It's a ridiculously tough call to make. YOU guys try making that call correctly in real time.

The judgment is whether or not this was a controlled play - and it's VERY reasonable for the AR and Referee to conclude that the header attempt did not constitute a controlled play of the ball. Therefore, a very reasonable call. Do you really believe the US player intended to play the ball where it went? Not at all, it was a flailing attempt to clear the ball, no different than a wild swing of the foot. Plenty of people in the broadcast booth, on the field, and posting here don't know TLOTG.

He turned his entire body and reached with his head to meet it. It was a controlled play of the ball, the defender simply reacted quickly and placed the ball poorly. The AR blew this call and there's not a ref in the world who'd say otherwise.

I'm sure I'd be rankled as a Canada fan, but Hutchinson was off when the ball was played forward, whether or not it hit Gooch's head. If that's all it took to negate offsides, a forward could just stand at the 18 and cherry pick balls that glance off of defenders.

@straightdrivez offside isn't necessarily negated because a defending player touches it. The defender needs to play the ball (possess AND control) to negate the offside, subject to the referee's discretion (see Paragraph 11.14 US Soccer Federation's Advice to Referees on the Laws of the Game 2009/2010). He clearly doesn't play it under that definition here. What was clear, and I'm a US soccer fan, was that no Canadian was offside. The ref clearly erred.
Actually, no canadians were offside when the last one passed the ball. Second, the ball came from a US defender, which makes it impossible to be an offside.
Technically he was offside. The ball was being played to the offside Canadian in the middle. Although, he never touched the ball, the fact that the ball was played towards him means that since the American headed the ball to an onside Canadian it gave Canada an advantage by being offside. The player who scored was not offside, but the player who the original ball was intended for gained an advantage by being an offside position, meaning the call has to be made.

This is a tough one. I don't think it's a blatant wrong call. To me it looks like Hutchinson is not offside when he is passed the ball (from Bernier), but my understanding of the offside rule is that when the ball touches the US CB (Onyewu), Hutchinson's position is reset & he is technically in an offside position. What it comes down to is if Onyewu attempted to make a backpass or if it was just a mere deflection.

in my opinion... regardless of whether or not the US player touched the ball last or not, the Canadian player was onside when the ball was delivered... just simply pause at the moment the pass is made... he's in line with the defender... and as stated by many others even if he is offside... the defender plays him on... we saw an incident like this at the world cup 2010. Canavaro played and offside New Zealand player on by heading the ball to him and the goal stood.

The offside call was correct. Check this tutorial on the offside rule on the FIFA laws of the game website:
Google "fifa laws of the game offside tutorial" and click the first link to open the Flash tutorial. Hit next to fast forward to scene 31 which explains this exact scenario. It doesn't matter that the ball deflected off the US player. The Canadian who received the ball was offside and gained advantage when the ball was played forward. Canadians need to learn the laws of the game.

What a terrible call. I was rooting for US but to see this play sucks. I don't think it was a fixed match considering earlier in the game US received a red. It was just a really bad judgment call. Terrible for the Canadian players.

@chrisstevensjunior if the ball comes from an american, then its not offside. When its a small deflection, then its called offside, but that was not a deflection, that was a header, therefore should have been a valid goal.

I'm sure I'd be rankled as a Canada fan, but Hutchinson was off when the ball was played forward, whether or not it hit Gooch's head. If that's all it took to negate offsides, a forward could just stand at the 18 and cherry pick balls that glance off of defenders.

@straightdrivez offside isn't necessarily negated because a defending player touches it. The defender needs to play the ball (possess AND control) to negate the offside, subject to the referee's discretion (see Paragraph 11.14 US Soccer Federation's Advice to Referees on the Laws of the Game 2009/2010). He clearly doesn't play it under that definition here. What was clear, and I'm a US soccer fan, was that no Canadian was offside. The ref clearly erred.

Technically he was offside. The ball was being played to the offside Canadian in the middle. Although, he never touched the ball, the fact that the ball was played towards him means that since the American headed the ball to an onside Canadian it gave Canada an advantage by being offside. The player who scored was not offside, but the player who the original ball was intended for gained an advantage by being an offside position, meaning the call has to be made.

This is a tough one. I don't think it's a blatant wrong call. To me it looks like Hutchinson is not offside when he is passed the ball (from Bernier), but my understanding of the offside rule is that when the ball touches the US CB (Onyewu), Hutchinson's position is reset & he is technically in an offside position. What it comes down to is if Onyewu attempted to make a backpass or if it was just a mere deflection.

in my opinion... regardless of whether or not the US player touched the ball last or not, the Canadian player was onside when the ball was delivered... just simply pause at the moment the pass is made... he's in line with the defender... and as stated by many others even if he is offside... the defender plays him on... we saw an incident like this at the world cup 2010. Canavaro played and offside New Zealand player on by heading the ball to him and the goal stood.

Had the game been against the US however, the Canadians would have sold out the stadium I'm sure. What is it with Canadians and you're constant pissing contest with the US? us was so lucky this game because of the big fuck up and no it was not offside the rule is that if the ball is going to a player who is not in offside and some how gets deflected by the other team it is played as if the us gave canada a pass so whoever is saying it was offside shut it because u dont even know the rules.

Oh yeah I remember that game I was watching the game and when Canada got that "goal" I was like "God damnit" but then he was called offsides for some reason and then I got really confused cuz clearly he wasnt't offsides.

from how they show it, it looks like he is in an offside position from when the ball is kicked, not when the defender headers it to him @simanta2345

@albert30000000000 it wouldnt matter anyways ... even if it took a total change in direction from a defender after the ball was kicked it should not have been offside because it hit the defender last ... it was not a direct pass to the person who received the ball.
Plus ... pause at 0:42 ... he is onside when the ball is kicked anyways.

Had he put that away, USA 3-0 and I don't see Canada coming back from it. Canada wasn't doing good that year, they barely eeked through the group, and were largely outplayed by the USA. Heck, the USA outplayed Mexico in the Gold Cup final too. Canada have nothing to be ashamed of, but they didn't have what it takes to win that game or the Gold Cup proper.

The offside call was correct. Check this tutorial on the offside rule on the FIFA laws of the game website:
Google "fifa laws of the game offside tutorial" and click the first link to open the Flash tutorial. Hit next to fast forward to scene 31 which explains this exact scenario. It doesn't matter that the ball deflected off the US player. The Canadian who received the ball was offside and gained advantage when the ball was played forward. Canadians need to learn the laws of the game.

@lukkypunk look at the video again, the moment the ball is kicked forward (the determining factor for offside) Hutchinson is not even in an offside position. This should not have been an offside call even if it didn't deflect off the defender. The offside call was incorrect.

What a terrible call. I was rooting for US but to see this play sucks. I don't think it was a fixed match considering earlier in the game US received a red. It was just a really bad judgment call. Terrible for the Canadian players.

This is a good call... He is in an offsides position at the time of the pass.. It takes a deflection which still makes him offsides it would have been diffrent if the Defender had posession and gave it away.. Has anybody here taken a fifa ref course?

did u? first off, he was onside when the pass was made. second the defender played the ball, it wasnt a deflection, he clearly won the header but was stupid enough to head down towards Hutchinson. It was clear intent to play the ball so it should cancel out any offside, but doesnt really matter since he wasnt offside when the pass was made anyways.
