I was in sixth grade when this came out...it blew everyone away...nobody had played guitar like this, it seemed. It's easy to rip EVH for this or the other but he wrote killer tunes and played the fuck out of the guitar.

It makes me feel free, like anything is possible. It feels like a perpetual warm summer day (even on a cold winter night like tonight) Hearing Eddie playing puts a smile on my face because of the exuberant joy with which he plays. He inpires me to play the best I can although I know I'm not as good as him just hearing him makes me think I can be if just for a moment. It certainly doesn't make me think of fart pipes or Wal-mart parking lots.

The guitar solo in Hot for Teacher is the one that Eddie should be famous for. Its a torrid solo, loaded with every move in a guitarist's bag. Eruption's a crowd pleaser though, always has been.
I think that a lot of people missed the boat when they tried to sound like Eddie. There's a lot of real soul in his playing. So many of today's shred heads all have the same tones & all play the same things as fast as they can without trying to "FEEL" the music, and make the notes sing.
You have to remember, that this dude was a pioneer of rock guitar. Eddie set the standard......He is the DADDY! When he hit the scene in the mid- late 70's everyone filled their trousers. I saw him in 1978 supporting Black Sabbath......wow!!! while the other rock guitarist were all playing the same blues scales this guy made a deal with the devil and let rip with new techniques.
I could get about about two notes out and he'd be done with the whole solo. Blazing speed. Listen to his intonation. He so articulate. What he did to rock music is inconceivable. Just amazing!

At the time it was so freakishly advanced. His sound was an evolved Marshall sound, he had the speed, and the chops,.. which were bizzare and head turning. His fills during the songs were great. His riffs were brand new, his intros, etc.. After eddie, the attitude of the guitar totally changed.

Don't blame Ed for the mindless shred that followed him. You don't have to like what he did/does, or even the direction his influence pushed the music, but you have to respect the fact that he brought something new to guitar playing. Not many guys can claim that.
Imagine how Tony Iommi felt standing backstage (I assume this was the 78 UK Black Sabbath tour) - he too was original & influential in his day, arguably even more than Ed.
@Adnoydall Awww geez....where do you begin with EVH? It wasn't just about Eddie's wank speed - it was also his ability to write great blues-based guitar riffs that still sound great today. There are at least a dozen VH songs that are great COMPOSITIONS. Most shredders are incapable of writing a decent song. The other thing that scared us all about EVH when he hit the scene was his TONE. Back then, NOBODY had a guitar that sounded like that - super raunchy and shiny clean at the same time!!

@Adnoydall More going on in Eruption than you think. The structure is great. Melodic call and response, harmonic flow, elegantly bracketed motifs, etc. It's a great composition. The word "wank" would imply no structure or direction, just mindless noodling at high speed. Can't accuse "Eruption" of that. I could name fistfuls of favorite guitar solos of various genres - but in the rock and roll category, when it came out Eruption was as revolutionary as Hendrix' "Star-Spangled Banner"

@mytube8u You're right. The bootlegs are a lot of fun but the studio version still rules because EV trimmed it down into a perfect composition for the album cut. Easy for him as he's probably the best ever at rock and roll guitar composition. Not only was his sound so good back in post-Zeppelin 1978 that it SCARED every rock guitarist, EV could play his ass off and was a brilliant writer. Many younger players don't realize what a HUGE departure EV was from other guitarists back in 78
His type of playing is pure wankery. It was the beginning of the worst era ever for guitarists. And these types of wankers still exist today. You can find them at every music school in America. They're playing a million notes per second, every note out of place and every note completely without emotion. It's just a mess.

It's from a live performance, and importantly from a time when the guitar "solo" was part of a show, esp for rock bands. I saw Van Halen Nov 16, 1978 In Nashville, TN and after they played that epic show (no mistakes, perfect F'ing sound perfect show) Sabbath didn't come out and play at all. The Sabbath fans went nuts and almost started a RIOT, they were tearing chairs from the floor of the auditorium (mind you these where the "OLDER" Sabbath fans) most of the VH fans left after their performance! lol...
The promoters gave circus like tickets to everyone and Sabboth AND VH played another FREE show on the 19th..
Just an added note: Tickets were around 7.50$ if I remember correct! muahahah!
And at the second show Ozzie made some remark about to much drugs and appologized. But the Rumor's where that Sabbath was probably very drunk and drugged which was common for them and after seeing Van Halens EPIC PERFECT show (the crowd was insane and wouldn't stop cheering Van Halen, Van Halen over and for almost 30 minutes) that Sabboth just didn't want to follow that....
Can you imagine what it must have been like for Tony Iommi every night? He must have locked himself in his closet during Van Halen's performance and regretted that he ever agreed to tour with those young punks from California. He was witnessing a new era unfold. Ozzy must have said damn!

The guitar solo in Hot for Teacher is the one that Eddie should be famous for. Its a torrid solo, loaded with every move in a guitarist's bag. Eruption's a crowd pleaser though, always has been.

I think that a lot of people missed the boat when they tried to sound like Eddie. There's a lot of real soul in his playing. So many of today's shred heads all have the same tones & all play the same things as fast as they can without trying to "FEEL" the music, and make the notes sing.

You have to remember, that this dude was a pioneer of rock guitar. Eddie set the standard......He is the DADDY! When he hit the scene in the mid- late 70's everyone filled their trousers. I saw him in 1978 supporting Black Sabbath......wow!!! while the other rock guitarist were all playing the same blues scales this guy made a deal with the devil and let rip with new techniques.

I maintain that I too learned to play Eruption back when cuz it was wild and new, but never felt the mood to cobble a lot of wank together, or play the original often. seems like everybody is touching on this...but when this guy came out in 77-78, there was page, hendrix, nugent, perry, derringer, frampton, neil schon, ace frehley,...and then Eddie. At the time it was so freakishly advanced. His sound was an evolved Marshall sound, he had the speed, and the chops,.. which were bizzare and head turning. His fills during the songs were great. His riffs were brand new, his intros, etc.. After eddie, the attitude of the guitar totally changed.

@nighthawk584 back in 1978 when this came out on vinyl this guitar playing was out of this world i only heard comparable sounds from Richie Blackmore Rainbow live in 1977 live in germany munich but eddie was faster and got more weird licks in his playing.this was like a ferrari F50 came back from the future back in 1978.eddie was great back than but he changed and wasnt so good anymore in the eighties.when Van halen were pretty infamous and their four first albums came out these are the best

Songwriting is typically the process of telling a story using music, lyrics, a song title and, since the "invention" of MTV, making videos, which help bands tell us their tales. Lacking a video, its up to us to tell the story of Eruption. I see and hear teen boys making their ricer cars erupt with noises, and you?

Don't blame Ed for the mindless shred that followed him. You don't have to like what he did/does, or even the direction his influence pushed the music, but you have to respect the fact that he brought something new to guitar playing. Not many guys can claim that.
Imagine how Tony Iommi felt standing backstage (I assume this was the 78 UK Black Sabbath tour) - he too was original & influential in his day, arguably even more than Ed.

@Adnoydall Awww geez....where do you begin with EVH? It wasn't just about Eddie's wank speed - it was also his ability to write great blues-based guitar riffs that still sound great today. There are at least a dozen VH songs that are great COMPOSITIONS. Most shredders are incapable of writing a decent song. The other thing that scared us all about EVH when he hit the scene was his TONE. Back then, NOBODY had a guitar that sounded like that - super raunchy and shiny clean at the same time!!

@Adnoydall More going on in Eruption than you think. The structure is great. Melodic call and response, harmonic flow, elegantly bracketed motifs, etc. It's a great composition. The word "wank" would imply no structure or direction, just mindless noodling at high speed. Can't accuse "Eruption" of that. I could name fistfuls of favorite guitar solos of various genres - but in the rock and roll category, when it came out Eruption was as revolutionary as Hendrix' "Star-Spangled Banner"

@mytube8u You're right. The bootlegs are a lot of fun but the studio version still rules because EV trimmed it down into a perfect composition for the album cut. Easy for him as he's probably the best ever at rock and roll guitar composition. Not only was his sound so good back in post-Zeppelin 1978 that it SCARED every rock guitarist, EV could play his ass off and was a brilliant writer. Many younger players don't realize what a HUGE departure EV was from other guitarists back in 78

It's from a live performance, and importantly from a time when the guitar "solo" was part of a show, esp for rock bands. C'mon - lighten up, it ain't meant to be art, it's entertainment, and only one part of it too - remember he's probably running full-tilt around the stage while playing this, so you'll forgive a little "mess" huh!?!? For us mortals, it's kinda nice to hear a little "mess" from EVH...

It's not Edward's speed that was just great, it's the notes he plays and how he plays them. He's got incredible tone in his fingers and an amazing sense of groove in his playing / solos.. That is something these new age shredders lack, they all very similar and play almost like robots.. This is real guitar straight from the gut..

I saw Van Halen Nov 16, 1978 In Nashville, TN and after they played that epic show (no mistakes, perfect F'ing sound perfect show) Sabbath didn't come out and play at all. The Sabbath fans went nuts and almost started a RIOT, they were tearing chairs from the floor of the auditorium (mind you these where the "OLDER" Sabbath fans) most of the VH fans left after their performance! lol...
The promoters gave circus like tickets to everyone and Sabboth AND VH played another FREE show on the 19th..

And at the second show Ozzie made some remark about to much drugs and appologized. But the Rumor's where that Sabbath was probably very drunk and drugged which was common for them and after seeing Van Halens EPIC PERFECT show (the crowd was insane and wouldn't stop cheering Van Halen, Van Halen over and for almost 30 minutes) that Sabboth just didn't want to follow that....

New guitar players no nothing about tone and how to get it from an amp. They just stomp on a distortion pedal weedle away and chug power chords.
