The film on itself was OK in general and succeeds somewhat in what it was trying to accomplish. But why some fans are complaining is due to some parts of the book being left out or not fully explained, a majority of which are very IMPORTANT that precedes Deathly Hallows.
i still dont understand why harry dosnt confront draco. harry knew that draco's dad still works for Voldemort since the chamber of secrets... thats wut 4 years ago and still dosnt have the balls to tell everyone that malfoy is part of the deatheaters...
Okay, look I could explain several reasons why your wrong here. Personally I felt that this was one of the most fluid Potter films yet. Most other Potter films feel disjointed and just slapped together. Not this one. It doesn't have as many huge explosions that the past potter films had, but it's not meant to. It's much more contemplative and for somebody who knows where it's going (who I think take up most of the audience) it's riveting.
the movie just didnt explain anything and had no real climax. because of this it just felt like it was leading you to the next movie and not its own special thing.
I think the directors need to realize that true fans won't mind a long movie, just so long as the IMPORTANT DETAILS are kept so everyone can understand it! Why add so much when you could just stay faithful instead? I for one am a big fan of the books and the movies, and realize they are separate entities. Therefore, I enjoyed HBP, but there were def things that could've been improved to make it more pleasing to the audience. Hey, at least we have a movie! Hopefully DH 1 and 2 will be better tho.
I'll also have to say that at least, OotP was less boring than HBP. Yates will never beat Columbus' or Cuaron's mastering of the arts for the HP movies. And at least, there were some good action parts in OotP, like Voldy vs. Dumby in the MoM.
But seriously...the part of the Vanishing Cabinet in HBP was so poorly explained, and they should've added the Gaunts' memories...too bad.
The good thing is, Michael Gambon won't be seen around much, since DH has Dumby only in memories. G-O-O-D.
Subtle? They spent most of the time filming the inside of the cabinet, and it was sloppily explained by Mr. Weasley. It was very disappointing...the whole thing.
Sorry to keep commenting, but I just can't help it. :P
I'd rank Azkaban 1st and I know many other big fans agree. Both PS and CoS were great movies and deserve both the second place. Goblet would rank 4th for me.
But really...about HBP...I'm a big fan and really tried to like it when watching it, but I realized the movie was completely boring.
Among other things: no explanation of why Snape was called Half-Blood Prince; ridiculous part of everyone pointing their wands to the sky...
And Blade...how can someone in their right mind can rank Philosopher's and Chamber in the last places? Are you mental or something? Those movies were amazing! Columbus kept the magic of the books there, and the actors were as good as hell when he was around!
Goblet was good, but not enough since they cut a lot of things and many other were left unexplained. But at least it was hell better than Order, another BIG FLOP of a movie.
I'm still waiting for intelligent people on commenting how ludicrous this movie was...in fact, I was so looking forward to it, and you know that when that happens and you realize is a disaster after you watch it, hits you harder than anything.
I especially hated Jim Broadbent's performance as Slughorn...no one more unlike the character! He was stupidly sloppy and was too nervous. The character was something like that, but not to Broadbent's extreme.
Great stuff man, since you set up your site I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to promote my website. I started my own recently and some FREE suggestions would be nice.
So totally agree, Fury. I have to say we are of one mind. Azkaban was a total success, greatly done by Cuarón, and not as cut and 'edited' by force.
The darkness, the performances, the angle of the camera...everything was great on that movie...unlike this one.
I mean, the dialogues were unbelievably lame and the action was so slow, for instance, Harry's and Ginny's first kiss...that sucked out all of the romanticism of the air!
Well then, I'll have to disagree with you and your bad taste for this movie, Blade, me, like others, being an insane big fan of the series.
The movie was a complete FLOP. It seemed they compacted everything on the book on something difficult to understand...what was with the burning of the Burrow scene, for God's sake?
In an overall, it was a DULL movie...poor dialogues, simple performances....lack of action except for the Quidditch part (e.g. I was so disappointed with Harry vs. Snape).
well i guess its tough to please those who have read the book and those who havent, those us whoread the book did not need a lot of explanation, and those who didnt read the book (should -_- ) find it tough to keep up with the story
I thought it was boring until the cave scene. all the romantic nonsense was just retarded. oh well, it was pretty awesome seeing dumbledore destroy the inferi with the fire. but the book wasn't really any better, so this was a good adaptation. an ok book and an ok movie.
I didn't like how they didn't develop Snape's character.
I mean, the movie DOES have his moniker in the title, and they didn't even fully explain the significance of that.
They just BARELY played around with the question of whether he is a good guy or a bad guy. A viewer of this movie doesn't get the full understanding of Snape's complex character or his motivations.
And oh yeah, Dumbledore's death was kind of anticlimatic too.
i thought the movie was basically a build-up fr the next one and coulda saved some money if i jus woulda known that big V split his soul into parts and hid them so he couldnt b killed so harry now has to find the parts and destroy them, and when the one main character dies
I loathe this movie for it's cuts,it bored the shit out of me all the way through...and then the ending was so underwhelming I thought I was going to shoot myself....
ofc they are going to make cuts. the problem with this movie is changing too much. every adaption has to make cuts at some points, otherwise the movie would be 700pages/700min long...
I liked the movie just the book went into more detail thats why the deathly hollows is two movies long so it can just like the book but who gives a shit because the movies is awesome
You know there are TWO more films after this right? That might be why it felt so incomplete. And also, JK said this was her favorite adaptation of her books yet, so I guess they did a pretty good job, better than what your giving them credit for. Maybe you should sit down and read the books before putting so much blame on the filmmakers. The book ended just as abruptly.
I TOTALLY AGREE. The book may have been a filler to some people, but I regard it as totally unique, like all the books were. It was a lead-up, yes, but had a story of its own. And I loved the growing relationship between Dumbledore and Harry, and how they gave it prominence in the movie. Truthfully, while the movie strayed, it also kept to canon in character elements: eg When Harry visits DD's office after the death, you see sherbet lemon candy on his desk. JKR prolly noticed details like that!
What exactly was a spoiler in my comment? You obviously have no clue what you are talking about if you think my saying that DD had sherbet lemons on his desk in the office scene is some sort of spoiler... book fans are well aware that sherbet lemons and lemon drops are his favorite candy; it's not like that fact is going to play any part whatsoever in Deathly Hallows. I'm simply pointing out that JKR must have noticed inclusions like that, which sometimes fail to appear in the movies.
And also, if you are refering to a spoiler in how I said the movie gave prominence to Harry and Dumbledore's relationship... THEY ARE NOT A COUPLE. I simply meant in a mentoring way :-D
If you do not want the film spoiled I will not tell you who dies, but obviously someone does. Really tho... the books are out. Most ppl know who I'm refering to. But aren't you worried watching the review will include a spoiler?
I completely agree. I read the books and you summed up the movie's ending perfectly...it was completely vapid and devoid of anything remotely resembling the book's great ending. One can only hope that the next movies redeem this one and find that same feeling that the previous Potter films gave us walking out of the theatre; intrigued and mystified by the fantastical world of Harry Potter. A very well done critique.
I don't understand why people dislike this movie so much, I guess it is pretty easy to be critical to these types of movies. In my opinion, it was pretty awesome and alot funnier than I expected.
Haven't seen the movie yet. Probably won't 'till it comes out on TV. All of my friends have told me its crap, even the ones that didn't read the book. The ones who did told me its even more crap. However, they say the scene with Dumbledore using that fire ring to kill the Inferi was so awesome, it almost compensates the whole film.
Fury I love ya but I think your totally slipping! You gave that piece of crap Transformers 2 a good review and sung it's praises. Yet you crapped all over this "FILM" that's way superior in every single way! Story, character, editing, acting, etc. By the way you felt that this film was too long, seriously! Wasn't T2 an exhausting 2 hours plus of loud nonsense! That said you have to look at this "FILM" as a bridge to the next and final chapter much like LOR two towers and Empire Strike back.
Great review! Haven't seen this and I doubt I will. I'm just not a fan of the HP series. I saw the first couple of movies and I figure if you've seen one, you've seen them all. *shrug*
For being one of if not the worst book of the series i thought they did a fair job with the movie. Again, it's hard to make a great movie out of a book that was nothing but filler in the series. i'd give it 7/10. Great review Fury please keep it up
There was much that was left out. I suppose if you only watch the movies it was another great one in the series. Having read the entire series I knew what was missing, however, I still thoroughly enjoyed the film. Great review! :)
Haha. 0:26 Just like Hitchcock!!

I'm going to have to disagree Fury, I loved this movie to death. To me its the best of the series. My favorite Harry Potter movies in order now are:
1. The Half-Blood Prince
2. The Prisoner Of Azkaban
3. The Order Of The Phoenix
4. The Goblet Of Fire
5. The Chamber Of Secrets
6. The Philosopher's Stone
But other than that good review man! 5/5
