I suppose it's up to each individual as to what constitutes "over the top" crassness. Color me a cynic, but I think portraying/manipulating little girls in order to sell shoes is a bit over the top, and I am not even remotely emotionally "moved" by it (unlike Schindler's List - which was for the most part a true story).

Worst of all was the "We have softball, you can have the rest" part - which implied to have a happy life, all a woman needs to do is play softball.

actually, "we have softball, you can have the rest" was meant to be a defiant statement of indifference to the olympic directors who got rid of softball, at least as i understood this commercial. i suppose its not really "moving", but I think it gets the point across, and the fact that nike's logo is on it means you will remember them when you think about it

I have absolutely nothing against softball. There is incredible amounts of enthusiasm for the game that unfortunately has left baseball in some levels. What I don't understand is why we have to seperate the two sports. I mean, why can't women played baseball? Its been proven to work in the past (WWII). I mean there isn't a different version of basketball or soccer, so i say let the girls play baseball!

My daughter's high school softball team in Ohio could have won the silver medal. I think 50% of D1 college teams would have known their signs were being stolen and could have won the gold. This commercial uses a double entendre to pay homage to the fact that the Olympics are discontinuing the sport, and couples it with the philosophy that softball is the be all and end all of life. This commercial has something of a political statement as women's softball is being dropped from the Olympic program. It shows the girls playing hard, having fun, Donna Fargo singing a happy, upbeat song.....then at the very end a girl trashes the trophies with a bat, symbolizing the trophies mean nothing and it's about playing the game.....it's very subtle thing, but I think it's a great commercial.

All I have stated is that this commecial, with its well placed double entendre, is another example of a seller of goods totally overemphasizing the importance of what should be a recreational activity and placing on the mantle of a life necessity. Judging by the responses I've gotten to my posts, sadly it seems that many are lined up ready to swallow up and defend this sort of dime store philosophy. Not rude, just a normal perspective. I think you need to get a clue, "MachoDude". Most athletes, not just softball players LOVE their sport and almost consume themselves in it, because it's what they enjoy the most. If people don't have something that they love and can make ther life about, then what is there. You are obviously confused. Especially if you have daughters in the sport, you're really confused. That's all the more you should understand it.
