Mellencamp has long been a populist Democrat. Very outspoken during the Reagan years against conservative economic policies. Listen to the lyrics of "Pink Houses" again; he's a solid guy.

Also his 2003 song "To Washington" was a far more forceful indictment of Bush and the pending war in Iraq than anything other sings (ie. Dixie Chicks) had said, and he fortunately escaped condemnation.

Give his music a second try; he's a slightly more hickish Springsteen and I mean that as a compliment.

That lyric was changed a few years ago because his current wife didn't like the the reference to his first wife that was in the original lyric. Nothing to do with Edwards.
