What a thrill it must have been for 1935 audiences discovering this incredibly charismatic new actor, Errol Flynn! I love this movie and the fascinating backstory of its making. This was the first major role for Flynn. At the start of fliming he was petrified, literally shaking as he delivered his lines. There was even talk about replacing him. But as it went along he relaxed, gaining so much confidence that they reshot a lot of earlier scenes for continuity,,, and the rest is cinema history!
Errol Flynn was my first love in my life...in Robin Hood and in Captain Blood... I was 14 years old and I never forget. My husbant look at him only. And I love him. Thanx for this trailler.
What a fantastic cast: Flynn, DeHavilland, Atwill, Rathbone, Stephenson, Guybee and all the others. Michael Curtiz did a fantastic job with a relatively small budget and the film elevated his career as much as the two leads. Don't you miss films with memorable characters and a real sense of story and genuine emotion. Plus that vibrant Korngold score.
True, there were also folks who went on a long trip, got taken by pirates, sold as slaves, and taken again, joined the pirates. The sailors did so too sometimes; it was often a good swap: life on a trade or military ship was hardly better than slavery (remember the Bounty!). Also, so-called "Barbarian" (Asian or Ottoman) pirates offered their hostages a chance to buy their freedom back with a ransom. If the family couldn't or wouldn't pay, the alternative was slavery or piracy...
Errol Flynn was a great actor, and I loved him as Robin Hood. However, I did not like his portrayal of Captain Blood, because it was completely different from the book.
This is the only known film ever made about the over 200,000 whites sold into slavery for ten or 15 pounds each. You won't find reference to whites being slaves in America, only "indentured servants". But in fact, slavery was color blind. Why has this been forgotten by history? See this movie, if you want a glimpse of ...the side of slavery erased from our history books.
@PopeFlores, first after discovery of the America's, anyone could be sold into slavery; color didn't matter at all. First, they tried to put Indians at it, but they all died. Plantation owners had the right to "buy" any sort of slaves. In 17th century, pirates attaqued ships and took everyone captive, to sell them on the colonies. Finally in 18th & 19th century, African slave trade took over. THEN it became a race thing: blacks were declared lifestock, not people. The Church had said so.
@Mangasakka It is also known that in many cases, if a slave ship came under pirate authority, the slaves were given the choice to join the crew or be sold. Most joined. In fact, Pirate crews were often extremely multi-racial :)
Based on a true story of Henry Pitman, a doctor who got caught up in the Monmouth Rebellion 1685. Transported as a slave to the West Indies he and 6 others escaped, fell in with some pirates, rapidly fell out with them but did eventually return to the UK, by which time James II had been overthrown- not quite as dramatic as the film but there you go!
And don't forget Basil Rathbone, at his absolute peak as the evil French pirate! Without his brief part in it, this movie would be much less than it is. I'm sure he has been the model for Capt Hook ever since.
This is an excellent condensation of the film! You manage to include all the important scenes, so that the story makes sense. Watching this makes me realize, yet again, what a master director Michael Curtiz was. His staging, camera angles, cutting, etc., are brilliant. As are the stars and the film itself. Flynn and DeHavilland were major discoveries by the studio. And what a supporting cast! And Korngold's brilliant music. Flynn was remarkable, especially considering how new an actor he was.
Fantastic film, but what is this piece of music? I keep hearing it on the radio and TV but keep missing what the title is. This has caused numerous arguments with my family so i'd be really greatful if you could clear the mystery up for us! Many thanks
@stephanieplumb It's very easy it's the soundtrack from 1492 a movie by Ridley Scott from 1992 (500th centenary of America's discovery by my country, Spain). The song title is "the conquest of the paradise by Vangelis, you can look for it here in youtube, i hope you will enjoy it, it's very famous and wonderful song.
Klasyka gatunku!
A wonderful movie. Old movies from the 30's 40's 50's have been a large part of the history of cinema. Captain Blood is not only a really good hollywood production but also an extremely interesting movie with a well known cast, including the movie legend errol flynn and the well remembered olivia de havilland. a true classic!

Thanks. So often these things are put together with pop tunes or rock music which just isn't appropriate. For someone like Errol Flynn you need music with an epic, heroic quality; hopefully Vangelis' Conquest of Paradise fits the images shown here.
Yes that may be true! but open you eyes guys! a great number of young teens (12-15) in my school have watched videos of flynn and Havilland and thought it was a great way to get younger kids to watch them! It is nice to show these great 'stars' in a way that will attract a young audience! I agree that it is good to have swashbuckling music, but its nice to show them in new ways and come out of that circle in which is old and bring it to new stages.
Everytime i watch Capt Blood, and he looks through, that grating through the door he looks so different, (I hope you have'nt recorded any of these clips of my videos)

If only Errol Flynn's life lived up to the characters he played, how different the outcome for his posterity!

Errol was amazingly handsome even after had his second head removed. I wonder if he had webbed feet as well? Kidding! :P
