And also, does hosting a ventrilo server take alot of your internet capacitity?

You need your external IP... Just google my external ip

Thank you so much! it took me a couple days to get things straight but i finally made my own server :D Buutttt i wasn't able to make it on my comp with Windows 7, I kept getting MSG " contacting server" so i gave up and made it on exp.

A great site to use so you dont have to give strangers your ip is no-ip.com.

If you don't want to use your IP and you'd like something easier to hand out to your friends you could go to dyndns DOT com and get a couple of free domain names. They have an application that runs in the background on your computer and updates the url pointer to your current IP. Works great.

wait so i got the vent server downloaded, i got it up using the 127.0.0.1 ip/hostname (or whatever the starting host name is) but then you switch to your ip, when i do that i cant log in? also my friends cant log in, when they try it just says connecting, is that b/c my router is blocking them?

IF YOU HAVE A ROUTER DON'T USE WHATISMYIP(DOT)COM!!!

Do this: start menu -> run -> write "cmd" and press enter -> write "ipconfig" and press enter -> use the ip adress under "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection"

I did this and worked fine. Thumbs up so everyone can see.

that is your internal ip for your network whereas what is my ip tells you your external ip which will be what people connect to you with.

I learned all this when I first started port forwarding.

@Julzso23 Right, but with my external ip it just didn't work. And I don't know much about networks.. all I know is this: (PEOPLE THIS WORKS WONDERS)

I now use hamachi, so the IP adress I use is the my hamachi network's IP adress. Really simple and it ALWAYS works. No bullshit, no more errors. The only thing is that you and your partners have to install hamachi and join the same network. Hamachi is a free app and it's really useful. Anyone with trouble use hamachi. IT WORKS

ok guys if you are getting stuck try going to ur internet connection thing (usually in tool bar) and click on the 'support' tab. use your ip adress from that. this worked for me. if it helps keep it thumbed up, if not then ignore this comment.
