I don't understand why there are negative comments about this song. I was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam for over two years and this song makes me swell with pride for my efforts and better understand the hardship it placed on my wife and daughter. I simply do not undertand the people who belittle and mock those of us who risked our lives for our country.
This song was about a distant war and losing someone to it. Viet Nam took so many of my generation. I remember this song as it came on a demo 8 track with my new 66 Mustang Convertible and my husband left for Viet Nam in 1967. He came home but was never the same. He later took his own life. So many lost to a useless war.
could not listen to this record for a long time, although it came out before my mother passed away and she loved this song, it seemed to be for-telling me of what was to be. It always takes me back to that period of my like whenever i here it.Thanks for this fantastic video. R.I.P. Jim Reeves. and Mam and Dad
Class, my dad listened to Gentleman Jim when he came home every week from the North Sea, usually spent all Friday afternoon doing the books, paying the crew, and chilling out, didn't know his stress until it was too late, but he had a long life with GJ, (oh and Olivia Newton John - the auld rascal!)
@smileysal1976 It was played as we were going into the crematorium too. My Dad had specified that he didn't want a religious service - this was perfect as he was a Jim Reeves fan. I have fond memories of him singing songs such as 'He'll have to go' when I was growing up.
He reminds me of my mother, too,who listened to him a lot. I lost my mother within a month of losing my son. Velvet Jim's voice kind of bathes the heart. Thanks
I used to see jim and yhe blue boys in Indianapolis in early 60's. He would always sit at our table and have a drink with us.Oh what a great guy.The blue boys were great too. How I miss him.
SO BEAUTIFUL..................!! I GET GOOSEBUMPS... THIS REMINDS ME OF THE TIME WHEN I WAS LITTLE...MY DAD USED TO PLAY AND DANCE WITH MY MOM.....MY MOM HAS PASSED AWAY....
Jim Reeves incredible velvet voice was silenced way too soon. I loved everything he did. I remember the soft soothing sound of his voice helped my mother out of a nervous breakdown as they used to call them.
what a beautful song...i first heard it the night before my husband left for Vietnam....1967...and it has stayed in my heart all these years....what a ever lasting voice Jim Reeves had....and how lucky the heavens are to have him now singing in their chore!!
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this 1966 UK chart-topper.
One of my late dads favourite songs. I grew up listening to this type of stuff. What a beautiful voice he had. Its such a shame he died so young. We played it at my mums funeral, as her name was Mary. I probably seem morbid, but it was a very suitable song.
@tillie1961 - Agree wholeartedly about the voice and dying tragically so young. He was a favourite of my late mothers and indeed, I still have her treasured singles and L.P's. somewher. When I have a moment to reflect on things, I still listen to his music.
You say Justin Bieber, I say Cal Smith and go grow a pair.

many artists down the years have recorded distant drums, but i have yet to here any one do it like the master there as only ever been one jim reeves and even after all these years his voice still calms and relaxes the years may go by but the voice of jim reeves still reaches down the years
Like many kids in England in the 70s I was surrounded by Country and Western music from the US. I have fond memories of Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Hank WIlliams, Hank Snow, Johnny Cash and many more.
Nice version of this Cindy Walker composition, but the superior rendition of this song was done by Jimmie Rodgers in 1966 on his Country album. Rodgers' tender tenor voice infuses each word with poignancy. In 1966 during the raging Vietnam War this was an especially touching & meaningful ballad.
If i had to chose a Favorite Jim Reeves song i probally couldn't do it but this would be in my top 5 oh by the way this would be the 4th out of his 6 postumous #1 hits and it topped the charts for 4 weeks on 5-21-66.
Played at my Grandma's funeral in September of last year, only two days ago we have buried Grandad to. They are together again, where hurt and pain can't touch them. I love and miss them both so much, and will forever remember them.

reply to meganockie: reminds me of my dad too, he always played jim reeves christmas time on his record player (vinyls), when we were kids, never forget them memories shall live with us forever!
I had a dream once when I was in second grade...this song was featured in it. It was a very romantic dream and a man wanted me to marry him. It was the first time I realized I was attracted to men...that was about 1965...it's been a long time but every time I hear this song it takes me back to that little boy so long ago and oh so far away...
i am an indian with lot of knowledgw classical music . i mean indian music . but when i listen this man something happens in my inner soul he is superb.no words to describe his voice
@lynn61able Well, there is a current artist that has the range, but he just won't do the material. Josh Turner. He could do covers of Jim's music, but whether he would have the same "soul" or not.... Well who's to say. Just wish he would try.
happy birthday mum x god,it doesnt get any easier, what i would give for even 5mins with you again . xxx god bless

@lynn61able Well, there is a current artist that has the range, but he just won't do the material. Josh Turner. He could do covers of Jim's music, but whether he would have the same "soul" or not.... Well who's to say. Just wish he would try.
