For an aria like this, I COMMEND Ms. Netrebko for taking risk after risk and letting herself go to the edge. This performance is thrilling. Was it technically perfect? No, it wasn't. However any imperfections are entirely forgiven from where I'm sitting because of her commitment to the character and the aria. Brava, Netrebko. May young singers learn from your example of truly letting go in a performance and not "sweating the small stuff."
I get so fed up with all this "her diction is poor" "Her voice does not suit this part" so what? What should she do? just stick to the stuff thats safe? She would have a pretty short career with a boring repertoire if that was the case. Surely she should keep pushing and keep trying to get better and broaden her range. She has a great voice and great presence, those are gifts and cannot be taught. If she has faults those are technicalities that can be worked on. She's wonderful to listen to.
She tries to make dramatic moves and faces, but... she's too clumsy, and her expressions are almost hilarious. I don't know how to explain it, she doesn't look like Elettra, she looks like someone pretending to be Elettra in a bad way. Beside that, I don't even like the way she sings... beautiful colour of voice, but bad breath and staccati, and the voice sounds... forced. Wrong aria to choose for her type of voice, I'm afraid.
BRAVA!I love her!She is great and very energetic woman! I would like to ask if someone could send me the scores for this recitativo and aria, thank you!
Yeah, no. I mean, I don't have anything against Anna, she's very pretty and charming, and she's really trying to sell the part...but no. Her voice was not meant for the agility of Mozart's work. Not to mention, the the staccati (which happen to be my favorite part) are all wrong. And by goodness, her diction really suffers in this aria.
It's like listening in slow motion! The tempo is so slow so that Netrebko can try to barely sing it! This is terrible! Disgusting! Mozart would kill her if he could come back from the dead!
I really think that Lori Lewis from Aesma Daeva would have done a hell of a better job with doing this song. Too bad she just does the symphonic metal version, which is good too.
milewskiigor: Pendatchanska's voice is like a knife against glass because she uses mouth/tongue vibrato to produce some notes missing in her throat. Many divas do this, esp. in near 3 octave roles: Caballe in Norma, Sutherland in Bolena, Pendatchanska in Devereux... Netrebko does not use these tricks and sings Electra with her chest and body, her voice has beauty and ample power, but phrasing is more difficuilt in this case. She can sing with more agile technique too (i capuleti... for example)
You make very good points. I was actually speaking, though of farther down the line. I will freely admit to being wrong about her, however, and, as a big fan, be glad about her vocal health,
It seems that too many singers want to do roles and arias that are too heavy for them, and they pay for it in a few years. Look what happened to Aprile Millo and Renata Scotto...
@bridrice Interesting comment given that this was uploaded in 2006. Do you think that Anna is paying for it now? She was not at her best in the Lucia last year but it was 4 months after she had had a baby & it was also hard to look good next to Marius & Piotr who were spectacular on that particular day (the MET HD Simulcast). She was, in my opinion, very good in Don Pasquale. I happen to like the 'darkness" in Anna's voice & I think she does this aria justice.
Sond quality of this clip is very low even for youtube, it was not necessary to place it. Untalented singers, worthless musicians and other Netrebkohaters have received an occasion to attacks. I have this Mozart Gala on DVD, Netrebko appeared the last and did a great job considering she's a lyric soprano.
May I ask how the very last orgasmic face she pulls actually relate to Elettra's rage? I think many of her interpretations are full of such catchy tricks.
She is not a lirico leggiero coloratura soprano, nor a spinto soprano. If you don't LOOK but just listen, there is in fact not much 'drama' in her singing.
I think she should be a lieder singer in terms of vocal capacity, despite the huge volume.
Reading your comment I guess not only that you don't know at all the score of Mozart Idomeneo, its cultural background, the work if its contemporaries in literature, painting and theater, but that even if you could read the score (a thing that I strongly doubt), you don't have the intellectual tools neither to analyze it nor to draw the minimum conclusion from your analysis. I always distrust amateurish people that pretend to have an opinion on the basis of You Tube and recordings.
5:42 the high staccati ARE NOT sung if they are manic laughter. These high staccati ARE a "finirà" transformed in manic, insane, terrifying laughter and Anna gives us the greatest performance we can dream of one of the first Expressionist arias ever conceived. We've to wait Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire", to have a panic energy equivalent to Mozart's "Black compositions" . Did you ever see Goya's "Black paintings"(Mozart contemporary)? Acquire an education, then talk.
well too bad guys because she did sing it, to adoring crowds.... shes made it soo far give her a little freaking credit... do i see you out on that stage blowing it up? no. so shut up
Netrebko is a fine singer, but there are some odd moments in this interpretation. The high staccati at 5.42 and 5.49 are sung as if the text is "ha, ha, ha, ha" which suggests manic laughter. The sound is infact the end of the word "finira" and the phrase should be sung as precise coloratura, hence Mozart's staccati markings above the notes in question. I really think Netrebko has little idea of Mozartian line in general on the basis of this performance.
I really, really love this aria! Too bad that Anna Netrebko tried to "sing" it. Her vocals are all unclear, it is hard to understand what her sentences are. Her music is not even close with the characther "Elettra". I also do not think that this role is suitable for her, her voice is too lyric. Try Pendetchanska, Vaness and Moser...and I always thought how good would it be if Cristina Deutekom would ever sing this aria.
@milewskiigor Well of course it is a matter of taste but I have to say you are not looking hard enough than :) The names I have written have proven theirselves much better Elettras and singers than Netrebko could ever be.
@milewskiigor Well as I've stated, it is a matter of taste. Netrebko is not that bad singer, ( I am not listening to her normally. I just wondered, when I say her performing this aria and the result is just like what I expected ) but she should never try to sing the roles or even arias that exceed her technique and musical approach like Mozart's Elettra, Donizetti's Anna Bolena and Lucia.
@MusicVocalism I do not think so, well, it is a matter of taste, for you she might be good but for me she is one of the worst Elettras. I do not think that there is a point to discuss this, and it seems to me that I am not the only one thinking like this! :)
@milewskiigor You must be really loving her, well the better quality only solves her unclear vocals, now I understand it is about the video, but my idea has not changed about her musical approach on the role (arie) of Elettra and I still find her voice unappropriate for the role. The names I wrote above are still superior than Mrs. Netrebko, and I forgot I have to add that, Mrs. Sutherland is a fantastic Elettra tough event though she sang the role close to the en d of her career.
Netrebko is at the same time at both of the extremes - lovely timbre and wide range, but her agility is not enough for dramatic/ coloratura roles - they`re just not for her. Although her staccatto at 5:49 is wonderful, the ornamentation from 5:37 to the mentioned detail she totally destroyed the word 'coloratura' to me. Sounds as smooth as butter, I would like to 'feel' every note on its own. Seriously, listen to Pendatchanska`s rendition and you`ll get what I mean. She has fire.
Her usual lack of breath does not seem to get in the way here, and she provides unusually good support, espcially in the end. Too bad the beginning is riddled with her usual orgasmic gesticulations... and the vapid yet vulgar interpretation aside, taking into account what kind of thing she is, I think this is great.
Netrebko's Elettra is rather good; It's not amazingly great but it'svery good. I think she lacks the tessitura and the dramatic power especially in the higher registers; this really a role suited to a dramatic soprano but too many lyric sopranos take up this role. She does sing it superbly though, and she's at the level of sopranos who really can sing the heck out of it like Edda Moser, Carol Vaness and Hildegard Behrens. She does also get into character as well. Brava Netrebko
hm. sure she tries to express the emotional state of elettra in this aria, and certainly her singing is up to high professional standards. plus: the aria is a killer. it just makes me a little sad to hear a once beautifully clean and well-produced voice now opened so violently, often wobbly and not in tune. all the repeated gs and a flats are taken from below, and reach the right pitch only at the very end of the note. not bad, of course. but not nearly as good as she was.
the best "D'Oreste, d'Ajace" I've ever heard, magnificent, it's maybe the 20th time I watch it and it is more and more fantastic for me. Grande Anna!!!!!!!
I just miss this type of talent. It's sad to see talent like this lost now days... Not saying there are no talented people out there but the world just doesn't care to see them now days.
@madziua90 i have to agree. possibly this is the best thing i´ve ever heard of her... at least live, i´ve always said that she has such an amazin voice for mozart and puccini. it´s a shame that she prefers to do all that bel canto that does not suit her voice
Hi folks, I'm still around!!! There is good news! I send every bad comment at management of Anna Netrebko since 4 weeks.

Lweoira 10 months ago
@Lweoira She sounds so much more beautiful than many other of the "great" singers :/
MusicVocalism 7 months ago
@MusicVocalism I do not think so, well, it is a matter of taste, for you she might be good but for me she is one of the worst Elettras. I do not think that there is a point to discuss this, and it seems to me that I am not the only one thinking like this! :)

milewskiigor 10 months ago
@milewskiigor You must be really loving her, well the better quality only solves her unclear vocals, now I understand it is about the video, but my idea has not changed about her musical approach on the role (arie) of Elettra and I still find her voice unappropriate for the role. The names I wrote above are still superior than Mrs. Netrebko, and I forgot I have to add that, Mrs. Sutherland is a fantastic Elettra tough event though she sang the role close to the en d of her career.

tanneguy48 1 year ago
Netrebko is at the same time at both of the extremes - lovely timbre and wide range, but her agility is not enough for dramatic/ coloratura roles - they`re just not for her. Although her staccatto at 5:49 is wonderful, the ornamentation from 5:37 to the mentioned detail she totally destroyed the word 'coloratura' to me. Sounds as smooth as butter, I would like to 'feel' every note on its own. Seriously, listen to Pendatchanska`s rendition and you`ll get what I mean. She has fire.

#. That's all I have to say.
CantoSemper49 1 year ago

AmericanEvita 1 year ago
hm. sure she tries to express the emotional state of elettra in this aria, and certainly her singing is up to high professional standards. plus: the aria is a killer. it just makes me a little sad to hear a once beautifully clean and well-produced voice now opened so violently, often wobbly and not in tune. all the repeated gs and a flats are taken from below, and reach the right pitch only at the very end of the note. not bad, of course. but not nearly as good as she was.

Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

An amplification microphone is different.
MultiTraviata 2 years ago
oh ok. it could be. why do you know so much about this performance?
cantanteporsiempre 2 years ago
First some basics.
Pop or Popera singers use amplification.
The microphone feeds their voice into an amplifier. Then it goes to big speakers around the building.
You normally see a feedback speaker directly at the foot of the performers.
.
Watch "Bocelli with Netrebko Classical Brits 2008"
Real sound, at 2.55 she takes his hand. You can't ( ok you can) hear him, even screaming into mike. She breaks him in two. Sheer power.
