I get how to play the modes now, but not WHEN. .I don't quite get when to use which modes, i.e. is the mixolydian for only flatted 7 chords, and is it ok to use in I7, IV7, V7 or all the above? Is Dorian only for a minor IV, or any minor, or any IV chord? I hate to ask for more since you give so much for free already, but can you help me get this? thanks
@johnhguitar Hi John.. thank you for the on-line lessons and will have a look at the book you mentioned too. Can I ask a question regarding playing C major scale over the Cmajor chords? Do you change the root note of the C Major Scale for it to 'properly' sound like a mode over the Chord. So Am chord, you play Aolian mode, (scale of C Major) but you should start it on the A note? Or is it all of a muchness and just follow your ears?
Thanks for the comment. I have a book coming out by the Hal Leonard Publishing Co. It is loaded with modern exercises for different styles. It should be out by 2010...
This is why so many solos in rock songs sound boring/redundant. No knowledge of music theory. Nice video

A MIXOLYDIAN it's the same if we are playing D major scale mixed with C pentatonic or A minor pentatonic,to give it a jazzero.

In the beginning I always explain it this way;
Over the chords Cmaj, Dmin, Emin, Fmaj, Gmaj, Amin,
Bminb5, the C Major scale will sound good. Get ust to hearing the scale over those chords and the rest will fall into place.

To technically describe the scale you'd start on the A but you know the notes are A B C D E F G and the same ass in C major.
