@UnitedPonys this isnt tightlines. the false cast is used to get momentum in your cast to cast far enough to where you want or u can do it to target exactly where you want to land your fly
So when you pull the string from the reel to make it longer(because it seems loose), so that you can loop it further, what happens if you got a bite? Would you just reel it in? Srries I'm new to this,
THANK YOU!!! Helped me very much! i just started fly fishing this year. I was lucky enough to catch my very first rainbow and brown on my first day of fly fishing.
Great video! I just got back from my first practice session at a park. I had my share of tangles and probably looked pretty sloppy/funny a lot of the time, but after an hour or so it started to come together a little bit. Can't wait to get back out there and hopefully be somewhat ready for my Mammoth trip in a month!
after about a hour of practicing, i went to the bow and landed my first trout after about 15 mins. very exciting thanks for the instructional . it was exactly what i have been trying to fine !
i wished that i watched this video before i went fishing today. lol. This is a great video. i just now practiced casting it right in my pool with those motions, and it worked awesome thx for teaching me the right way to do it.
whats your opinion on combo spin fly rods? my dad gave me his now that he's no-longer fly fishing and i have a great interest in it i really enjoy the learning process of fly fishing and i think i have it down pretty good (well good enough to cast properly) and now i wonder how itll compare to a full fly rod, ive used this rod hundreds of times for spincasting and its one of my favorites and now i can learn fly fishing to! very exciting (sorry for the long message, bit side tracked
Great video. When he demonstrates shooting line he's all wrist in his casts, contrary to what he explains earlier. I guess because he's advanced he can be wristy?
this is very useful information for me. i've been planning on making the commitment of 'living off the land' so i need to learn the various techniques of fishing. your fly fishing videos have been very helpful to me and my future lifestyle. thanks!
thanks so much for this. I am to proud to take lessons . These vids you made have helped me so much. I have been wondering why I cant present well. I cant get the leader to follow the fly line gently into the water. I have been lunging forward with my arm. I will be subscribing to these.
I'm still having trouble having my leader (?) sorry for the english, it's not my native language - the last, clear line that's attached to the fly - clumble up into a messy tangle. The rest of the cast is fine by now I think, it's just the last finish that needs work. Any tips would be very much appreciated :)
This is wonderful. I'm a beginner, heading to Alaska for some Rainbows in August. Hoping not to be a lost cause... What weight would be recommended for some large Rainbows? I may be watching this several times before the trip!
Unfortunately the techniques are different. A true two-handed rod is designed to actually spey cast or skagit cast with and not ideally suited for overhand casting. Hope that helps.
I started fly fishing in Ireland 2 months ago with this tutorial. Today I caught my first fish, a 4lb wild rainbow trout. THANK YOU SO MUCH, THIS HELPED SO MUCH. (The trout tasted gorgeous too)
I just wanted to say that I've been struggling to figure out fly casting after reading a few highly rated books on the subject. A few minutes watching the first two videos here and it clicked - thanks a lot!
I have been fishing regularly for about a decade now. I've used mainly spin-casting gear but have always been intrigued by fly fishing. It seems like such an art. Needless to say, I received my first fly outfit, and have been practicing casting in my yard. I purchased an instructional dvd on fly casting, but nothing compares to these videos. Thank you.
When trying to shoot line at the end of the front cast, do you start to let the line go when the loop is all out, or can you start to let the line out before then. I'm having trouble with the line shooting out at any distance. Love the videos and they have helped greatly.
Recommended by a friend before starting out as opposed to learning from guys with bad habits. Very clearly demonstrated in stages. Can't wait to add fly casting to my salt water arsenal.
Very good video Tim. Maybe you can a video explaining the draging of the line in the back cast (to gain more distance if i understand the meaning of it). Regards from Sweden! :)
I finally gained some ground in casting today, and its because I remembered how this video emphasized the false cast. I was working on form, and trying not to wear my arm out, but I was still only able to cast 15 feet or so, and I got frustrated. When I remembered I was supposed to practice false casting, that was when I got a feel for timing. I learned more in 5 minutes than I had since I began.
Your videos are well aimed. Many experts are so disconnected with a newbie's thoughts that we dont understand what theyre talking about until later. I can understand what youre saying right now. My heart-felt thanks.
This video has helped me more than any other. Sometimes I find myself forcing the line out to the river (yes I'm a newbie, but fishing the big waters). I know when I have a god cast and a bad one.
You are an EXCELLENT teacher. I am a teacher and have been around some good ones but your explanations were great. I just started fly casting in saltwater. I found the answers to several questions i had and see what I have been doing wrong. THANK YOU!
hi just started fly fishing i bought a 6/7 rod is this good for starting off its a ron thompson steelhead2, i all so bought 40 flies but i dont know what time of year 2 fish them as they are all for different times of the year, some river and some lake flies, would you recomend any books on flies and time year to fish them im from ireland thanks
HI, if u can get a copy of flies of ireland by peter o' reilly,I know that they have one in Healy's fishing lodge that's in pontoon co mayo. Also if u can get a copy of fly fishing in ireland by peter o' reilly that's all u would need, but it's very hard to get it's out of print. Best of luck.
I learned more in that 10 min than I have in 3 weeks. U showed me my mistakes like you were watching me make them. Also nobody has shown me the line behind them so I never knew what I was looking for, the long far away view was most helpful. you have a knack for teaching GREAT JOB.
I wish I had of Watched this before teaching myself yesterday. In 12 hours of flyfishing for the first time I caught 1 rainbow trout and my shoulder is sore (still a fantastic day). nice vid.
That is going to depend on what you are fishing for. A 5 or 6 wt. is the rod we sell more of in the shop because it is perfect for trout, panfish and light bass fishing. It is also a great rod to teach casting with because it is light and not exhausting to cast. The 7 or 8 wt rod is also important, because it is used for Smallmouth, Largemouth, Steelhead, Salmon, Pike, Bonefish, etc. Unfortunately you can get 1 rod that will do all things.
Very helpful. I had been forcing myself into some very bad habits, using the wrist too much, flailing the line around, not allowing the line to uncurl completely...
...needless to say i snapped off a lot of flies. Thanks for the vid!
I'm fishing over in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I just want to ask what, if you know, a good fly would be and if i should use a sinker line. Also to add it's mostly rockfish and perch.
If you are making a snapping sound when you are casting it is a simple fix. Chances are you are not allowing your loop on the back cast or the front cast to open up. You are pulling the loop out to quickly. The fix is to wait an extra second on both the back and front cast. You may be rushing a bit. Good luck
Are you looking for a shooting line or standard 6 wt line? If you are looking for a great 6wt line, I would recommend the RIO Gold. This is the shops favorite line. If the rod is super fast the RIO Grand will help load the faster action rods better. Good Luck
Did you just rip off the leader in the tree or break the fly line itself off? If it is just the leader or tippet portion, I would just replace the entire leader.
i need some help while fly fishing I snagged my line in a tree and ripped off the leader line in the process. My question should I just attach some new line to it or just buy a new line all together?
