I love all the songs of this fantastic song-writer and singer. This particular song, has retained a large audience over the decades. I got this dvd as a gift of my older brother. James Taylor participated of the first Rio de Janeiro Rock in Rio Festival, when said that "this had been an unique experience in my career".Rime has not passed for both James Taylor and Carole King .
This got me crying! God they are great, both of them. And despite the time that has passed, they have not aged one bit! This is what I call "forever music"!
I really miss this era in music. There is so much contrived BS on the airwaves these days, performed by talentless boors. This is a symbol of what music is meant to be.
This was our Graduation Song.. and now with FB we are beginning to find our old classmates and this song makes the memories even sweeter!! it is not just a song it even better it is BEAUTIFUL MEMORY!!
"You've Got a Friend" is a Grammy Award winning song from 1971. The song, written by Carole King, was included in her album Tapestry of 1971, but was made famous by James Taylor's cover version the same year.
I think maybe your chorus teacher got it backwards. :) I just searched Google images and got a copy of the sheet music. It says, "Words and Music by Carole King." GREAT song either way! :)
King said that she wrote the song quickly, in the same amount of time it take to perform it and that she had no one in mind specifically when she was at the piano. Her two daughters were the first to hear it. In the recent book, Girls like Us, the author writes the Cynthia Weil told King that the song was too syrupy for Tapestry and not to include it. Thankfully, Carole did anyway!!!
Carole , I love this song, is one of the best lirics that I heard, I will never forget you !!!! God wrote this song through you !!!! A Hug to James also a very good friend !!!
Simply beautiful..It seems as if Carol wrote this song for James, they look like best friends, she's got a sparkle in her eyes when she looks at him and they both look so happy when they look at each other..thank you both for highlighting such a precious thing like true friendship. Thank you for this beauty.
Es la mejor manera de darle las gracias a un gran AMIGO,cuando uno la escucha siempre viene a la mente los pocos grandes amigos y la añoransa de no poder departir esta gran cancion como en los viejos buenos tiempos.

Carole King wrote "You've got a friend" in 1971 for her album Tapestry.
She was a close friend of James Taylor and wanted him to sing her song too. So - in the summer of 1971 - you could listen to a piano-version of Carole and a guitar-version of James.
The Taylor-Version was a number one hit and he won a Grammy for his performance.
King won 4 Grammys for her TAPESTRY-album,
one for "You've got a friend" as best song.
So... there were two original-singers of this song: King and Taylor!
REPLY forcarolejonilaura: Yes,agree-however- I believe Carole wrote 1970,released 1971. She,as songwriter-it's on 'TAPESTRY', where She sang it,did give it to James, her friend,&sang it before&after-both were hits!! (It is still Her Signature song.) They are great friends. And she, Carole (Klein) King is a Friend, musical colleague of mine. Sang with her in 2004. Thank You for your facts and knowledge! -Penny
love Carole & James. I'm older, not in 60's yet, having grown up with her-a professional pianist/singer,as well. Yes her eyes shine, such a beautiful friend-it's about the spirit within! With Love,Peace & Gratitude for your Kind Comment. - Penny
REPLY to jhaysapanta: Carole King, who is also the Songwriter,on her album 'TAPESTRY' however shared song with friend James Taylor. Both versions are great!!
I disagree this this is Carole's "signature song"... I have several others in mind with which she is more famously associated: It's Too Late? Natural Woman? I Feel the Earth Move? One Fine Day? Will you Still Love me Tomorrow? Jazzman? And, with the success of Gilmore Girls, Where You Lead.
Reply to SJdinAudubon: YES, I Agree with You! She composed so many Great songs & proud to call her my Friend/Musical Colleague. Honoured to be with her,as well. She is one of the Best Singer/Songwriters/Pianists of my generation. It is Her'Signature Song'!- Penny
REPLY To:SJDinAudubon: Sorry, to clarify-I thought agreed that"You've Got A Friend"is Carole's'Sig.Song'. It Is! She gave it 1st to her friend James, then made it famous again with her piano rendition from 'Tapestry',1971.
But her"It's Too Late" was a fantastic classic
@ the same time. Where ever my dear friend goes, she is asked to sing:"You've Got a Friend"...because she owns it. Musical Regards, truly. - Penny
REPLY TO SJDinAudubon: Someone has a problem with one who is a Musical Colleague & Friend of Carole. Grew up with her, know her, & with her again in 2004. She is precious to me & everything I stated is true about dear Carole.
Carole's album Tapestry is a treasure. JT and her singing together is one of those legendary moments. She is as good here as the video of them in 1971.
Yep, it was his hit, but her words. I'm just glad she got her day in the sun/stardom, thank in part to the success of songs she wrote for others - like this one! Sweet and ironic...
REPLY to SJDinAudubon: Not only her words, but her musical composition & hit for her as well. Her gift to James. It is her Signature song.- a Friend/Musical colleague of Carole. Wasn't she a great Songwriter/Singer/Pianist? We agree. Thank you.

Hallo Penny,
must be terrific to perform with Carole!!!
I listen to her music, since I was a teenager.
I adore her for the ability to write fine songs since 50 years - and particularly that she is so natural, fresh and optimistic "after all this time".
Carole shows us, how to grow old with dignity.
When she laughs her eyes shine - and you can see the young Carole from 1971.

What a lot of beautiful history shared that night. What is so beautiful that each person in the audience looks as if the song was written for them personally too...classic song
first performed by the two ..36 years ago!
