  • Gave Tapestry to my first real girlfriend, and this still takes me to another time and place. Supremely beautiful song, album and songstress.

  • Since I was about 4 or 5 this has been my all time favourite song :)

  • Who is the writer of this song

  • Carole King wrote it, as far as I know anyhows, in the 1960s ....

  • "You've Got a Friend" is a Grammy Award winning song from 1971. The song, written by Carole King, was included in her album Tapestry of 1971, but was made famous by James Taylor's cover version the same year.

    According to Wikipedia

  • I think maybe your chorus teacher got it backwards. :) I just searched Google images and got a copy of the sheet music. It says, "Words and Music by Carole King." GREAT song either way! :)

  • No . . . Carole wrote it, but JT had number one hit with the song!

  • She is. But she pretty much wrote it for James. They both perform it.

  • Comment removed

  • King said that she wrote the song quickly, in the same amount of time it take to perform it and that she had no one in mind specifically when she was at the piano. Her two daughters were the first to hear it. In the recent book, Girls like Us, the author writes the Cynthia Weil told King that the song was too syrupy for Tapestry and not to include it. Thankfully, Carole did anyway!!!

Thank you for this beauty.

  • uNA CACNCION MARAVILLOSA, CON DOS PERSONAS EXRAORDINARIAS, ES MUSICA PARA MIS OIDOS. GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS.

  • HarmonicThreads: I agree with you. Carole &

James, two Great Musical Icons of the 70's, especially. Classy Lady & Gentleman together!

How more perfect in Harmony than that?

  • Thank you...They did it more than well. Let's encourage both their collective and independent inspirations, and how they can motivate so many others!

  • In these various dialogues in the thread below, we perhaps are losing the track of of the importance of this musical contribution and the event. Taylor and King seem at easy, and in fact, ingivorated by each other. Are we here to judge their collective happiness and appraisal of each other? I think not. Let others (BMI, ASCAP, agents and attorneys) sort out the details. Perhaps, we should just enjoy, and feel good about this contribution.

  • I like both this version and James Taylor's, don't know which one I like better! What a treat to have them both together on the same stage singing together again! ♥

  • who is the original singer of this song?

  • Carole King wrote "You've got a friend" in 1971 for her album Tapestry.

She was a close friend of James Taylor and wanted him to sing her song too. So - in the summer of 1971 - you could listen to a piano-version of Carole and a guitar-version of James.

The Taylor-Version was a number one hit and he won a Grammy for his performance.

King won 4 Grammys for her TAPESTRY-album,

one for "You've got a friend" as best song.

So... there were two original-singers of this song: King and Taylor!

  • REPLY forcarolejonilaura: Yes,agree-however- I believe Carole wrote 1970,released 1971. She,as songwriter-it's on 'TAPESTRY', where She sang it,did give it to James, her friend,&sang it before&after-both were hits!! (It is still Her Signature song.) They are great friends. And she, Carole (Klein) King is a Friend, musical colleague of mine. Sang with her in 2004. Thank You for your facts and knowledge! -Penny

  • Hallo Penny,

must be terrific to perform with Carole!!!

I listen to her music, since I was a teenager.

I adore her for the ability to write fine songs since 50 years - and particularly that she is so natural, fresh and optimistic "after all this time".

Carole shows us, how to grow old with dignity.

When she laughs her eyes shine - and you can see the young Carole from 1971.

    Reinhard (from Berlin, Germany)

  • REPLY for carolejonilaura, Oh, Thank You! We

love Carole & James. I'm older, not in 60's yet, having grown up with her-a professional pianist/singer,as well. Yes her eyes shine, such a beautiful friend-it's about the spirit within! With Love,Peace & Gratitude for your Kind Comment. - Penny

  • Oh Penny,

    you're so right. I'm 53 now!

    Carole has the spririt!!!

And it is a good feeling to grow old with her music.

    Ain't it good to know?

    Where do you live?

Come to Berlin! I would like to meet you.

I also love the music of Laura Nyro. Joni Mitchell too, but she often has that bitterness of heart...

It's a pity, that you are "so far away"!

    Reinhard

  • carolejonilaura, Of course Carole & I are close, however there were many other great singer/songwriters in 70's likeLaura,Joni, etc.

Loved Laura Nyro's music. Live in WI.,USA,now.

Wish I could meet you, too! "So Far Away"- wistful...Keeep in touch! :) Love,Penny

  • REPLY to jhaysapanta: Carole King, who is also the Songwriter,on her album 'TAPESTRY' however shared song with friend James Taylor. Both versions are great!!

  • I disagree this this is Carole's "signature song"... I have several others in mind with which she is more famously associated: It's Too Late? Natural Woman? I Feel the Earth Move? One Fine Day? Will you Still Love me Tomorrow? Jazzman? And, with the success of Gilmore Girls, Where You Lead.

  • Reply to SJdinAudubon: YES, I Agree with You! She composed so many Great songs & proud to call her my Friend/Musical Colleague. Honoured to be with her,as well. She is one of the Best Singer/Songwriters/Pianists of my generation. It is Her'Signature Song'!- Penny

  • REPLY TO SJDinAudubon: Yes, she is a most prolific songwriter & fantastic performer.

"Where You Lead",also from her Tapestry album

was a Hit of hers in the early 70's, as the others, except The Shirelles sang her "One Fine Day" in the 60's. However,"She is'noted'

    for"You've Got A Friend"as her signature song,

given to her friend James. It is associated with both, because each of the two versions are so fine!!

  • REPLY To:SJDinAudubon: Sorry, to clarify-I thought agreed that"You've Got A Friend"is Carole's'Sig.Song'. It Is! She gave it 1st to her friend James, then made it famous again with her piano rendition from 'Tapestry',1971.

But her"It's Too Late" was a fantastic classic

@ the same time. Where ever my dear friend goes, she is asked to sing:"You've Got a Friend"...because she owns it. Musical Regards, truly. - Penny

  • REPLY TO SJDinAudubon: Someone has a problem with one who is a Musical Colleague & Friend of Carole. Grew up with her, know her, & with her again in 2004. She is precious to me & everything I stated is true about dear Carole.

  • Reply to Thumbs Down of the Truthful Comments I made for Carole. Why can't you understand

that I know her well as friend & musical colleague? I wish I could send one of my photos of us together. "People can be so Cold.

They'll hurt ya & desert ya,They'll take your

soul if you let them. Well then, don't you let them." - 'You've Got A Friend'

  • CAROLE!, the songwriter! However, her friend,

James did a fine rendition of her song.

  • Just another amazing performance...and, then to get Carole and JT together was the best!

  • Between this and Carole's "Hold out for Love", I don't know which is a better song...they're both incredible!!

  • Music at its finest.

What good memories this brings back!

  • Such Class, my dear Friend, Carole(Klein) King! Great Songwriter/Singer/Pianist. You go - girl. With Love, Penny

  • Carole's album Tapestry is a treasure. JT and her singing together is one of those legendary moments. She is as good here as the video of them in 1971.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE them... the blending of two pure perfect voices! Have seen JT many times in concerts over the years ALWAYS great!

  • How wonderful that this song with its simple lyrics has endured through so many years. Whether Carol or JT sings it, I shall always enjoy it.

  • And is she not still so very beautiful? Wow...

  • Quite funny how its a tribute to JT but its Carol King's song..

  • Yep, it was his hit, but her words. I'm just glad she got her day in the sun/stardom, thank in part to the success of songs she wrote for others - like this one! Sweet and ironic...

  • REPLY to SJDinAudubon: Not only her words, but her musical composition & hit for her as well. Her gift to James. It is her Signature song.- a Friend/Musical colleague of Carole. Wasn't she a great Songwriter/Singer/Pianist? We agree. Thank you.

  • REPLY to SJDinAudubon: It was a hit for both

    Friends,

and IT WAS & IS HER MUSIC & LYRICS. She is 'Noted' for her signature song.

  • It was Carole King's gift to James Taylor. See how that works?
