My roommate had a set up allot like yours in the video, and he did the exact same thing to his own tree farm simply because he was bored. I think I was laughing for a good three minutes about it... Probably because he was laughing madly while his home grown forest burned to cinders. =p

Aw man! I never thought of growing trees in dirt placed on top of trees! Are the torches there to prevent monsters spawning, or are they to keep the trees from dying?

the torches are to prevent monster spawns. trees only need light when grown - though they need 5x5 of full sunlight at that point.

@Malikat42 Naw, you can grow trees with a torch at night or in a cave! You should have only lit one fire and at the base of one tree instead of the tops!
