LYRICS I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail Yes I would, if I could, I surely would I'd rather be a hammer than a nail Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would Away, I'd rather sail away Like a swan that's here and gone A man gets tied up to the ground He gives the world its saddest sound Its saddest sound I'd rather be a forest than a street Yes I would, if I could, I surely would I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would

Viva Peru! :-) was about 14 when this song came out and was living in Peru - Oh Simon and Garfunkel - the memories your songs bring when I listen to them
I would like to know what people think about the lyrics.
Of course I don't know what they intended. However, at age 40, I like to think about it saying something about oppression. I suppose at the age that they were at when it was written that would make them pretty advanced.

tears of freakin joy.i love you both art and paul without your music i most likely would not have been here anymore.peace and love together we can.....
It's amazing that when people compare this to music today they compare it to the shit that gets released in the charts. That's not today's music, it's today's advertising.
Daniel Alomía Robles (3 January 1871–18 June 1942) was a Peruvian composer and ethnomusicologist. He is best known for composing the song El Cóndor Pasa in 1913 as part of a zarzuela, a musical play that alternates between spoken and sung parts, by the same name. This song was based on Andean folk songs and is possibly the best known Peruvian song because the melody was used by Simon and Garfunkel as their melody for "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)", though the song has different lyrics.
@planetamancora The only problem is that the original lyrics are not from Alomia but from another writer Bouldin or something like that, and as u say is based on Andean folk songs what to me means that Alomia maybe wrote this but after listen the original tunes from the indians, or natives of the Andes, I think he took to his tomb if he copy this or thought himself the melody, only he knows !!!! is my opinion only, i dont mean to create controversy,!!! Peace
Esta musica me encanta, la he descubierto ahora a mis 35 años, lejos de mi tierra natal y habre en mi interior viejos recuerdos, añoradas raices. Con esta cancion me siento orgullosa de mi raza, de la sangre que me corre por las venas.....
I was born in 67,and luckily for me , my mother played it a lot . Takes me straight back to the early seventies . It must have contributed to my love of haunting ,melancholic music. It certainly transported me away from my tiny rural Australian town .
This song is the 2nd best thing to come out of Peru! The 1st best thing is my adopted daughter Bethany who was born in Lima in 1989.Very beautiful and sweet.Going to college and working. At least twice a week ppl. will come up and ask her "What are you"? She replies"I'm a girl"! I guess most ppl. don't know what a Peruvian looks likes. She works as a greeter at Sam's Club.
It's a little weird to hear the english version because I grew up listening the spanish one. The composer of the music was Daniel Alomia Robles from Huanuco, Peru. I'm extremely proud that his music traveled around the world. By the way, I loveee the lyrics. <3
@irisalmocar The weirdest thing is ti hear that theres a spanish version, never heard that b4 , this version is the most popular in the world, I wd like to hear the spanish version, even though i know some writer wrote lyrics for the Alomia's melody, i never heard that song on the radio , or in a recording of any type until know on u tube theres a video but i dont think is popular as the P Simon lyrics, I dont know how u can say that u grew up listening the sonfg in spanish,? just curious !!
@tikizia1981 Hi! This is irisalmocar. There is no specific spanish version to this song but I grew up listening to one made by the locals from my city (Huanuco, Peru. Birthplace of Daniel Alomia). This version is nowhere as popular as this song (obvious reasons: publicity, media, location, language, etc). I'm extremely proud that the Alomia' s melody is so famous around the world. Andean music FTW!
@almonacidify You should be proud, im proud because im latinoamericano and this is a latino author, There are a lot of examples of artist or art pieces that we all as americans can be prud of cause they transcend countries and cultures, Im proud of this melody , and Violeta Parra even when im no peruvian or chilean, and so and so many examples like them...... I would like to know spanish lyrics you grew up with. Im latino we should be speaking spanish// Peace to you and yours !!!
Excellent piece of work!! Thank you very much for Sharing!!!!!

maybe it's harder these days to make original music. back then it must of almost felt like everything was new and easy, now it's just rehashed versions of the same old shit, i liked the nineties music though.

@crackfarm76 i think it comes from having God-given talent, or whatever you want to call it. people who write them don't have to stress a finger. that's why i like Mozart more than Beethoven, not that there's anything wrong with Beethoven :))
@Rawego there are greats who toil and toil, like said beethoven, and you love them just for the sweat they pour into it...beethoven to me is all sweat and strength...bach plucked something from the sky...i don't know mozart too well, having been forced to play sonata #16 as a child and hating every minute of it...but i love your sentiment.
I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail. Yes I would. If I could, I surely would. I'd rather be a hammer than a nail. Yes I would. If I only could, I surely would. Yes I would. If I only could, I surely would. I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet, Yes I would. If I only could, I surely would.
@bombkiller3 youre not the only one man i feel like that too...but then i realize we were there before ...idk your spiritual beliefs ...i dont want to push it but perhaps your past life was in the last few decades
@bombkiller3 I feel the same way, except I'm 22 and grew up with rock legends like Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Led Zeplin, The Doors, and others. I simply hope that all of the [even] younger generations can appreciate them as much as we have.
@bombkiller3 i was thinking the same thing. i am 18 too. i'm trying to find a wormhole to get me back in time. if i am successful i'll let you know :)
@bombkiller3 same here!!except Im 17 lol i sometimes get sad i dont live in that era:( S&G are my fav! and te doors and sooo many others.today sucks:// except cell phones lol
I did live in that era, and I can understand how you feel. Still, as the writer said "Enjoy the beauty and power of your youth. It will fade all too soon."
@bombkiller3 as i get older, i appreciate everything older. film, writing, art, music, etc... so many good things from the past. too much crap from the present.
lol i can also remember my dad getting his sterio...it was like a briefcase and we used to tape the top 40 on it on sundays! but this was my fave record of all time :) Kids now dont no what there missing ;(
I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail Yes I would, if I could, I surely would I'd rather be a hammer than a nail Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would Away, I'd rather sail away Like a swan that's here and gone A man gets tied up to the ground He gives the world its saddest sound Its saddest sound I'd rather be a forest than a street Yes I would, if I could, I surely would I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would
@lloydyherbal maybe your my age. My freind paul frank had this simon & garfunkle album and one other. We listened to them constantly, Do you remember Stereo was new technoligy
@iamther....am 42 my friend, hehe...i remember my dad gettin his first stereo system and the older beatles stuff was in mono! my dad was in bands so i was always around `real` music and this ,together with listening to beatles, simon and garfunkel, arthur lee etc I will always be indebted to for truly opening my ears and mind to true music. I`m passing on as much as i can to my young son,7....he already `gets it`,huge beatles fan and learning guitar ;-)
@ZIPPTPH77 if you mean simon and garfunkels version yes but the original el condor pasa is a peruvian instrumental composition by Daniel Alomía Robles

I would like to know what people think about the lyrics.
Of course I don't know what they intended. However, at age 40, I like to think about it saying something about oppression. I suppose at the age that they were at when it was written that would make them pretty advanced.

@bombkiller3 So am i! Most of the music from "our" time sucks, has no message, and most of the artists can't even sing a song live

@forfancy Your totally right, but as the journey of time goes on we are more and more marginalised and manufactured into how we should think! 1984!

"Desde ahora, no se aceptará ninguna modificación a la versión original. Sólo se aceptará la letra que Daniel Alomía Robles asumió", dijo.
Arguyó que esta melodía es un ícono, una suerte de himno peruano y que, en general, la obra de Alomía Robles merece todo reconocimiento.
