I always loved when the upright bass goes a little out of tune at 0:26. It's nice to hear it not washed out by the wall of sound. People never knew what I was talking about when I asked if they could hear it.
The two noises at the beginning of the track remember me to the opener of the movie theme to Top Gun. Did this backing track serve as an inspiration to Harold Faltermeyer? I'm curious.
ScriptWorker/JohnReynolds71: This stuff is absolutely amazing! I have followed Spector's work since 1960 and to have found this trove of deconstruction material is a blessing. Thank you! Thank you!
Goodness what an amazing discovery. How the song sounds without the whole wall of sound. The orchestration can be appreciated. Though it was always a great song this helps anchor the great backing.
The hit version was trimmed down for 45 release by ommitting a ten second instrumental section at the begining which is also heard later in the song before Bobby Hatfield begins the spoken section. There was another 20 seconds ommited at the end of the 45 version but was restored to the recording for the 'Rhino' Greatest Hits CD set in the '80's. The alternate version that you are speaking of was pressed in error in small quantities on a 1970's 'Verve Sounds of Fame' reissue 45.

This is one Spector/Wrecking Crew track I've always wanted to hear sans vocals. I'm glad I found your channel, great stuff!

It's interesting to hear the riff from Hang on Sloopy (also by Mann/Weil) quoted in the section starting at 2:40.

@reichardtaj I believe Glen Campbell was a member of the Wrecking Crew and played on this.

@28mark Dick Bartley included the alternate version, with the extended intro in one of his earliest Sixties compilation CDs.
