@ajlod934893 I really don't care about track times but you happen to be right about AWD cars being beat or dominated by FWD & RWD vehicles.. I look at real world driving. For example here in New York State, USA. During the winter or for off road driving AWD cars win hands down vs FWD and RWD.

I hate to be the bearer or bad news but, you won't see this car until the next revision some time in 2011.
The current platform doesn't meet the U.S. safety standards, and to bring the car to spec would make the car an expensive and unprofitable investment.
Sorry to disappoint you Synic08, this Focus is in the Evo 10 and Subaru Sti terriotry. This car will even smoke a Mustang GT in any fashion, that's why Ford does not want this car here in the US unless this is the last resort to help save Ford from the falling econemy.

No kidding! We briefly had the ST model, but it was basically the 4-door model with a 2.3L I4 engine. I had one and liked it, but come on! Bring on the real ST's and RS's!
I had an American Spec version. its basically like any other Focus, but with a bigger engine, a 5-speed manual, and a fancy interior. It was only $15K for an 07' because it was a rental return. The payments were cheap too, only $225 a month. I loved it, but I don't have it anymore. While I was driving to school on a windy day, a tree fell right across the hood with me in it. Needless to say, it was totaled.

all that talk about FWD being a disadvantage.... how come the older RS with all its torque steer managed a lap time so close to the BMW M3 on Top Gear. The M3 is more powerful and has rear wheel drive. And to axelreit... in snow FWD has better traction for getting up the hills... RWD is useless with all that power in snow. you would have to go for AWD, which is not the best in normal everyday driving. Ask the experts and they will tell ya.
FWD is worthless for virtually everything except slow driving in snow and space utilization. Ford engineer had to do a lot of work to get it decent in a 300hp car.

True but as i said around 300bhp is the max a fwd car can handle in an enjoyable, unfrustrating and safe way, you can run 1000+bhp through the a fwd if you wish but flooring it on anything other than a straight line would be insane. 300bhp and fwd is more than enough for most and i think its a great looking car, but I'm a big WRC fan and would have bought an awd, plus I love cars than can drift, doughnut and just get sideways without pulling the handbrake but maybe thats just me?.
The RS is a nice, fast and payable car, but at last i wouldnt want one because of only 3 doors(i am daddy), frontwheeldrive, i need AWD for driving on snow, and at last, i want poweroversteering for trackdays, no matter if i am slower because of this...

you dont loose that much traction until you go into insane horsepower,, vxr is a vauxhall enough said... and any car that has big power will spin.. i have a civic type R turbo and its 310whp , so about 350flywheel, it spins in the rain but in the dry it grips like any other car.. this RS only has 300bhp flywheel,, about 260-270 whp... AWD rally car is for ofroad not on road
but the diffs and everything the awd system are heavy too, making any car at least 200lbs heavier. An awd car will win off the line, but once u reach upwards of 90-100 it becomes a liability and only slows u down. Yeah fwd understeers and torque steers, but at higher speeds, its freer too and power is not wasted running through 2 seperate diffs like it is in the AWD cars. It all depends on what ur doing with ur car.
but you can still have a pretty light awd car. impreza type r 's are light. and most awd cars now have systems to put most of the power to the rear or front wheels and become awd only when needed. like the gtr
the gtr's front and rear diffs by themselves weigh 200lbs, that's why although it will beat most cars off the line, by the time it hits 100, its behind by a car length. Yeah, its true, you can make an AWD car light, but it takes more to do so. personally i love AWD cars, but a race between a FWD and AWD car with the same power will always be the same outcome...AWD will win till around 75-100, but the lighter FWD will pull ahead simply b/c of weight difference..
if the awd systems works like audi quattro system the looses will be smaller than this fwd system cause the quattro desides at which axle will sent the torque to dont lose so much power and for fuel economy. quattro is the best awd system.

No I have not driven it, but, I have had numerous Saabs, Fords, and Hondas all front wheel drive. Now I also have currently an sti and rs4 and i assure you there is no possibility that an rs ford can out perform any AWD. Period.

Perhaps because after they did some testing they found that AWD adds too much weight hencing reducing performance and they found that FWD was more engaging and fun to drive...

I honestly fail to see how this can compete with EVO X.
It's differential and revo-knuckle suspension can be impressive but in the end it still has 60 bhp less than EVO and it's only FWD and it still takes more than a second to reach 60 mph.
the focus rs is tested in nurburgring an the grip of this car is amazing an the evox have 295cv an the focus 300cv o-60mph in 5,7sg m3 e46 in 5,5sg only 0,2sg than m3 with 343cv an the focus have a competicion intercooler and front anti-block system like the world rally cars(wrc)

Ford bought Volvo in the 90s, this car and the current ST weren't even a thought. Ford bought Volvo to learn about crashworthiness and apply that to their cars. That is why Ford has more 5 star rated cars than any other manufacturer.

as far as i know, it has a new front suspension set up, similar to the old macpherson strut set up but with fords own development of the 'revoknuckle' which basically helps to eliminate wheels becoming too loaded or too light when cornering hard, as well as this it runs a quaiff developed front diff, similar to the one used on the original rs focus but its been designed to eliminate the twitchiness, and it will run upwards of 275ps (or bhp depending on who u listen to) impreza killer!!!
Ford has tested with a 4x4 system at the start of the rs-project , but the system just wasn't good enough ;) the fwd came out faster and more fun! An awd would be far too neutral in it's behavior. This fwd with ltdslipdiff will be more fun to drive and won't be effected by wheelspin tnx to a new developement by the rs-team. People love to crack off ford ..they allways have, but you guys are denieing yourself some great cars!

why should the rs have prob to put the 300PS on the road? the MPS3 has 260PS and LSD too. Even the old RS with the same combination FWD/LSD killed a lot of more powerful cars around the corners. Though not AWD as many of us wanted it, the car will be better than the old RS, and ppl who have an idea of cars know what it means. The new Opel OPC(Astra VXR) should put some more power, cause with the AWD will get some kgs more, hope they dont let it with the 240 ... @Carguy: what is M-Sport then? ;)

Ford North America needs to import this as one step in saving their dismal asses. VW is bringing in the new GTI mark VI and Golf RS in 2009. Ford NA isn't selling as many of those blotted SUVs as they once were. There has been a dramatic increase of sales of smaller cars in the USA over the last year. Alas, I fear few Americans will drop $35,000 for a quality built, fun to driver small car.

Focus is GERMAN, It's different from American Focus. Ford has it's all development in Europe which has surpassed American development by miles, therefore Ford decided that European models will be sold globally. Google "global ford fiesta".

you dont loose that much traction until you go into insane horsepower,, vxr is a vauxhall enough said... and any car that has big power will spin.. i have a civic type R turbo and its 310whp , so about 350flywheel, it spins in the rain but in the dry it grips like any other car.. this RS only has 300bhp flywheel,, about 260-270 whp... AWD rally car is for ofroad not on road

it can be offroad or onroad. awd>>>>fwd anyday. fwd understeers so much. awd doesnt lose too much power and gets better grip.

but the diffs and everything the awd system are heavy too, making any car at least 200lbs heavier. An awd car will win off the line, but once u reach upwards of 90-100 it becomes a liability and only slows u down. Yeah fwd understeers and torque steers, but at higher speeds, its freer too and power is not wasted running through 2 seperate diffs like it is in the AWD cars. It all depends on what ur doing with ur car.

but you can still have a pretty light awd car. impreza type r 's are light. and most awd cars now have systems to put most of the power to the rear or front wheels and become awd only when needed. like the gtr

the gtr's front and rear diffs by themselves weigh 200lbs, that's why although it will beat most cars off the line, by the time it hits 100, its behind by a car length. Yeah, its true, you can make an AWD car light, but it takes more to do so. personally i love AWD cars, but a race between a FWD and AWD car with the same power will always be the same outcome...AWD will win till around 75-100, but the lighter FWD will pull ahead simply b/c of weight difference..

if the awd systems works like audi quattro system the looses will be smaller than this fwd system cause the quattro desides at which axle will sent the torque to dont lose so much power and for fuel economy. quattro is the best awd system.

the 2.5T 300hp engine was already existing on volvo R type, and it's a very good engine!
I think Ford is right to make the RS with 2WD.The focus ST is a heavy car already, heavier than Golf GTI and Megane RS, an AWD version would weight at least 200kgs more...1600 kgs for a medium size sport car would be definitely too much

No I have not driven it, but, I have had numerous Saabs, Fords, and Hondas all front wheel drive. Now I also have currently an sti and rs4 and i assure you there is no possibility that an rs ford can out perform any AWD. Period.

I honestly fail to see how this can compete with EVO X.
It's differential and revo-knuckle suspension can be impressive but in the end it still has 60 bhp less than EVO and it's only FWD and it still takes more than a second to reach 60 mph.

the focus rs is tested in nurburgring an the grip of this car is amazing an the evox have 295cv an the focus 300cv o-60mph in 5,7sg m3 e46 in 5,5sg only 0,2sg than m3 with 343cv an the focus have a competicion intercooler and front anti-block system like the world rally cars(wrc)

Ford bought Volvo in the 90s, this car and the current ST weren't even a thought. Ford bought Volvo to learn about crashworthiness and apply that to their cars. That is why Ford has more 5 star rated cars than any other manufacturer.

as far as i know, it has a new front suspension set up, similar to the old macpherson strut set up but with fords own development of the 'revoknuckle' which basically helps to eliminate wheels becoming too loaded or too light when cornering hard, as well as this it runs a quaiff developed front diff, similar to the one used on the original rs focus but its been designed to eliminate the twitchiness, and it will run upwards of 275ps (or bhp depending on who u listen to) impreza killer!!!

Ford has tested with a 4x4 system at the start of the rs-project , but the system just wasn't good enough ;) the fwd came out faster and more fun! An awd would be far too neutral in it's behavior. This fwd with ltdslipdiff will be more fun to drive and won't be effected by wheelspin tnx to a new developement by the rs-team. People love to crack off ford ..they allways have, but you guys are denieing yourself some great cars!

why should the rs have prob to put the 300PS on the road? the MPS3 has 260PS and LSD too. Even the old RS with the same combination FWD/LSD killed a lot of more powerful cars around the corners. Though not AWD as many of us wanted it, the car will be better than the old RS, and ppl who have an idea of cars know what it means. The new Opel OPC(Astra VXR) should put some more power, cause with the AWD will get some kgs more, hope they dont let it with the 240 ... @Carguy: what is M-Sport then? ;)

Ford North America needs to import this as one step in saving their dismal asses. VW is bringing in the new GTI mark VI and Golf RS in 2009. Ford NA isn't selling as many of those blotted SUVs as they once were. There has been a dramatic increase of sales of smaller cars in the USA over the last year. Alas, I fear few Americans will drop $35,000 for a quality built, fun to driver small car.

Focus is GERMAN, It's different from American Focus. Ford has it's all development in Europe which has surpassed American development by miles, therefore Ford decided that European models will be sold globally. Google "global ford fiesta".
