  • This is so beautiful - love his rhythm.

  • Brilliant stuff. Martin Carthy has his heart in the right place.

  • Just fantastic.

  • what tuning is this?

  • @jameselectric1 CGCDGA

  • great tune, real as it gets

  • greatest folksinger i ever heard, great performance here.

i´ve been a fan for around 40 years now

  • Carthy competing with the blackbirds and thrushes in his back garden. Brilliant clip.

  • Stunning.

  • Genius. what a truly unique style...

  • Beautiful

  • Fantastic!

  • This version of his is so much more fascinating to me than any other I have come across! Why is it not more popular?

  • There is no doubt that Martin is a giant. I discovered him in the early 1980's when I was first getting exposed to modern British Isles folk music and he just knocks me out. Him and Jansch are just great. His stuff has never been that easy to find here in American, unfortunately.

  • "despite you"- when will our country put that to bed, it must be near soon. Some call it one country, others call it more understanding. We can only hope of thoughts direction.

  • OK Guys.

I understand it's no longer an issue, because what I said on here about Martin was nearly 2 years ago, But I was really obnoxious back then.

I have since since Carthy and Swarbrick, and I totally take back what I said. Sorry to anyone I offended when I posted before.

    Dan.

  • Wouldn't mind being one of his neighbours!

  • I'm always amazed at his guitar playing regardless of how many other songs of his I'd heard.

  • I first saw him (1965 or so) at my local folk club, the Barley Mow, at the 3 Cranes pub in Sheffield. Now 45 years later, living in the Pacific NW, I find him on U Tube...better than ever. His music has brought such volume of joy into my life...My thanks to him! May he live and play forever!

  • Oh I think I've heard the version by the guy he mentions at the start, on one of the Music of the People CDs I think. Anyway yeah, I really like this version; the guy's a legend.

  • how cool would it be to be his neighbour and hear him playing in his garden.

  • I live near shooters hill as well and I think i know which valley he means (not the Charlton one lol)

  • The man is a genius. He does take his time to tune, but perhaps we should all be so careful with our instruments? ;)

    Cheers,

    Jon

  • Lucky neighbors!

  • Im not allowed an opinion?

  • I live near Shooters Hill.

There's still an old set of coach steps at the top.

Next to Shooters Hill is a wide open green space called "The Fanny on the Hill" with a Pub of the same name over the far side.

Apparently "Fanny" was Dick Turpins girl and she would wave a lamp for him to see if it was safe and clear for him to come down from Shooters Hill to the Inn to see her or hide out from the law men.

  • wonderful

  • one of britains most underrated guitar players

  • @burdinus now that is a fact!

  • His singing is narrative.

I think that this is the ballad.

His music conveys the beauty of British trad.

  • This guy is living history. You Brits should treasure him.

  • saw him years ago at mccabes in santa monica. simply great.

  • what a bloody stupid thing for fonzleclay to say!

  • Hve u ever seen him live?

He's an amazing Guitarist alright, he plays with his own style, which i understand takes ages to tune in, but in which case he should have several guitars with him!

  • I have seen him several times in Australia, and his tuning is quick, barely noticeable. He is certainly regarded as one of the handful of guitar "gods".

  • I understand he has is own style, which is great, no one can play guitar like him. But if he wants to play like that, he should have several guitars with him on stage, already tuned.

  • I guess with some people it could become annoying - I've always found the opposite to be true with Carthy because he's such a scholar of trad. music. Often, during the parts when he's tuning, he tends to explain the story and origins of the song and other stuff like that, which personally I find fascinating in itself...

  • why is that stupid?

  • Martin has one guitar which has a unique sound in the low-C tuning he uses. He's very precise about tuning and rightly so, as the octaves/wide intervals he uses up the neck (with open strings) simply don't work on anything except a very well tuned guitar with the right intonation. Even if he bought similar (vintage) Martin guitars at great expense he'd have no guarantee of getting the particular magic this instrument has.

  • Martin Carthy is a great guy!

Most musicians are better live, but he's better in studio, coz i've seen him live @ hitchin folk club, he takes ages tuning up.

  • Does anyone have any lyrics for this?

  • shit I'd like to be one of his neighbors...

  • You just wouldn't mind that guy being your neighbor at all. Beautiful sound.

  • Wow. Where is this clip from? Seems to be quite fresh...? A bloody fine version of this Georgie song and it's always nice to see mr. Carthy singing.

  • Guitar Maestros, series 1, DVD from Sound Techniques, U.K.. He also did "GEORDIE", on his "Crown of Horn" album, a much better version to my mind. -- This version was also done on "Silly Sisters", by June Tabor & Maddy Prior. Martin played (brilliant) guitar for them. -- This version was also done in the mid 1960's on a Julie Felix album, called "Changes". Very different (&brilliant) guitar again from Martin, blitzing all other guitar tracks on that album, which were played by John Renbourn.

  • Actually, there is an upload on youtube, of Geordie; Silly Sisters; June Tabor & Maddy Prior. It is genuine with Martin playing very distinctive guitar.
