  • I loved this show!! Can't believe I remembered the lyrics!!!!

  • Red Symons wrote a song for this TV show....Trying to find it..

  • wasnt she in bettlejuice.. lol

  • Ah, to have shares in a saxophone company in the 80s...

  • It was David Reyne.

  • I have heard this song before but never seen the video. Who is the blonde lady in the video? I never heard of the TV series either.

  • Oh the 80's, back when you could go out of a Friday night, get blind rotten drunk with your mates and not be worried about a knife in the back, or a bottle smashed over your head, or any of the other 1000 things that make it not worthwhile anymore. Wish it never ended.

  • This is just gold. You couldn't make this stuff up today. Great then, great now.

  • OMG the pastels.... we didn't need drugs in the 80s, the colour schemes were enough to give a high =]

  • It's a young Pauline Hanson!!!!!!!

  • I've never seen or heard of this before. Just shows how remote the bush was in 1984. I was living in Alice Springs at the time this went to air (according to the description given by the uploader) and only had infrequent access to the one TV station available there in those days.

  • @MrGoblin60 - I lived in Alice Springs at the time too. I remember seeing the show intermittently. I also remember finding out later that Deborah Conway was the real voice in these songs.

  • @AtroGirl - Oopsy...and "I was devastated it wasn't her real voice"....

  • @AtroGirl Thanks for that. I guess I was often out bush and busy with work and other stuff. Interesting to note that the program was actually viewable in the Alice at the time. 1984-1985 was the first time I lived in the Centre and what a wonderful time it was for me too, loved the place. Went back there to live and raise the kids from '96-08. Unfortunately, by the time we left, the town wasn't such a good place to be. I hope it gets back to its former self.

  • 0:37 Is that a young David or James Reyne?

  • @SpivWiggins -David Reyne.

  • great old tune

    was a great show also

    deborah conway sung it

  • wow so music sucked back then too........

  • Ah, I wish the ABC could bring this series out on DVD for us to watch again!

  • @politas

i suppose you want sesame street to be issued as a re-release to for your viewing pleasure, huh???? oh what about humphrey bear on DVD... interested???

  • '84 was my senior year too but I was only 16(good title for a song?) sure does bring back memories.....back to therapy for me LMAO! j/k cheers for finding this

  • She played deaf rough nut Georgie Baxter in Prisoner in 1981 and looked shocking in that, although I think the producers deliberately made he look ugly for the part.

  • One of the best when I was young 54 now countdown lives

  • I used to watch this show. I was 17 and it was the year I left high school. Soooo fukken eighties. I had shoulder pads in my tee shirts ;-).

  • pauline hanson?

  • A skinny David reyne, think he hit the corporates lately and been in a good paddock!

  • The hairstyle worn by Tracey Mann here was so trendy at the time. I'm a guy but really wanted that hair do. I lie - I actually had it.

  • Daniel Abineri played the leader of a rival band. I think Mann's character had a brief firery romance with him too. She inadvertently plagiarised his song having overheard him humming it in a cafe where she waited tables. His song "Psychosis" became her "No Focus". I think Jane Clifton played a pretension art patron who fancied Martin.

  • Excuse me guys while I crack open an Island Cooler

  • @clockoff1430 Legend! (Who actually drinks that now days?)

  • @gaijininja I think all those, well.. the old 'spritzers'.. have been moved over by Jagerbombs instead, and the good old Depth Charges of the early ninteys.. Mate!! Sad really, the old spritzers... they were a great diuretic.

  • Respond to this video... 80's fassion, some look back and go "What the...???", but personally, I think the girls were hot back then.

  • @gaijininja Couldn't agree more.

  • @gaijininja there was certainly something wild and untamed about them..women who roar instead of being kittens.

  • @clockoff1430 Love it memories flood back

  • Can this clip be anymore 80s!?!? haha

  • @PetShopMod Nope, which is what makes it great. :-)

  • Can this clip be anymore 80s!?!? haha

  • I think its actually Deb Conway singing this.

  • @retrostuff1

Yes your bang on it was Deb Conway.

  • David Reyne on guitar beats David n Kim ch 10..."Over to you Rozz and the Ab Trainers"

  • faaark that took me back a loong way lol

  • I'd like to see It's a Game with David Reyne doing lead vocals

  • not bad i remember the tv show and her dropping the billiard ball on the guys nuts, but that reyne brother what a dick

  • Isn't the saxophone player in the Foo Fighters film clip Big Me.

  • lol looks like Pauline Hanson, its a perfect example of 80s colour if nothing else, great vid, too bad the song isnt as inspirational really.

  • way way way 80s

  • anyone have the acual shows I would love to show my grown kid what mummy use to do and look like .

  • WHO WOULD THINK ALMOST 30 YEARS WOULD FLY BY SO QUICK.STILL REMEMBER WATCHIN THIS ON THE ABC CHANNEL.

  • OMG those clothes ....look so great!! those colors...very nice video/song and pretty girls...a perfect example for the eighties!

    thanks!!

  • They really where a brilliant parody of about a million new wave pop bands of the time. This could be Electric Pandas, The Tribe, QED, Eurogliders, The Dugites, Flaming Hands...you name it.

Great wardrobe. I can smell the hair gel.

I remember David Reyne had a band around that time called "Cats Under Pressure"

  • IT WASNT REALLY THAT LONG AGO WAS IT?

  • @ANDYL7770 didnt feel to old, till i read your comment, did the math and then realised,,, yikes.. almost 30 yrs allready!

  • I have the soundtrack on vinyl.....the late and great DAVID MCCOMB even wrote a couple of songs for this soundtrack - not this one tho.

  • Is that pauline Hanson in the 1980's. Should be being called "The takeaways"?

  • brilliant!

  • It doesn't get any more 80's than this.

  • I own the original album on vinyl. Loved the show at the time

  • also have heard rumours that a dvd release is imminent god i hope the rumour is correct start hasseling the abc to pressure them for a dvd release email write whatever lets get this show back either a rebroadcast or dvd release yes it screams 80's but for those of us who were part of that decade and i was this was the cream on top of the milk so to speak!

  • abc has re released the soundtrack both volumes are now available on the one cd am buying asap loved this show and music and yep i too want it out on dvd could someone rip this to frostwire which is the new limewire wish wish wish one of the oz tv channels would rebroadcast with video hits being axed would b perfect for tens sat morn lineup also love jo kennedy's body and soul from the aussie film starstruck!

  • The guy that is the drummer is just SOOOOOOO un-coordinated

  • Omg! I loved the show & this song, I had no idea Deborah Conway sang it!

  • Like the POSTER CHILD of the 80's. LMAO

  • Woz it really '84??????? REALLY?

  • Always like this song, but didn't know Deborah Conway sung it or Sharon O'Neill wrote it til I read it here. I love both of those artists ... they were both brilliant, so no wonder this song is so good.! ... Wayne

  • wow very nice

  • Talk about walking back through history. I remember this TV series starring Tracey Mann, David Reyne, Sandy Lillingston and the guy that went on to host Play School. It had many Cameos including Red Simons and Molly. Some great music written by Sharon O'Neil I think. Thanks for putting up on the Tube. There was even a Duran Duran joke I'm sure!

  • @pdb606 Jane Clifton and Daniel Abineri also made appearances in the series.

  • @zaniac100 Ah yes - thanks zaniac. I'd forgotten. Am I correct in thinking that Daniel played a role as lead singer of another band called the Lions? Was his chacater called Leo? I can't recall which role Jane played - All I know is that she has a beautiful voice. Anyone who's heard Taxi Mary would know that.

  • Before David Reyne was just a tool on a travel show, he WAS hot once lol

  • All I remember of this series is the part where they spontaneously decide the bands name, based on the takeaway food lying around. Or something like that. And this song. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

  • The rumour is that Debra Conway sang the vocals for this song, and Traci Mann lip-synched. However, a good song nonetheless. 2 thumbs up. the series sucked nuts forget the TV series just enjoy the song.

  • @FOX9746 it's not a rumour, it was Deb Conway

  • Loved it then, love it now. Awesome clip, reminds me so much of 80's asthetics too.

  • It was a REALLY BAD TV Show. REALLY BAD.

  • Pink seems to flair on camera.

  • This one is penned by Sharon O'Neill, who did a way SUPERIOR version (IMHO) on her 1987 "Danced In The Fire" solo album (retitled as "In Control")

  • God! This was the highlight of my tv viewing in the 80s!!!! And, shut up, Nzoz: think Monkees, you dag.

  • Loved watching this in the early 80's.

  • The reason that nobody has posted any of the series is because it was really crappy!

  • Nostalgia just punched me in the back of the head... I sincerely and dearly miss these days of the 80's, no care, no respnsibility, no aches and pains... this is a great soundtrack album, get a copy and feel good for a while...

  • Ahhhh so 80's... miss those carefree days... use to watch this show often...

  • I knew that sounded like Debra Conway!!

  • takes me back to a car trip to grandma's circa '82. canberra to wagga wagga. my little sisters and i loved this song and the series. on cassette it was.

    great show, great song.

here's to tracy mann, and debra conway (and arkie and the reyne boy, not the drawling one from aussie crawl, and the other cute girl who's name i cannot recall.)

yes, i was born in 1970.

  • cool!

    good song!

i never heard this band before!! they're so 80's!

  • Wow! What a flashback! I haven't heard this since back then!

  • The weird thing about this song is it came out on an album back in 1984 aptly named the best of 1984 yet it was listed under the name Sweet and Sour by the Take Aways, a ficticisous band with a song on an album which sold in retail, but it was sung by Debra Conway. Would this mean Debra wasn't to recieve royalties for the song? or did the marketing company pull a swifty here, got me thinking

  • Man me and my sister never missed an ep of this show loved it, and this song is still awsome

  • As far as s***house television shows went in the 80s, this was a breath of fresh air...and Tracy Mann was hot and you could still understand David Reyne when he spoke...

  • Tracey Mann was so hot.

  • I love this song!! I have it on vinyl...thanks for putting the video up x

  • @foralletemity Can I borrow the sweet and sour album of you?

  • @speebyda where are you from? let me know your email addie...we'll talk.

  • @foralletemity I don't have a turntable, and as much as I like the album I can't afford to buy one either, back to study at TAFE. It was mostly a joke, but thank you all the same.

  • oops i remember this

  • used to love this song.....great memories....

  • Lovely track.

    Sounds like the Eurogliders.

The guy with the guitar isn't he a TV presenter now?

  • Tracey Mann played the lead singer in the TakeAways, later starred in the Australian Mini Series Cyclone Tracy with a very young pre Home and Away, Kate Ritchie. Just some useless information I thought I would share with you.

  • @Prime4571 Ten years before this Tracey Mann got her big break playing the only innocent girl on 'sex' soap opera 'The Box'.

  • The song "Sweet & Sour" performed by Deb Conway for the show is actually "In Control" written and performed by Sharon O'Neill on her "Danced in the Fire' album (which I have (which is bloody brilliant!)). NZOZ has probably already said this, but I can't be buggered paging back to look.

  • If you're ever invited to an 80s party, this clip could provide good costume ideas!

  • hah! David Reyne ~ Jame's brother! love this

  • I used to LOVE this show....I think either my sister or I have the cassette somewhere!!!

  • My god this has brough bas so many wonderful memories. Can't find the record anywhere, but I will keep on looking

  • @doctor6060 You can now buy the full takeaways cd from abc online shop - $35 inc postage AND the tv series is going to be released on DVD next year apparently !!!!!!!! There is facebook page dedicated to teh takeaways and that is how i found out about the disc-i've literally just bought it ! feel like i'm a little kid again i am so excited lol

  • I remember this, I have been trying to remember the name of the show for soooo long. I loved this show.....:)

  • Wow this is something I have not seen or heard in what must be close to 20+ years. I can still remember every single word even after all that time lol, I guess it shows you what kind of impact music has on a kid growing up :)

    Thanks for posting this nzoz1984

  • I LOVED THIS SHOW

    THANKS FOR POSTING

  • Totally loved this show and the music. Memories!!!!

  • wasn't a bad sort Tracey Mann

  • I must say I had never heard of the show or this song, not sure how I missed it. Heard the song on the radio this morning and I just had to investigate. This is simply brilliant! Nothing tops Aussie music from the 80s.

  • I absolutely loved this - the music, the show - I had the tape and listened to it over and over......

    Thank for the memories!

  • @sugarrayofsunshine I remember watching the show on the abc, i must have been 16, and sweet &sour is on the 1984 "the music" various artists album, i still have mine!, fantastic song, great clothes and mullets!, i miss those days!!, i lved in oz between '81&'86, loads of great oz&nz bands from that time, im back in uk and still play all stuff by inxs, oils, chisel, oz crawl, ect... if only i could go back in time!!!

  • talk about memories....well done nzoz!!

  • i dont care if it was or wasnt a real band mate, i love this song! gimme a thumbs up if u agree =D

  • @123perrin Actually the fact that it was a TV theme makes it all the better when you consider TV themes never sound as good as this song did, particularly for the time.

  • i watched this show religiously even had the vinyl was one of my first fav teen music shows i am so grateful u posted this thanks a mill brings back awesome memories top job for finding it

  • i had the soundtrack to this show on cassette, i wore it out playing it to much and i can't find it anywhere, thankyou so much for posting

  • OMG how young does David Reyne look!

  • @dragonlady1970 he looks a lot like James there doesn't he, I almost got the two confused before I read nzoz's description

  • I notice some of the best songs come from the most unusual circumstances, in this case a song from a ficticious band with the singer miming whilst the real singer is a famous singer, namely Debra Conway.

This takes me way back when I first heard this song on cassette back in 1984, I wore the casstte out after playing it over a hundred times, some songs you just can't let go, especially when memories are attached to them.Thx for posting this vid.

    Cheers

  • nice hair :)

  • @treasured17 LOL don't knock the mullet, I had one when I was a kid! :)

  • This is supposed to be due for DVD release

  • Yah -> I LOVED this song when it came out and never forgot it. So glad to find it again....and yesss...it still means so much!!! "I am in control!"...LOVE IT :) !!!

  • Deborah Conway did the lead vocals for Tracy Mann... = )

  • I saw Tracy Mann on Chapel St Prahran 2 years ago & I gotta tell you she's lookin good for her age.

  • I bought the album after watching the tv show in the 80's. I think this was were I developed my thing for red headed women.

  • Comment removed

  • nice one i loved this series growing up as a teenager, great to see a bit of it again, bring back the 80's i say!!

  • Where is Sandy Lillington now?

  • Will somebody PLEASE bring back the 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks NZOZ you are the bomb my man!

Now I feel like getting out the fluro wristbands and my Choose Life t-shirt!!!!

    :0)

  • I remember this song from the 80's and has been one of my favourites. It has a message for people who have the cursed illness depression, or just needing confidence in themselves. What's it matter how the video was made, it's sung beautifully and gets the message across.

  • Great to see this :-) I put it on Limewire a couple of years ago.... because nobody else had. But this is heaps better .

  • thanks nzoz for sharing!

  • wow man, I'd beyond totally forgotten about this tune, and the show!! hahahahahaha God I hate gettin old!

    thanks NZ again.

  • hey nzoz i miss the 80s get the bloody time machine invented lol.

  • It's a REAL SHAME that this series was never released on DVD. I'm sure thousands would love to see this show again. Well I know i would.

  • dang, this video totally screams the 80s. great song!

  • Come on AC - release the series on DVD - PLEASE!

  • I remember this tv show, a classic from the ABC.

  • David Reyne... PMSL.

  • I met - oh gee - Sandra?? The sax player - She was just gorgeous and so happy to be remembered - This show rocked when I was a kid. Tracey Mann did a good job at lip sync - ahh good memories - thanks nzoz awesome stuff

  • One of Deborah Conway's best songs for sure.

  • Another classic example of 80's sax.

  • Gorgeous! I so had the hots for Tracey Mann! And Deb Conway's voice just makes this even sexier! I too would peddle the deadly tredly back home quick-smart to watch The Takeways. Hell, I wanted to be them!

  • i love at 1:56 how tracey mann just casually walks by someone doing crazy gymnastics and she doesn't even bat an eyelid! gold!

  • my god

  • yay, used to rush home to watch this on aunty : ) remember when the band manager (was it arky michaels?) spent all the food money on dog food cos it was on special, cept they didn't have a dog - why do i even remember that lol

  • LOL @ david reyne! Havn't seen that clip on the morning show!

I was 14 when this was on tv and I had it bad for Tracy Mann.

  • I still love Tracy Mann... the 80's version...

  • Debra Conway on vocals you cant go wrong, pure 80s and i love it [Tracy Mann lip syncing.]

  • wow doesn't get more 80s than this

  • Fark Yehhh !! Been lookin round for this track for AGES!!

  • The epitome of 80's velveeta!

  • Wow, I used to love this show and still think of little bits from it every now and again. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • What a great clip to post.

So many memories of this show.

    Thanks!

  • I was 9yrs old when I saw this series and i loved it. I remember having the cassette and listening to it over and over. I t would be awesome to see the actual series.

  • I wish the ABC would release Sweet and Sour on Dvd, all I have is taped from the tele, VHS tapes.

I also wish the ABC would re-release the soundtracks on CD.

  • Mate - load it up here on youtube - there are so many who'd love to see it again, even if it is a crappy VHS copy!

  • If you think this is a real band, the joke is on you...

As explained in my description, this was a fictional band based on a TV show called 'Sweet & Sour'.... And I think calling them (the actors) ugly is a bit harsh and uncalled for.

  • @nzoz1984 They're not ugly, though I'm only thinking of the chicks, the sax player is real cute but we don't see enough of her except at 0:44

  • @nzoz1984 - Tracy Mann was not ugly.... No siree...

  • @piginasack She'd be 53 this year and she probably still looks great :)

  • Comment removed

  • @piginasack I was on this show lol

  • @piginasack Nothing wrong with Tracy Mann, she was also in the Mini Series Cyclone Tracy and playing Connie. (released 1986)

  • I really hope time does forgive and takes mistakes into the bargain. Thank God there are some of us who find family photos embarrassing enough. Like age Vanity will have the last laugh.

  • Loved this show - and song! I have the album too. Go David Reyne! HA.

  • I remember the series , I was in high school, has anyone got a copy of the series, please let me know.

    Cheers

  • OMG I remember this. I've the bloody record. Wonder how I'll get if I sold it on Ebay? LMAO knowing my fucking luck, fifty bloody cents or lucky that LMFAO

  • Don't sell it!

  • LOL. Yeah yeah yeah okay I won't sell it...maybe in fifty years time I'll sell it for ten cents LMAO

  • if you have it on vinyl as i do ( danced in the fire ) it's worth keeping but if you can find it on cd then you'll hear the sounds a lot better. A bloody fantastic album

  • I thinks its Debra Conway singing not sharon o'neil ???
