Heyhey. Don't throw stones. If he doesn't know then speak the Word. Read John 11:45. And various other parts like, Jesus at Passover, also you will notice they call Him Rabi. I think Jesus would be more likely to have a chat with a person who doesn't know anything about Him and get to know them. That isn't very Christian to scare someone away from the King of Kings.
Leave to the world to try and take Jesus out these Christ inspired songs. Praise God that the gospel crowd and the African American musicians aren't afraid to embrace it. Bob if you are still loving the Lord or not, these songs are drenched in the Holy Spirit and nobody can every take that away! Not ashamed of Jesus!

Hi, Thanks for your comment. As far as explaining the existence of God, it simply fits the evidence best. First, a random big bang is not a sufficient cause for intelligence. That would mean the cause (BB) is less than the effect (people). Intelligence must have come from a greater source of intelligence. Next, your conscience bears witness of evil. If there is evil, there must be good. If there is good and evil, then there must be a moral law giver and judge. He is God. I know and love Him! thx
@shilohrenovation First of all the big bang is a theory not fact. Its just the most accepted theory. We don't know for sure where everything has come from or why we're here and it could be a higher power but its certainly not the god you talk about. If this god exists then why are there wars, why is there drought, why is there famine why do children die. There's no evidence, just word of mouth and an old book. There is no Christian god and if there is he sure as hell doesn't give fuck about us.
Bob Dylan got saved right about when I did, and it sure gave me some courage to see folks get saved from every group, most strangely myself. Hey, recall Peter Paul & Mary lost a member to Jesus? Apparently his friends didn't dig the change much, and maybe he backpedaled; prob'ly more controversial than Cat Stevens change, strangely, eh? But Serve Somebody made great comeback in movie The Gift recently. It will last. Not just "ART"
It’s beyond my comprehension that Dylan’s religious period is looked down upon, it’s surly amongst his greatest performances, with the strongest and purest voice mankind has ever recorded.
Bob was crucified when he released these two albums. The radio stations kept snickered and called him the born again Bob Dylan. These two albums are timeless.
Bob took up a cross on his shoulders and presented a Christian Idea to a largely unchristian group. Even today, I'm afraid to tell certain people I'm a Christian, so these songs are DESPERATELY powerful. And what has he said that is wrong? We all serve somebody, in our heights and in our lows, we serve SOMEONE. God Bless Bob and God bless us all.
@trublgrl Thx 4 ur sincere comment, Bob Dylan "Serve Somebody" u-tube post, w/ its typical cynical "its just art" spin... @trublgrl Well... Dylan always represented a largely anti-conformity mindset, and I think a lot of people were disappointed in his giving in, luckily he is no longer an avid follower of any religion. I don't mind belief in God, I personally love the story of Jesus Christ, but there can be nothing healthy in giving over your brain to a large institution like what the church has become. I think it is ridiculous that you are afraid to say that you are a christian, especially in a country like US.
Can a man believe in something greater than himself and not invite scorn? I'm a Christian, but I struggle, Dylan hasn't really said anything besides "I think there is a God", and it's controversial 30 years later! Some people believe in things, get over it.

This is from a real low point in Dylan's career, I think. Compared to his music from the 60's, "Gotta Serve Somebody" is pathetic and really quite embarrassing.
@Facepalm96 Musical taste, of course, is fiercely subjective - however, I'm convinced that, had Dylan been singing these exact same melodies with lyrics about race relations, political themes, or the weather, they would be widely considered among his greatest works. Musically they vary from gorgeous to stirring to exuberant. I happen to dig the lyrics, too, which helps a lot. But musically I think they compare favorably to some of his best "non-religious" stuff.
This is a great Gospel album....I love all of Dylan's music, but his Gospel music is timeless and very powerful...The presence of the Living God is in this music!
Bob Dylan is a superb artist who can take the views of others and make a powerful song. What Dylan himself thinks is does not seem to be that important to him. When he was in NYC among the liberals he wrote songs that captured their ideals. That's when I first heard him. Even then I always had the feeling that it was more artistry than personal conviction. I could be wrong.
I think Dyland is a great music writer, musician (who plays just about every instrument) but above all I think Dyland is one if not the greatest poets -song writer!! Not matter how old he is, or whether his music is not the most contemporary but quality and talent knows no time!!
I'm not a Christian, but I consider Dylan's "born again" albums to be among the finest in his entire catalogue. ....which pf course is very high praise. Timeless tunes.
Bob Dylan what can anyone say he is nothing but the best. His songs capture the real heart that leds people to God. He is beyond and above. In this footage was the use of the best Gospel Singers in the business. Bob your great I love you Gospel Singer/SongWriter Cheryl Jamison.
Great stuff. Thanks for posting this. 2 weeks ago I bought Slow Train Coming, I remember when it came out, the controversy it created, Dylan's preaching from the stage (Crowd: Rock'n'Roll!! Dylan: Go and see Kiss, and rock and roll your way to hell!!!), and the deep impression Gotta Serve Somebody left on me, when it won the Grammy, in '79, I was 14. Now I'm listening to it again; what a great album, R&R or Gospel or whatever you might call it, and it's also about the truth.
I discovered this stuff last year and was blown away...I was a dylan freak since '76 but really lost interest after BOTR and Desire. Actually I was excited when he started doing Gospel music because I had become a Christian; but honestly didn't care for his vocals anymore, it had become a strain to listen to him anymore.
Barack and Michelle were married in 1992. One year earlier he took her on a date to a gospel music concert at the historic Quinn Chapel in Chicago. Click on my link above to see Barack and Michelle during the performance of "Been In The Storm Too Long" by the Might Clouds of Joy. ........ Also, yep ... that's Oprah's boyfriend, Stedman Graham.
Bob Dylan is an American icon. Gospel music is a unique part of American music tradition. Seems only natural to me that Dylan would write gospel music!
So Alan Light is saying that the songs mean nothing except for music. If Dylan sings gospel then it is a tune, a style but no feeling? What are you saying, Bob Dylan and everyone else is just faking it when they sing gospel music?
This just proves how good Dylan's songs are! I like a lot of his Christian material...but I don't look at it as Christian material instead I look of it as Dylan material.
In contrast to many mainline churches where leaders privileged restraint over emotional expression, sanctified churches regarded exuberant worship as an expression of the Holy Spirit's presence in believers' souls and bodies—a moment of religious communion that formed the central doctrine of sanctified belief
"rumor that he was converted,or baptized by Pat Boone or something traumatic like that" Here is whats traumatic, jackass... you NOT being converted. "A fool finds no pleasure in understanding, but delights in airing his own opinions" Proverbs 18:2 also Romans 1:22 says "professing themselves to be wise, they became fools"
Isaiah 44v10 graven image just to make them feel good . Exodus 20v3-4 Thay are not of Isaiah 53v7 Why do thay say he said so much . When God said he said not a word.Isaiah 53
you cant blame a man for beleiving something beyond this material world,we could have paradise here rihgt now if we wanted it,but then again youre right to blame the man killing with any god on his side.``god is a concept by which we measure our pain´´ -lennon
In his final years, the man best known for his lines "Imagine there's no heaven / It's easy if you try" was living a life dictated by astrologers, numerologists, clairvoyants, psychics, herbalists, and tarot-card readers. The one song that Lennon wrote during his born-again period has never been released. "You Saved My Soul," which recounts being prevented from attempting suicide while staying in a Tokyo hotel, is known only to Beatles bootleggers.
You copied that directly off a website...but you may also want to read this from another website
By 1978 he had written You Saved My Soul -- referring to Yoko saving him from Christianity, not to God saving him from his life of drugs and sin.
It's Christian propaganda I wonder why they don't talk about Lennon's song from 1980 called "Serve Yourself" in reference to Bob Dylan's "Serve Somebody"
This is great to watch. Bob Dylan is a huge influence on my work.
His performances around that time were amazing in my opinion. I love almost everything he's done.
It's great to see this interpretation. It's very full of life. It's so great to watch these singers just give it all they got. Just the way it should be done.
thats so stupid, gotta serve somebody lyrically has nothing to do with christianity, because of the things he says. serve somebody is an amazing song overall regardless of religion, he just says true things not religious things.
I'd like to think that as George Harrison, began his "Spiritual Journey," as it is written about in the new book "Here Comes The Sun," in 1967, after becoming confused about stardom, that he and Dylan became close as a result of both of them feeling about each other, as simple human beings, instead of intimidated, by each other's, so called greatness.
There is a posting on youtube of Bob playing In the Garden in 1995 at the Brixton Academy. I'm going out on a limb, as a non christian and saying that if I had to identify the creative peak of Dylan's career it would be these three albums. I don't know how the guy on the video could single out only two of the albums as having great songs - try Every Grain of Sand on for size.
if you are really interested in the truth, pray God leads you to his uncompromised word, check out LESLIE HALE on google, listen to his teachings and judge for yourself.God bless you
It was inevitable that a gifted man like Bob Dylan would "reason together" (Isaiah 1) with God and find a relationship with the Giver of Life. (John 3) These are some of his greatest writings. I agree, this is the kind of music (gospel) that is eternal & spiritual
I have always loved Bob since the 60's and remember well when he converted in about 78(?)with slow train coming, it was shocking to me his fan but I think it had a great effect I too became converted a couple of years later. I am greatful to Him for his contribution but it seems he drifted away again. Is this true or is he still a believer?
He is very much indeed still a Christian..A secular Jewish magazine on the web, called Jewsweek, had a huge article on Dylans spiritual journey....you can clearly glean from this article that Dylan , with some misteps, has never forsaken his Messiah!!
Well, that's truly a great relief....After he's expressed himself so beautifully in his gospel songs, even saying he'd never leave the faith in songs like 'I Believe in You', I would have been sad if I knew he'd eventually turned away....
I had wondered the same thing you had but over the years of reading Dylan's own quotes and his friends and then reading this huge article at a secular Jewish magazine, I have no doubt Bob ever doubted his Savior..he struggled like we all do...But Bob is with the Savior..no doubt...go to jewsweek and you can find the article on dylans long spiritual journey...just google it!
Wow, watch out! I don't think Jesus likes sarcasm or accusations based on minimal information. Nothing, NOTHING I said in my original statement indicated an anti-Christian bias. Attitudes like yours, however, point out the existence of Christian hypocrisy and knee-jerk defensiveness....traits that don't really win you any points with most people. I know many Christians who would never say the things you just did to me.
I know Christians always have to have the last word. I have no desire to debate you. I know what I've heard and read, and have followed Dylan since I was a pre-pubescent, and I'm comfortable with my assertions. But go ahead and slam me for purported prejudices that you don't even know exist. WWJD, 'Reverend Steve'?
RevSteve224, Check your facts before ordering anonymous people around. I have seen interviews in which he absolutely professes embarrassment about this brief spiritual phase in his life. Perhaps he separates the music itself from the philosophy behind it. I can assure you he is no Christian now. "As great as his other music"? Your opinion, not mine or that of most Dylan fans.
I just recorded "When He returns" It's just as powerful today as when he recorded it, I am rediscovering these songs again in my own gospel Renaissance through a life of blues and jazz. Rance Allen takes it to another realm and testifies. While right wing sleazy oil polititions use the Christian Base to enslave the world, God is unconcerned, He's gonna set up his throne "When He Returns". Blessed is the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world.
Great cover any one out there that is intersted in Bob Dylan covers by other artists covering Dylan songs get in touch I have a list of 800 on excell and have close to 500 at the moment
dylan always reinvents himself because that what has always does, Its a state of becoming, he'll never reach the point of being easily classfied or compared and it's good to know that he found god.
there was a fat, little and white haired man...he is so cute and what he says he does is great....praying is the way that destroys every obstacles between us and GOD!!!so pray on...

I have it and it still has the $5.95 price sticker on it. Don't see anything about who plays the Hammond b3 organ - but keyboards is Barry Beckett.
Man, I had not looked through these albums in at least 14 years. Maybe I'll go find me a analog to digital turn table...

"like one of the sanctified churchs where i come from"
pretentious much? plus, all churchs are sanctified so its kinda redundant. Great singers, songs and players tho!
godislove92 4 years ago
In contrast to many mainline churches where leaders privileged restraint over emotional expression, sanctified churches regarded exuberant worship as an expression of the Holy Spirit's presence in believers' souls and bodies—a moment of religious communion that formed the central doctrine of sanctified belief

"rumor that he was converted,or baptized by Pat Boone or something traumatic like that" Here is whats traumatic, jackass... you NOT being converted. "A fool finds no pleasure in understanding, but delights in airing his own opinions" Proverbs 18:2 also Romans 1:22 says "professing themselves to be wise, they became fools"

you cant blame a man for beleiving something beyond this material world,we could have paradise here rihgt now if we wanted it,but then again youre right to blame the man killing with any god on his side.``god is a concept by which we measure our pain´´ -lennon

In his final years, the man best known for his lines "Imagine there's no heaven / It's easy if you try" was living a life dictated by astrologers, numerologists, clairvoyants, psychics, herbalists, and tarot-card readers. The one song that Lennon wrote during his born-again period has never been released. "You Saved My Soul," which recounts being prevented from attempting suicide while staying in a Tokyo hotel, is known only to Beatles bootleggers.
baddaboom 4 years ago

OsvaldoPaese 4 years ago
For those of you who deny this song is Biblical based I suggest you do some research.
Dylan says "Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody."
Which is exactly what the Bible says.
You either serve God or the Devil
188Inches 4 years ago 2
thats so stupid, gotta serve somebody lyrically has nothing to do with christianity, because of the things he says. serve somebody is an amazing song overall regardless of religion, he just says true things not religious things.

Make any sense to you?

There is a posting on youtube of Bob playing In the Garden in 1995 at the Brixton Academy. I'm going out on a limb, as a non christian and saying that if I had to identify the creative peak of Dylan's career it would be these three albums. I don't know how the guy on the video could single out only two of the albums as having great songs - try Every Grain of Sand on for size.

Is this true or is he still a believer?
itsaconspioracy 4 years ago
Good question! I wish I knew! He certainly hasn't releasd any overtly Christian music since the '80s.
Let's keep praying for him, eh?
aaronfledge 4 years ago
He is very much indeed still a Christian..A secular Jewish magazine on the web, called Jewsweek, had a huge article on Dylans spiritual journey....you can clearly glean from this article that Dylan , with some misteps, has never forsaken his Messiah!!
Albertanator 4 years ago
Well, that's truly a great relief....After he's expressed himself so beautifully in his gospel songs, even saying he'd never leave the faith in songs like 'I Believe in You', I would have been sad if I knew he'd eventually turned away....
aaronfledge 4 years ago

I know many Christians who would never say the things you just did to me.
meredumais 4 years ago
I know Christians always have to have the last word. I have no desire to debate you. I know what I've heard and read, and have followed Dylan since I was a pre-pubescent, and I'm comfortable with my assertions. But go ahead and slam me for purported prejudices that you don't even know exist. WWJD, 'Reverend Steve'?

Manolis29,I never said he was embarrassed by the songs, but about his 'Christian phase'. Two completely different things.
meredumais 4 years ago
RevSteve224, Check your facts before ordering anonymous people around. I have seen interviews in which he absolutely professes embarrassment about this brief spiritual phase in his life. Perhaps he separates the music itself from the philosophy behind it. I can assure you he is no Christian now. "As great as his other music"? Your opinion, not mine or that of most Dylan fans.
meredumais 4 years ago
Bob is embarrassed by this phase of his career, and is no longer a Christian.
meredumais 4 years ago
I just recorded "When He returns" It's just as powerful today as when he recorded it, I am rediscovering these songs again in my own gospel Renaissance through a life of blues and jazz. Rance Allen takes it to another realm and testifies. While right wing sleazy oil polititions use the Christian Base to enslave the world, God is unconcerned, He's gonna set up his throne "When He Returns". Blessed is the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world.
