I'm looking for the Smarties commercial from the early 80's where there were three girls singing in front of a bandstand or orchestra of some sort and their was a little boy in it too. It was so long ago that the only details i remember is that they were wearing bright skirts with sashes around their waists. I found it entertaining as a kid.
@blfdproductions No, Smarties existed long before. M&Ms were invented later and were advertised with the claim they "melt in your mouth, not in your hands"... as Smarties notoriously left a rainbow of colours in your hands as you shovelled them into your mouth :-)
@hensca "They melt in your mouth, not in your hand" wasn't the advertising slogan for smarties, it was the ad slogan for Peanut Treets. Before Peanut Treets emerged there were only chocolate covered peanuts which melted in your hand as soon as you picked them up. The Treets commercial used to say, "Treets-Melt in your mouth-not in your hand" as a white gloved hand opened to reveal a cluster of Peanut Treets. Peanut Treets disapeared when peanut M&M's emerged. The M&M's were of course inferior.
I don't eat the red ones at all because they're made with cochineal :) ie crushed beetle ovaries.
And they're not knock-off anything. They're from the UK where M&Ms were not available until I believe the 1990s. These were made by Rowntree, now they're made by Nestle. Rowntree was the best!
Are they here, in the states? Do they have a different name? One of my Canadian friends is telling me to try them. Apparently what I thought she was talking about are really "rockets" haha
@SkyStealer17 Nope, they're purely Canadian. And funny you mentioned the rockets thing, because when I was visiting the States I heard the same story!
@SpookyHelder Actually, they were first made in Britain and brought over, then made here by Rowntree, now by Nestle which owns pretty much everything. As for M&Ms, they were in fact Smarties brought over to the US under license and re-named. No one remembers now, as I think it's Mars that owns M&Ms, that they were once one and the same candy!
@LittelMissCuty1 No, every Canadian kid will tell you they ate the red ones first or last... long before the first version of this commercial turned up in the 70s.
Every source on the 'net claims that these were never marketed in the US. However, I clearly remember buying them in stores (not specialty stores, normal ones) AND seeing this commercial on TV all the time. The song in particular is one that I never seem to forget.
That was neat. I don't remember smarties. The only smarties candy I know is the ones that are like round pez candy & in a long, clear plastic wrapper.
