Many fullblood Tsalagi didn't sign up because they didn't trust the government and didn't believe in signing away their land, which was the whole purpose of it, to make it easy for whites to come in and get land from our people made so poor they sold their land off. A DNA test will answer the question of blood.

Just because you don't have the paperwork qualifying you to enroll in a federal or state recognized tribe doesn't mean you can't research it and participate in the culture of your tribe, if you are of native blood, and learn the culture. If you look up where your ancestors are from, that's your first clue as to what tribe you may be.It's posers we're talking about who have never had a family or blood connection.

@XDeCoDeX13 Many times the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) can calculate the amount people are by records taken from different rolls such as the Dawes or Baker rolls. They can calculate you blood quantum by taking the degree of your mother and father and calculating it out. For instance if your mother was 1/2 and your father was non-Indian then your blood quantum would be 1/4. It is a weird process. American Indians are the only people that have to prove who they are to the government.
@denalaurens This is true for membership to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) but to be register as United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians of Oklahoma (UKB), you must also have a blood quantum 1/4. CNO does not require its members to abide by a blood quantum. They are the only one of the 3 federally recgonized Cherokee Tribes that do not require blood aquatum. Like I said UKB is 1/4 and I believe that Eastern Band of Cherokee Indiands (EBCI) is 1/16 in order for membership.
@keetoowah13 You err. as I reside in SC where I was certified after a geneological search showed my ancestor on the Dawes Roll. They go by the 'one-ancestor-on-the-Dawes' rule.
@denalaurens Again you are correct anyone can self identify as cherokee but in order to enroll officially one has to abide by the citizenship requirements set forth by the tribes. Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is the only Federally Recognized Cherokee tribe that does not require a certain degree of blood to join but the other do. I am UKB and i have family that cannot be because they are under a 1/4 therefore they enrolled with Cherokee Nation.

Maybe you are not aware of this eligibility change. The Dawes Rolls Started in Southeast not Oklahoma.

Many fullblood Tsalagi didn't sign up because they didn't trust the government and didn't believe in signing away their land, which was the whole purpose of it, to make it easy for whites to come in and get land from our people made so poor they sold their land off. A DNA test will answer the question of blood.

@XDeCoDeX13 Many times the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) can calculate the amount people are by records taken from different rolls such as the Dawes or Baker rolls. They can calculate you blood quantum by taking the degree of your mother and father and calculating it out. For instance if your mother was 1/2 and your father was non-Indian then your blood quantum would be 1/4. It is a weird process. American Indians are the only people that have to prove who they are to the government.

@denalaurens This is true for membership to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) but to be register as United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians of Oklahoma (UKB), you must also have a blood quantum 1/4. CNO does not require its members to abide by a blood quantum. They are the only one of the 3 federally recgonized Cherokee Tribes that do not require blood aquatum. Like I said UKB is 1/4 and I believe that Eastern Band of Cherokee Indiands (EBCI) is 1/16 in order for membership.

Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is the only Federally Recognized Cherokee tribe that does not require a certain degree of blood to join but the other do. I am UKB and i have family that cannot be because they are under a 1/4 therefore they enrolled with Cherokee Nation.

@90rashad I try not to think of those people as 'white', just greedy and misguided. Many people of white skin can be caring and very good people, as long as they were raised right with good values there usually isn't a problem. Every people has their bad 'eggs', there are evil people on every continent and of ever colour.

@90rashad I won't tolerate an ideology from that suggests that people of the same species, just because one group adapted to a lack of sunlight and turned pale, while another group kept darker skin in the ancient days, were destined to be to be "natural born enemies." That may well be true, but that means we have along history of being enemies.
It's good to be aware of our history, but I don't think we should let the shadow of it it control all of our future, but rather learn from it. Every day white people have a chance to not ruin things for black people and other poc. If you say "We are enemies" in present tense, then I just hear the disbelief that change is even possible.

I have an affinity for Native culture too but as an outsider I feel I should keep a respectful distance and observance, their culture has been decimated enough. More power to the the N. Native/First Nation people's who want to hold onto to their heritage. Wish I was Native but I have to be true to myself.
I see alot of people who try to pass themselves as having this amount of Native American blood or some distant great great ancestor which would probably make them as Native as Johnny Depp.

I love the native americans since childhood. Probably because iam German and we grow up reading Karl Mey and so forth. What happened to the Indians is a tragedy many people try to forget, you cant get away from the fact that these things happened. I still think there are gladly alot of native american traces left. And those having some blood of those in them should be proud. Others should dare to fake that ancestry to feel "legitimate on the ground they are standing".

of course he is mixed. I had a native girlfriend once, she had a very "native" appearance, but her grandfather was rather light complexed. "native" cant mean totally unmixed anymore. It is fact that the english, the french and the spanish, portoguese had their colonies in all those areas and they were all known for massive raping and murder. The more north you get, the more mixed you get. If you test on DNA, many "native" people turn out west european. In the US there is even more diversity.

I like this man, for the simple reason that I think it is an affront for me to be asked to "prove" I am a Native American. I am what I am, and I was raised a Native American by my Native American grandparents. I was teased as "squaw" while a girl in Southern American state I grew up in. I was taught Native American culture and respect for peoples of all heritage. Why are Native Americans asked time and again to prove their ancestry..... is so it so we can march on another Trail of Tears?
