what does an afterburner do actually??

an afterburner is an entirely different fuel injector in the exhaust cylinder and reduction cone. It puts more fuel into this cylinder and the fuel is ignited by the flames already coming from the combustion chamber and through the turbine fan. The fuel igniting after the exhaust turbine creates more pressure in the reduction cylinder, and makes more thrust out the back. So its an Afterburner by that its burns fuel After the actual turbine to increase how much gas comes out the end.
