first, the level of humanity in its characters.  any other game and your ally is just a partner; here, alex is your friend. its in her expressions, her voice, and that goes for all the other major characters in the game. also, the stellar graphics wouldn't mean to much if valve wasn't so good at directing your eye to them. no cut scenes, and yet you don't miss the writing on the walls or the view of the citadel from the forest. and i could go on
