King said that she wrote the song quickly, in the same amount of time it take to perform it and that she had no one in mind specifically when she was at the piano. Her two daughters were the first to hear it. In the recent book, Girls like Us, the author writes the Cynthia Weil told King that the song was too syrupy for Tapestry and not to include it. Thankfully, Carole did anyway!!!

Carole King wrote "You've got a friend" in 1971 for her album Tapestry.

She was a close friend of James Taylor and wanted him to sing her song too. So - in the summer of 1971 - you could listen to a piano-version of Carole and a guitar-version of James.

The Taylor-Version was a number one hit and he won a Grammy for his performance.

King won 4 Grammys for her TAPESTRY-album,

one for "You've got a friend" as best song.

So... there were two original-singers of this song: King and Taylor!
