. It is the best story I have ever read and one of the best times I had reading it. If you have not read it, then you have my envy, becuase you have the greatest literary treasure yet to discover for yourself.

  • this movie is on hulu still,I think...I glad to know its posted, thanks so much!!

  • Oh my gosh I so want this movie but I can't find it anywhere. I can but its in Koren. I've looked on Amazon but I was hoping to find it in a store so I wouldn't have to pay shipping. Does anyone know of a store that would have it? Thanks:)

  • it is different from the book bc Isabella died when their son was 12. So she would not be there with Heathcliff. She left him soon after their marriage due to his physical and mental abuse. The new TV movie that was on pbs in january 2009 follows the book more closely with some extra changes not in the book.

  • My advice for everybody is: READ "WUTHERING HEIGHTS"!!! It will be branded in your memory..it's so moving, violent and believe me it will give you goosebumps!! Let me know..

  • i grew up watching the movie but never read the book, does the film stay true to the book?

  • no i think the ending of this version is very different to the ending of the book. But i may be thinking of another movie version, but all of the movies could never be true to the book, it's just too big to put down properly and have the same effect, so i suggest you read it although it will take a while. (Has to do this for school )

  • the film only really covers the first half of the book, as well as the very end; the book goes on to follow the lives of the second generation and what happens to heathcliff inbetween cathy's death and his reunion with her ghost.

  • I still can't understand his obsession of her, the way she treats him. It's stupid. The human spirit can only take so much torment and mind games before you wise up, and move on. Still a great movie, if for no other reason the mood of it.

  • Unfortunately, some people don't wise up and and move on, therein lies the possibility for obsession as in Heathcliff's case. Cathy could and did- eventually move on but Heathcliff never could settle for anything less....

Sorry- it's one of my favourite books of all time. I am about to watch this film so I hope it lives up to my high ideal of the novel, much as Heathcliff expected Cathy to live up to his high ideal of her. I hope I am not as bitterly hurt as he was her imperfections ;-)

  • Sorry to sound so mean and cut, and dry. I know things aren't so cut and dry. I of all people know that. It isn't what happens to you, it IS about how you handle it and I know that, and it's just a movie, but you get so swept up in her ill treatment of him, despite her love, that it sort of becomes an aggravating soap opera after awhile. I love it still though, and am too lazy to read the book. They are often so different from the movie.

  • i'm reading the book and i'm loving it so far!

  • this classic film stands the test of time . the beautiful music lends itself pefectly to the tortured wind swept scenery alongside the outstanding acting of sir laurence olivier & merle oberon . a true classic that will break hearts for ever more . they surely dont make them like this anymore ..

  • in the book isn't Heathcliff black???

  • no hes a gypsy, he has black hair & eyes and tanned skin but hes not black. the gypsy or "roma" people are their own ethnic group, like 1/2 way between black and white

  • No, he's really tan.

  • recien la he visto hoy, y me parece un film extraordinario, pudiendo catalogarse entre las diez mejores peliculas del siglo anterior.

  • I love this old movie, and like slumbers2, I think I could watch it everyday-

  • I love this film, watched it when I was a child and cried, and I cry now watching it again. So much love and sadness. Two people that loved each other, but, never really got to be together. But their love never dies. Biggest weepy ever made.

  • I love this movie does anyone know where I can buy it? Thanks:)

  • I have found the film for sale on ebay for under 15 bucks. You might also like the movie Jane Eyre, but make sure you get the 1944 version with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine, its better than any of the other ones out there. Hope this helps :)

  • I finished to read the book now, and I tried to see the modern film, but its very summarizeeee! so, let´s see!

    I love the book!

  • I'm reading the book, and I love it! It's sooo passionate! Heathcliff is my favorite personage. It's soo saaad. :( I'm really curious to watch the film-versions, I'll watch this one after I've finished the book.

Wuthering Heights is now already one of my favorite books (I loved Charlotte's Jane Eyre too btw)

  • my second fav movie i could watch this everyday

  • Guh, Laurence Olivier was so man pretty! I love this movie, its one of my all time faves for sure!

  • Thank you for this magically experience.

    Many blessings,

    Gab x

  • what i admire as a englishman about david niven is that when his country needed him and england was at war with germany in 1939..he came back and re-enlisted in the army and fought in the d-day landings and right on to germany...he didnt stay in hollywood where there were no bombs fallin like some other british film stars did?

  • wow the contrast between he and muhammad ali aka cashes clay is remarkable!!!

  • did you know that merle oberon was involved in a serious accident in 1937 and was badly scarred..apparently clever lighting and the special effects of the day eliminated it on the screen......also her mother was indian and father british....

  • did you know that merle oberon was involved in a serious accident in 1937 and was badly scarred..apparently clever lighting and the special effects of the day eliminated it on the screen......also her mother was indian and father british....

  • i look like Heathcliff hehe,really...I love this movie,it's the best, but it's a shame i don't found it with spanish subtitles or audio here in Cusco(Peru),i had to add all the subtitles with a video editor,i was exhausted but i'm very happy with it.
