If you read the manga they tell you the Naru she sees in her dreams is Naru's twin brother who was murderd. Which is why Naru became a paranormal investigator to find his twin brothers body and spirit. Which in the 1st episode is when Naru freaked out when mai called him Naru, was because that was his twin brother's nickname.

this might seem a little odd, but I think Mai is one of the best main character girls ever. she's pretty, but in a normal way, not drop dead gorgeous. She's smart and uses her head, but she's not overly so. She has a crush on Naru but doesn't play it up or be silly with it; she even kind of detests the fact that she likes him. It's a nice change of pace for the normal heroine we're used to seeing. :D
