The "countdown" at the start of this special report wasn't put-in to the intro to make the intro look impressive.

It was put there so that stations not carrying network programming could join the network and not miss the beginning lf the bulletin.

In the "old days", a "Bulletin" or "Special Report" slide would be seen for a few seconds before the words "We Interrupt this program.." were heard for the same purpose....to get stations not running network fare to join the network.

I remember seeing that report when it first broke during Craig Ferguson. Seeing that countdown come out of nowhere was kind of a shock. Shortly afterwards, I woke up mom to break the sad news and she came downstairs to watch some of the reports on cable news along with me.

Most, if not all, news networks/divisions, have something like this set to the side. It may just be a script, or short package, or in the case like this it could go on for 4 or 5 minutes. They usally bring them out and update them when someone of prominence gets up in age or ill.

Since Kennedy had been in ill health, WBZ Radio had prepared a taped obituary which aired right after the first bulletin.

The local ABC, CBS and NBC television stations in Boston pre-empted all programs (other than newscasts) from the first bulletin until the funeral.
