  • Thanks... I needed this info for my Yugo M59.

  • Thanks for the video I will have to take my firing pin out and clean it and the bolt before firing thanks again.

  • Great video thanks for the insight. Question, would you recommend any sort of lubrication to be applied to the various internal parts i.e. the pin . spring before repeating the process backward to re-assemble? Thanks, shall await your reply in due course.

  • @BennyTheJett1 The danger of applying lubricant to the firing pin channel is that this will attract dirt, dust, carbon, etc build up and lead to a slam fire. It should function fine without any lubricant at all, however since it's bare steel it could be prone to rust as well. So depending on your environment (humidity, where you store your firearm) you may want to leave it dry or apply a VERY light oil as a rust preventative and make sure the pin remains free.

  • lol i pulled the pin out with a little wiggle and pull...

  • You mentioned that you should hear a rattle when you shake the bolt. I just purchased a Norinco SKS and disassembled it for the first time. When I shake the bolt, there's no rattle whatsoever: it feels like a solid hunk of metal. I don't have the means to disassemble the firing pin and all at the moment, but I was curious if this is a bad thing. Thanks.

  • @JasonRedfield This indicates that the firing pin channel is dirty and could lead to a slam fire. I would go to the hardware store and buy a cheap punch set and a hammer, and a block of wood and find a spot on the ground and clean it.

  • @elal757

Thanks! Try as I might, I simply could not manage to hammer out that retaining pin on the bolt assembly. However, I was still nervous about attempting to operate the weapon without doing something to clean it out. I ended up filling up a container with mineral spirits and dropping the bolt in there to let it soak for a while. Sure enough, after a few hours, the cosmoline came out and the pin could be heard rattling freely inside. Took it to the range next day without a hitch.

  • thank you so much for posting!!!!!!!! I have mine all disassembled, besides this one thing, and I was stuck. Good karma for you...

  • is there a punch in the cleaning kit that comes with the sks?

  • To help anyone else out a little more who are concerned with slam fires and want to clean the bolt out good, even better then a pipe cleaner I found that in one of my rifle kits, the brass wire brush and cleaning cloth to the .17HMR caliber fits PERFECTLY into the bolt hole from back to front, I scrubbed my gun out using that and it was good as new, and my mind rested as ease knowing that my gun shouldn't slam fire at all. I'm looking into a Murray firing pin replacement regardless.

  • Thanks for the refresher. To add to the slamfire question. Slamfires in the SKS will occur in SKS rifles that have been in storage for a long time coated in Cosmoline and not cleaning the firing pin completely before firing which is the reason I watched this video.

Best way to clean the bolt and other hard to clean parts of a rifle is boiling hot water poured through it. (Old Army trick my instructor taught me way back 40 years ago in boot camp.

  • Have you had any slam fire with it?

  • I put a yugo sks in layaway today. The rifle is $149. It said on tag it fired but would not eject the case. Also stated they tried fliping the gas block swith and still did not eject. Was wondering what the problem may be what steps you would take in making it function properly. Thanks

  • @adamsenig try to clean the gas chamber and the operation rod,,,got to work,,besides this do not know what else,,

  • Comment removed

  • After you do this, do you need to headspace it?

  • @ELITEHAMSTER123

    No.

Headspace is affected by how the bolt locks in, and how the cartridge interfaces with the bolt and chamber. This is simply the removal of the firing pin and extractor.

  • He said all sks firing pins are pretty much the same. I read an article that grouped them into 2 or 3 types. It said some types may cause slamfires if intalled in the rifle they weren't designed for. Might be nothing but you should research before you replace one. Nothing like a runaway gun to ruin your fun outing.

  • @TheRadar77

There ARE different firing pins, and the point i was attempting to convey was that while there are minor variations without interchangability, the CONSTRUCTION of sks bolts is very similar, and this video should help you regardless of your flavor of SKS.

  • Good to know 5 *****

  • alex .. if you can't take it apart just BOIL the entire bolt in water, or soak in a solvent. don't really lubricate the bolt. i rub a small amount of gun oil on the outside and wipe it off to keep the rust away. oils and grease attract dirt and Could possibly gunk up the firing pin. it should rattle nice and freely .. **CLINKY CLINKY**

  • I'm glad I saw this. My "new" sks firing pin does not rattle.

  • thanks man that was a really helpful video.

  • I just got a russian sks and I have tried like crazy to take apart the bolt but the damn retaining pin won't budge. I'll use a pin and a hammer just like as shown here and the son of a bitch just won't move.

The reason why I want to take apart the bolt is to examine it to make sure there is no gunk in there that will jam up the firing pin.

any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

  • same thing for my tula '52

  • Alexn1067 , I had to use a 3 lb hammer and went thru 3 punches to get mine out. Also had to heat with a heat gun. Try to heat around the retaining pin, not the pin, then WAIL on it. Be careful to keep the extractor pin from flying out and getting lost. Its much easier after the first time. Also you can try soaking the whole bolt assembly in some penetrating oil after heating. Good luck

  • Even if my previous advice is wrong (the bolt still wont blow back far enough even after removing the oprod spring) still I'd try getting new/chopping off and stretching the current oprod spring. Also make sure the gas tube is clean. Hope this helped.

    Beleg

  • ATTENTION ALL! if your SKS does not blow back the bolt and bolt carrier far enough to chamber a new round try the following:

    1) remove the oprod spring rear of the gas tube

    2) replace the oprod without the spring and reassemble the gun

    3) load and fire your SKS with at least 2 rounds and see if it will cycle at least one time

if it cycles the first time then most likely your oprod spring is too strong. get a new one or simply get part of it chopped off and stretched to the original limit.

  • my firing pin is stuck i removed the extractor first did i do it wrong the malfunction started with a piece of a primer shearing off and lodging between the firing pin and the hole it slides through so i began disassembly and could not remove the pin i need advice

  • a super video, thanks for helping us newbies out. i really appreciate it!!!!

  • Hey.. looking for advice on my Yugo SKS. Problem---> I purchased a 20 round magazine & took off the old 10 round mag. Now everytime I shoot the SKS it doesn't LOAD a new round. The bolt doesn't go back enough to chamber a NEW ROUND. I tried 3 different types of ammo, put teh old 10 round back on, & disasembled the SKS & the same thing. I have to pull the bolt back everytime to load a round.

ANYONE help me on this or have some ADVICE?

    Greatly appreciate it.

    thank U

  • Ok, look. Is your SKS a standard model with an integrated magazine, or does it have a detachable magazine?

You say the bolt ( I assume you mean the entire bolt-carrier assembly) doesn't go back far enough to chamber a new round. What are you talking about?

Do you mean it doesn't cycle back at all, or just doesn't cycle far enough to eject the spent round and pick up a new one?

If the problem is with your bolt-carrier assembly, then you should start looking at the gas-system and recoil spring

  • U C, I buy something cheap its not dependable. i cleaned the entire SKS up to the GAS system. I will shoot it in the back yard tomorrow to test it out & C if it works. If it doesn't work I'll label this YUGO SKS a a piece of JUNK & wasted $180. I should have added $300 more and bought another BROWNING or REMINGTON bolt action rifle. Test the waepon in the field, take your MOSIN hunting & C if U come bring home the GAME or bacon.

  • So in short, because you know nothing about your rifle, and can't even understand what's wrong with it, you immediately say it's a crappy rifle? That's pathetic.

Nevermind all the other owners of SKSs that use them just fine. Nevermind that Vietnam won entire wars with nothing but that rifle.

You really just have a disgusting outlook. "Oh look, I'm too ignorant to deal with this rifle, so it must suck!"

    Go to hell.

  • COST is important when purchasing a weapon. I tell that to sportsmen & women all the time. BUY a NAME BRAND because U could need it someday to protect U & your family. ==>COLT, S&W, GLOCK, Winchester, BROWNING, or REMIGNTON, u cant go wrong

  • No, that just makes you a Fanboy.

  • Did you make sure the gas regulator switch thingy is not in the "single" position? its on the gas tube area...if it is in a certain position the SKS will only fire in the single mode....you hafta rack a new round each time (this is for launching nades)...also some models actually have the "single" mode switch near the trigger...flipping it in a certain position will cause the gun to not cycle after each shot

  • Ya' learn something everyday!

  • nice vid!

  • Hell ya thank you!!!

  • Thanks for the vid that's all i needed to know for the completion of the cosmoline removal! Thanks a bunch, much appreciated and thanks for looking out for us gun owners!

  • Nice vid, thanks alot.Looks like you really have to pound the hell out of that thing.

  • Thanks for that vid I was

    wondering if that retaining pin

    was a press fit.All I knew was

it was'nt comming out without some

    force.
