Oh the 80's, back when you could go out of a Friday night, get blind rotten drunk with your mates and not be worried about a knife in the back, or a bottle smashed over your head, or any of the other 1000 things that make it not worthwhile anymore. Wish it never ended.
I've never seen or heard of this before. Just shows how remote the bush was in 1984. I was living in Alice Springs at the time this went to air (according to the description given by the uploader) and only had infrequent access to the one TV station available there in those days.
@MrGoblin60 - I lived in Alice Springs at the time too. I remember seeing the show intermittently. I also remember finding out later that Deborah Conway was the real voice in these songs.
@AtroGirl Thanks for that. I guess I was often out bush and busy with work and other stuff. Interesting to note that the program was actually viewable in the Alice at the time. 1984-1985 was the first time I lived in the Centre and what a wonderful time it was for me too, loved the place. Went back there to live and raise the kids from '96-08. Unfortunately, by the time we left, the town wasn't such a good place to be. I hope it gets back to its former self.
i suppose you want sesame street to be issued as a re-release to for your viewing pleasure, huh???? oh what about humphrey bear on DVD... interested???

She played deaf rough nut Georgie Baxter in Prisoner in 1981 and looked shocking in that, although I think the producers deliberately made he look ugly for the part.
Daniel Abineri played the leader of a rival band. I think Mann's character had a brief firery romance with him too. She inadvertently plagiarised his song having overheard him humming it in a cafe where she waited tables. His song "Psychosis" became her "No Focus". I think Jane Clifton played a pretension art patron who fancied Martin.
@gaijininja I think all those, well.. the old 'spritzers'.. have been moved over by Jagerbombs instead, and the good old Depth Charges of the early ninteys.. Mate!! Sad really, the old spritzers... they were a great diuretic.
They really where a brilliant parody of about a million new wave pop bands of the time. This could be Electric Pandas, The Tribe, QED, Eurogliders, The Dugites, Flaming Hands...you name it.
Great wardrobe. I can smell the hair gel.
I remember David Reyne had a band around that time called "Cats Under Pressure"
also have heard rumours that a dvd release is imminent god i hope the rumour is correct start hasseling the abc to pressure them for a dvd release email write whatever lets get this show back either a rebroadcast or dvd release yes it screams 80's but for those of us who were part of that decade and i was this was the cream on top of the milk so to speak!
abc has re released the soundtrack both volumes are now available on the one cd am buying asap loved this show and music and yep i too want it out on dvd could someone rip this to frostwire which is the new limewire wish wish wish one of the oz tv channels would rebroadcast with video hits being axed would b perfect for tens sat morn lineup also love jo kennedy's body and soul from the aussie film starstruck!
Always like this song, but didn't know Deborah Conway sung it or Sharon O'Neill wrote it til I read it here. I love both of those artists ... they were both brilliant, so no wonder this song is so good.! ... Wayne
Talk about walking back through history. I remember this TV series starring Tracey Mann, David Reyne, Sandy Lillingston and the guy that went on to host Play School. It had many Cameos including Red Simons and Molly. Some great music written by Sharon O'Neil I think. Thanks for putting up on the Tube. There was even a Duran Duran joke I'm sure!
@zaniac100 Ah yes - thanks zaniac. I'd forgotten. Am I correct in thinking that Daniel played a role as lead singer of another band called the Lions? Was his chacater called Leo? I can't recall which role Jane played - All I know is that she has a beautiful voice. Anyone who's heard Taxi Mary would know that.
All I remember of this series is the part where they spontaneously decide the bands name, based on the takeaway food lying around. Or something like that. And this song. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
The rumour is that Debra Conway sang the vocals for this song, and Traci Mann lip-synched. However, a good song nonetheless. 2 thumbs up. the series sucked nuts forget the TV series just enjoy the song.
Nostalgia just punched me in the back of the head... I sincerely and dearly miss these days of the 80's, no care, no respnsibility, no aches and pains... this is a great soundtrack album, get a copy and feel good for a while...
takes me back to a car trip to grandma's circa '82. canberra to wagga wagga. my little sisters and i loved this song and the series. on cassette it was.
great show, great song.
here's to tracy mann, and debra conway (and arkie and the reyne boy, not the drawling one from aussie crawl, and the other cute girl who's name i cannot recall.)
The weird thing about this song is it came out on an album back in 1984 aptly named the best of 1984 yet it was listed under the name Sweet and Sour by the Take Aways, a ficticisous band with a song on an album which sold in retail, but it was sung by Debra Conway. Would this mean Debra wasn't to recieve royalties for the song? or did the marketing company pull a swifty here, got me thinking
As far as s***house television shows went in the 80s, this was a breath of fresh air...and Tracy Mann was hot and you could still understand David Reyne when he spoke...
@foralletemity I don't have a turntable, and as much as I like the album I can't afford to buy one either, back to study at TAFE. It was mostly a joke, but thank you all the same.
Tracey Mann played the lead singer in the TakeAways, later starred in the Australian Mini Series Cyclone Tracy with a very young pre Home and Away, Kate Ritchie. Just some useless information I thought I would share with you.
The song "Sweet & Sour" performed by Deb Conway for the show is actually "In Control" written and performed by Sharon O'Neill on her "Danced in the Fire' album (which I have (which is bloody brilliant!)). NZOZ has probably already said this, but I can't be buggered paging back to look.
@doctor6060 You can now buy the full takeaways cd from abc online shop - $35 inc postage AND the tv series is going to be released on DVD next year apparently !!!!!!!! There is facebook page dedicated to teh takeaways and that is how i found out about the disc-i've literally just bought it ! feel like i'm a little kid again i am so excited lol
Wow this is something I have not seen or heard in what must be close to 20+ years. I can still remember every single word even after all that time lol, I guess it shows you what kind of impact music has on a kid growing up :)
I must say I had never heard of the show or this song, not sure how I missed it. Heard the song on the radio this morning and I just had to investigate. This is simply brilliant! Nothing tops Aussie music from the 80s.
@sugarrayofsunshine I remember watching the show on the abc, i must have been 16, and sweet &sour is on the 1984 "the music" various artists album, i still have mine!, fantastic song, great clothes and mullets!, i miss those days!!, i lved in oz between '81&'86, loads of great oz&nz bands from that time, im back in uk and still play all stuff by inxs, oils, chisel, oz crawl, ect... if only i could go back in time!!!
@123perrin Actually the fact that it was a TV theme makes it all the better when you consider TV themes never sound as good as this song did, particularly for the time.
i watched this show religiously even had the vinyl was one of my first fav teen music shows i am so grateful u posted this thanks a mill brings back awesome memories top job for finding it
I notice some of the best songs come from the most unusual circumstances, in this case a song from a ficticious band with the singer miming whilst the real singer is a famous singer, namely Debra Conway.
This takes me way back when I first heard this song on cassette back in 1984, I wore the casstte out after playing it over a hundred times, some songs you just can't let go, especially when memories are attached to them.Thx for posting this vid.
Yah -> I LOVED this song when it came out and never forgot it. So glad to find it again....and yesss...it still means so much!!! "I am in control!"...LOVE IT :) !!!
I remember this song from the 80's and has been one of my favourites. It has a message for people who have the cursed illness depression, or just needing confidence in themselves. What's it matter how the video was made, it's sung beautifully and gets the message across.
I met - oh gee - Sandra?? The sax player - She was just gorgeous and so happy to be remembered - This show rocked when I was a kid. Tracey Mann did a good job at lip sync - ahh good memories - thanks nzoz awesome stuff
Gorgeous! I so had the hots for Tracey Mann! And Deb Conway's voice just makes this even sexier! I too would peddle the deadly tredly back home quick-smart to watch The Takeways. Hell, I wanted to be them!
yay, used to rush home to watch this on aunty : ) remember when the band manager (was it arky michaels?) spent all the food money on dog food cos it was on special, cept they didn't have a dog - why do i even remember that lol
I was 9yrs old when I saw this series and i loved it. I remember having the cassette and listening to it over and over. I t would be awesome to see the actual series.
If you think this is a real band, the joke is on you...
As explained in my description, this was a fictional band based on a TV show called 'Sweet & Sour'.... And I think calling them (the actors) ugly is a bit harsh and uncalled for.
I really hope time does forgive and takes mistakes into the bargain. Thank God there are some of us who find family photos embarrassing enough. Like age Vanity will have the last laugh.
OMG I remember this. I've the bloody record. Wonder how I'll get if I sold it on Ebay? LMAO knowing my fucking luck, fifty bloody cents or lucky that LMFAO
if you have it on vinyl as i do ( danced in the fire ) it's worth keeping but if you can find it on cd then you'll hear the sounds a lot better. A bloody fantastic album
I loved this show!! Can't believe I remembered the lyrics!!!!

I remember this song from the 80's and has been one of my favourites. It has a message for people who have the cursed illness depression, or just needing confidence in themselves. What's it matter how the video was made, it's sung beautifully and gets the message across.

I wish the ABC would release Sweet and Sour on Dvd, all I have is taped from the tele, VHS tapes.
I also wish the ABC would re-release the soundtracks on CD.

Mate - load it up here on youtube - there are so many who'd love to see it again, even if it is a crappy VHS copy!

I meant Narcissus. LOL. Did they have any notion of self outside of being an ugly and less creative AHA?
johnanthonyp 2 years ago
If you think this is a real band, the joke is on you...
As explained in my description, this was a fictional band based on a TV show called 'Sweet & Sour'.... And I think calling them (the actors) ugly is a bit harsh and uncalled for.
nzoz1984 2 years ago 20
@nzoz1984 They're not ugly, though I'm only thinking of the chicks, the sax player is real cute but we don't see enough of her except at 0:44
chrisnoaro1 1 year ago
@nzoz1984 - Tracy Mann was not ugly.... No siree...

@taipan185 If you're talking about Tracy Mann, she retired from acting in 1994 and is now a practising Buddhist

I really hope time does forgive and takes mistakes into the bargain. Thank God there are some of us who find family photos embarrassing enough. Like age Vanity will have the last laugh.
