Well i dont think about Bill Maher as an arsehole because he does proof a lot of points in the movie. But as an agnost i dont agree his extremist going against religion. But you have to agree that there are some people in the world were you can honestly can say they using religion as a bad excuse for his actions and i think religion isnt bad but mankind just can live with it the proper way that its supposed too. (srry for my pour language and interpunction im dutch)
@superrfr3ak Completely agree! What most agnostics/atheists don't understand is how to talk respectively to strong believers. Since God is most people's life cornerstone, it is downright dangerous and traumatic to fiddle with the concept at such extremes.
i don't believe he was an ass. he treated almost everyone as intelligent individuals, even when they were not. he's a funny person by nature and looks for humor in everything.
the film is not agnostic, it's atheist. I used to be agnostic too, screw it you cant fight a fight when you are an agnostic. You need to take position. Religion is and HAS BEEN the downfall of humanity. It MUST leave our world! We have come a long way to still believe in fairy tales.
Personally, I don't understand why your video recieved so many dislikes. This was an excellent review of the film (which is, indeed, a documentary, although an unconventional one). I, too, am an agnostic/athiest, but I did still consider Maher's methods of disproving religion at little unethical. He should have been fair and informed the pious people he interviewed what the documentary was about so they could better defend their beliefs. Their beliefs would still loose...but ya know. :)
It is a documentary, though not a typical one. Bill goes around asking questions to people and I'm sure they did sign some sort of waver. The point is, you're giving these people the exact same priviledge that they somehow think they deserve, and that's the right to not have their beliefs criticised. Bill Maher wasn't all Ray Comfort about it, he went to people who DID have thousands of followers and money behind them. So don't act like these people were the common rabble among the street.
All he does is ask question, at any point the "religious" could have raised fact (real facts, not "George Bush" facts).... but they DIDN'T and thats because they CAN'T. The idea here is to wake people up, so they can focus on the real issues and real threats to society!
God, so much hate on this video. But yes, I definitely agree with you. I think it's arrogant of him to call everyone idiots for their beliefs just because they don't share his. It's bigotry. I also think that to shake another person's beliefs is to measure out negative karma -- if you believe in such a thing. His conviction is remarkable, but hell -- he pushes his beliefs (or lack thereof) on people just as much as any radical Christian.
Bill Maher is a comedian and his views are well known. Religious is not a documentary. It's a comical critique of religion. The comedy writes itself, with the help of Bill's comic input and some clever editing...The religious fanatics and morons featured in the video are mocked, but it does not detract from the fact they provide the content.
Hi there! I am Christian and happen to agree with the main point of your video. I see that you care about how to treat people, regardless of what they believe or do not believe. You have that "natural affection" of which the bible speaks about. Unlike some of the people that I see commenting here, whose level of intelligence and human warmth is demonstrated by their choice of words towards you.
As he interviews with the people he states that he is just asking questions and if they believe what they believe then they should defend it. Most people couldn't. NOT HIS FAULT. You're a dumb bitch. No one cares for your opinions.
"... but I am, you know, an agnostic thinker, and I really do feel that I need some sort of proof, and I do believe in something."
Let me get this straight you need proof, but you believe in something? What proof do you have for what you believe in? How can you call yourself agnostic with saying that?
@ItzFrostee Yes an agnostic is by the common standard admitting you don't know. What she is an agnostic, meaning she doesn't know. She goes on to say she needs proof. All of this is great, but then to say that you do believe in something. Saying you don't know, and then saying you do believe is contradictory. Also, saying you need proof for it (of which there is none), and saying you believe is contradictory.
@djlalo93 Well you wrote with caps lock down.... you must be right. I'm not really sure what you're trying to get at, but I never cookie cuttered any religion. In fact, I didn't even say the world religion. I'm not sure how I could have been referring to religion if i didn't even say it. You pretty much have said nothing intelligent, thanks for playing though.
yes we all know what bill maher does. most of us have been watching him for years... to say its bad that he tricks ppl into exposing their ignorance is just incorrect. how u expose ignorance isnt the issue ist the ignorance that is the issue.
agreed. not a documentary. maher obviously had a angle/agenda. for it to be a documentary he should of at least remained neutral, like louis theroux and others do. The film could of been a lot better using the same material just approached differently.
You have some very valid points. Personally I do like this film, and don't think the way he went about it was wrong, but there were definitely flaws. Maher can come off as very condescending sometimes, but despite this, at the heart of the movie I believe is someone who does care about people, and does not like how corrupt and hurtful religion can be at its worst.
I like agnostics because they, at least, know how to think of things from a non-biased viewpoint, something I find lacking in both Atheism and Religion.
It is fiction to be sure, but it is NOT something to base morals on. Read the old testament. God is a narcissistic murdering machine. God even murders children with no remorse. In the new testament Jesus says he supports the old testament god and condones stoning disrespectful children. I can't get behind these creatures at all. I believe Maher treated the religious in his movie with great respect. He only asked questions, questions these bozos couldn't answer because their beliefs are stupid.
... Two things. One, if one's beliefs are true and backed up by evidence or free from logical fallacies, then they should be difficult to demoralize. Second, even if one's beliefs are COMPLETELY NUTS and a delusion, arguing and disagreeing is always helpful ( although theists in most cases think otherwise). And finally, Agnosticism is NOT concerned with belief, but with knowlege. Sicne you still believe in some power, then you are more of an agnostic theist.
"Hahahahaha....LOL....ROFL...Ha¬hahahaha, you are a joke! Go now and take a shower, lose some weight, and learn to speak better! This is the only way you can become a sister wife"
eag11e
This is how an antimormon speaks and he says J.S was a con man and he is in Christ
Alot of rude responces on this video. Why cant people make their point without using vulger language? i think you are being reasonable from what I have seen of Bill Mahers movie.
There are good reasons not to tell the religious people, "Hey by the way, this is for a movie denouncing religion."
First because they might not even talk to him. Second, because it might change their responses. He wanted to show what these people really believed. The problem presents itself very clearly in one part where a guy stands up and says something along the lines of, "I'm not gonna have any part in this if this is what the video is about."
We all knew they would react...in fear like any threatened organism. But...wait a minute, Ive seen many of these videos trying to boycott Mahers film, and, do you see the like-dislike bar? Oh Oh something is wrong...hahaha
@willstoz what is invalid about hypocritical opinions like yours is that you relentlessly drone chicanery about religion which to you has no immediate consequence but you bend over backwards for your government to rape you in the exact fashion you claim any religion "traps" your mind and "millions" of others.
why would you need the bible as a sousce of morality when it was written by people who've lived almost a millenium ago in a completely different type of society not to mention that they hardly knew anything at the time- when you're just as much of a human than they were.
1. Nobody in the film appeared without their written consent. Even if they consented before being interviewed, they knew they had consented, and knew they were being filmed and that others would watch. They could have stopped talking or walked out any time they wanted.
2. Well of course Maher is going to be biased toward his own position. Everyone does that, including the endless stream of religious videos showing 'dumb atheists''.
3. The film is about religious silliness, not agnosticism.
The film is great, and Bill is just being him. Religion gets a free ride and I'm happy to see it put down. We(human race) should grow up and stop believing in fairy tales.
I think you're pretty clueless. Why base your morals on something not to be taken literally? Not to mention that as others in these comments have said, the bible is not a moral work. I think Maher is way too nice about it personally but other than that he nailed it. NAILED IT.
2) Maher's points had been the only ones shown in their entirety
3)he should have found professional people who agreed with his agnostic belief system for a truly well-rounded piece and to afford more credibility to it.
Question. Why should you warn anyone that someone is going to ask you about your beliefs? Professional people who don't believe in God or religion? I dunno, damn near every scientist on the planet?
You're wrong, I don't care about Bill Mahar at all, however his methods did not bother me at all, as a matter of fact, AFTER seeing the film, I liked him more. It's not HIS fault that they chose to believe in idiocy.
Seriously...the message in the film to Atheists/Agnostics wasd to 'come out of the closet' and make our presence known and you're sitting there worried about their judgement?? I dare them to challange me so they can see how flawed they're logic is.
Irrefutable logic does make people look and feel dumb. That's how it goes. BTW, my favorite Bible story is not Noah and the flood, it's Noah getting corn-holed by his own son right after the flood. Thanks for writing that one down Moses, we learned a whole lot from that one.
one thing that you forgot to mention is that bill maher is a comedian of course he makes fun of the guys he interviewed. the way i saw it is that the comedy comes first, the title alone is a clear indication that this is a comedic film of course his message is not far behind. with regards to "breaking their beliefs" he was meerly asking them simple questions that can be answered rationally with the absence of religion.
I used to be so happy because I was going HELL. Then Santa told me it was an imaginary place. Dammit I've been cheated. How did I end up here anyway? I wanted to see people popping huge zits. Cheated again.
@mrabra23 you sound pretty fucking dumb aswell beliving and worshiping something you've never seen, but I agree she's a dumb bitch too. The man says what he wanted to say he did not do it in a rude way. And he's just saying what everybody else wants to say. I approve his documentary
Who got the funding for his wardrobe from the offerings to the church. He was trying to flip the story around so that Jesus looked like a conservative, therefore, so could he. I don't agree with everything Bill Maher says and does. For instance, I don't like his premise for dressing as Steve Irwin w/ the stingray barb for the playboy Halloween party and say he deserved to die that way. He was a wildlife activist to the highest bidder in the way he was. How do you dishonor that?
Alright. I just watched this movie for the second time. I see you sort of understand Bill Maher's approach. I don't think he was that hard to every religious figure he met. Yeah he pissed off a few of them to the point where they cut to the next scene. Lol. He just doesn't understand the denial these people have for their actions that go against their beliefs; like that pimped out former rev.
"Bill Maher takes them aside...and breaks their beliefs down infront of,eventually, milions of people"...
the truth is a cold bitch...some times you just need to put it out there. Yes he can be an asshole but I, like Bill, am also tired of religion and it's bullshit, tired of how it divides people, tired of how it controls and traps the minds of millions, how it impeded scientific and technologic progress for so many years. The sad part about it is that people are still living in this delusion.
@willstoz I think the problem is not that he was breaking down peoples beliefs, I agree it's something that needs to be done, but the fact that he did it on screen. We need to feel sorry for these people, not laugh at them or make big deal about it. If someone had been miseducated as a child in any other form we wouldn't think it was ok to publicly humiliate them like that.
@willstoz If you want the cold truth your complaints against religion are a waste of time. If you are the rational, factual side then ultimately any issues or problems that face human beings are meaningless. Oh no, a race of creatures doomed to non-existence for all of eternity suffers because of religion! And even, hypothetically, if they prospered under atheism, they'd still come to the same conclusion of pointless death! So, what are you worried about, we're all f'ed anyways.
@willstoz Totally agree, and don't forget about how religion has been the perfect excuse for horrible crimes...and counterstrike with more violence..."In the name of _________ (insert name of a god here) we will kill them!"
@willstoz I have a few questions for you why do so many atheists have to use foul language, and how does foul language help your argument? Why am I delusional for believing in Jesus Christ as lord and savior?
@arecuk1 You're not delusional, you're right on, brother, and you've merely responded to the truth that God has given you. They have the truth, too, but would rather reject it and insult everyone who hasn't rejected it. I believe it's part guilt, part fear, and part blindness that God has given them over to. But try not to respond in anger...I've made that mistake a lot.
@willstoz "I am the way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me". There's the truth, friend; the words of Christ - not Bill.
Also Bill Maher is not agnostic and in the film never declared to be, though you seemed to think he seem to have the same beliefs as your religion he is not agnostic. another error you have is that you talked about how you saw the film and how your religious belief impact the way you viewed it which is just a contradiction of the purpose of the film which was for the view to drop the crutch of religion and to view thing with out the biases of religious belief.
the point of the documentary was not to voice his belief but to open the eyes of the viewers of how the institution of religion has been corrupted and how it has caused problems for human kind. Also that instead of being swept up by religion people should focus on other more important topics and that they should not live life based on a religion but on what is best for them and whats best for others on a global base. You didnt pay attention to the end of the movie the most important part
Bill Maher tone is actually an important part of his film and better emphasizes his point of showing that you shouldn't act nice or politically correct on the subject of religion because to do so is to allow the same perpetuation that has been occurring for so long and that those more enlightened should take a hard stance about the subject of religion so that the message is sent had the documentary been different then it may have been swept up by those delusional believers.
"Interviewers should have been forewarned"? Why? If what they believe is 100%, why would they need to prepare to discuss their beliefs that they KNOW to be true? They already know what to respond with..
Surprisingly, I thought this was gonna be some BS response to the movie, but I agree with your issues. The editing was (perhaps) dishonest in parts, and people he spoke to should have known what the doc was about.... BUT as a filmmaker, I know that they never would have spoken to him if they had known.. and we never would have had the doc. Side note: They said the film was called "A Spiritual Journey" or something in order to get people to talk to them.
If what those people said had been sensible would you think him insensitive for mocking their beliefs? Suppose they said they believe only what can be proven scientifically and he laughed at that. How many people on the religious side would agree with him then? But when Bill ask a grown man how he would feel if it came across the news that a nuclear holocaust was imminent and the man says he would rejoice, Bills a complete asshole for not telling the guy before hand that he thinks he's crazy.
1. If you ever read a bible you wouldn't say that it's moral. Otherwise I can have slaves, beat them, sell my daughters for sex, kill the godless people and take their children for sex, marry 6 year old girls etc.
2. If you're acting stupid I will point out that you're stupid. That's what it is.
@mirta000 I can tell from your comment that YOU haven't read the Bible. You're just repeating the same old attacks on a holy book you haven't read as your sheep like fellow atheists.
@BloodOfRayne actually I did. I wouldn't be critiquing if I wouldn't have read it. It was a school assignment to gain a better understanding into the minds of a man living in dark ages. You seem to never have read it, fr those attacks are actually valid.
I understand that you are attempting to offer a reasonable explanation for the rise of religious institutions, but I suspect you wrongly assume that the rise and history of Roman Catholicism is identical to the comprehensive history of Christianity- it is not. It might serve you well to read a highly reputed Christian writer such as N.T. Wright to better grasp the views of Reform theology Christianity. The N/T canon was the product of centuries of evaluation. It's consistent&reliable
@mirta000 hay i'm no theologian, and i don't believe in god
just saying their are some positive stuff in the new testament. and their where lots of people in ancient times who wrestled with the issue of why the god in the old testament is so evil, in the new one he's a nice guy. after all it was written by people and there where like a handed different gospels saying opposite things.
you can choose what ever you like and learn what lesson you like. that what makes religion so interesting.
@MartianSanta wow. Not a single statement was correct. Not a single one.
1. God is not a nice guy in the new testament - go and read it if you don't believe me!
2. Religion is very straight forward and is followed very straight forwardly by people who believe, it's just that at this day and age there are some people going "this is bad, I'm going to ignore it" which just smells of stupidity.
The one thing I have to say about this is you say "You really have to be in love to not despise him..." and say it's because he's an asshole and mocking people.
I don't understand why these people deserve to be treated in any other way. I mean they honestly believe these idiotic things. Generally if people say or believe in crazy, stupid things they are believed to be crazy stupid people-why should that change when those crazy, stupid things are religious?
i don't even have to watch this video to know that you are a stupid religious nut. how do i know? i looked at how many dislikes there were compared to likes. go suck a fat one, bxtch!
no, you're wrong. she's not a religious nut, she thinks bill maher is making agnostics/atheists (like her) look bad. But people are siding with Maher, and thus hit the dislike button, which I don't really understand. I think there should multiple types of "like/dislike" buttons, including some you could see before clicking on the video. For example, we could warn each other of misleading titles or bad quality videos. That would be separate from whether or not we like the messag
Here's my quick summation: Religion truly is a fairy tale. There is little or no "real" evidence. It is no more believable than "Jack in the Beanstalk"! But religion does sell a product which atheists and agnostics cannot offer. That is: Eternal life in heaven! Religion works because it is based on fear, fear of the eternal pain and misery of hell! Despite how rediculous religions are, I think it's best not to push our views.
@superrfr3ak I will gladly "debate" the Bible with you. You can't simply dub something fictitious without proof....the same applies to proving whether something is true. As far as i can tell the atheists are merely doing what they say religious people do to each other...."mutualistic satisfaction". you practically suck each other's dicks whilst supporting each other's unreasonable views of the topic at hand. Pathetic...
I must say that I impressed by this 18 yr olds insightfulness. She demonstrates a wisdom far beyond her years!...and I happen to agree with her entirely!
@bafda i happen to think your stupid and have no insight, she is just a blowhard and wisdom is just admiting you dont have all the answers. Which was what the movie was about, and over half the views here just wanted to see her naked.. come on she's a decent 5 not that great
How do you know that they don't know what he is doing?! They all have to agree to be on the film. It's a law. I have only really heard of Bill Maher before I watched this and I liked him more afterwards. And you have to keep in mind...he is a comic! That's what he does! Grow up and get over it.
Why go easy on hypocrites or fools? Pie in the sky is an illusion created to get people to accept their shitty lives as part of some grand plan. It's a plan alright a plan to keep you ignorant and poor and grateful for it. What a con job.
So Bill Mahar burst's some bubbles and this is a bad thing because? People need to hear the truth about religion and not the pap they were raised on from childhood when you're young and impressionable and easily scared and brainwashed/
You are really wrong. Unsuspecting people? If you knew anything about films, documentary or otherwise, you'd know everyone participating in the interviews signed release forms fully disclosing the content and reasons for the film. Defending a theological perspective with a well documented history of executing atheists suspected or otherwise, ostracizing and demonizing atheists into the present day isn't a form of mockery? But calling into question the irrational beliefs of Christians is?
I also think that Maher acted like a disrespectful asshole.
And it seems even more wrong when you realise that he has absolutely no right or proof to deny OR verify the existence of a creator.
Anyway, I don`t care about his beliefs or thoughts, I just don`t like him as a person because he has some serious issues which negatively affect other people.
@KeskinTRS As opposed to the people who react negatively to Atheists everyday? It's about time these people were taken down a notch, instead of letting them think that they are greater beings than everyone else.
Well you're putting your beliefs on the internet. More people use the internet daily than they watch movies.

agreed. not a documentary. maher obviously had a angle/agenda. for it to be a documentary he should of at least remained neutral, like louis theroux and others do.

He exposes the "fundamentalist funhouse" side of religion. However, there is definitely a strong intellectual side for theist argument.

He was a wildlife activist to the highest bidder in the way he was. How do you dishonor that?

MrStringSavvy 1 month ago
@willstoz I think the problem is not that he was breaking down peoples beliefs, I agree it's something that needs to be done, but the fact that he did it on screen. We need to feel sorry for these people, not laugh at them or make big deal about it. If someone had been miseducated as a child in any other form we wouldn't think it was ok to publicly humiliate them like that.
Sciocc0 1 month ago
@willstoz If you want the cold truth your complaints against religion are a waste of time. If you are the rational, factual side then ultimately any issues or problems that face human beings are meaningless. Oh no, a race of creatures doomed to non-existence for all of eternity suffers because of religion! And even, hypothetically, if they prospered under atheism, they'd still come to the same conclusion of pointless death! So, what are you worried about, we're all f'ed anyways.

Bill Maher addressed two man made evils religion and nationalism
Zeledon2000 1 month ago
Also Bill Maher is not agnostic and in the film never declared to be, though you seemed to think he seem to have the same beliefs as your religion he is not agnostic. another error you have is that you talked about how you saw the film and how your religious belief impact the way you viewed it which is just a contradiction of the purpose of the film which was for the view to drop the crutch of religion and to view thing with out the biases of religious belief.
Zeledon2000 1 month ago
the point of the documentary was not to voice his belief but to open the eyes of the viewers of how the institution of religion has been corrupted and how it has caused problems for human kind. Also that instead of being swept up by religion people should focus on other more important topics and that they should not live life based on a religion but on what is best for them and whats best for others on a global base. You didnt pay attention to the end of the movie the most important part
Zeledon2000 1 month ago
Bill Maher tone is actually an important part of his film and better emphasizes his point of showing that you shouldn't act nice or politically correct on the subject of religion because to do so is to allow the same perpetuation that has been occurring for so long and that those more enlightened should take a hard stance about the subject of religion so that the message is sent had the documentary been different then it may have been swept up by those delusional believers.

you can choose what ever you like and learn what lesson you like. that what makes religion so interesting.

Let me explain: You may find historic or archeologic evidence that some statements in the bible are wrong and therefore break it down with evidence.
