  • Lol i sent you a pm about a recommended sander and I didnt realize it but this is the machine you recommended. Awesome, ordering tomorrow

  • great vid answered a lot of questions. i was always told NEVER wear long sleeves in the shop, because your sleeves could get caught in the machines same goes with gloves. just what i heard

  • great video ,answered all my questions.

sorry about the request for the video, i didn't see it the first time searching.

    thanx!

  • Hey man, is the heat process and sending it in 100% neccesary?

  • @Nuchuga of course it is

  • @gavkoo so what exactly would happen to the knife if you did not do that

  • @Nuchuga Without heat treatment the metal will be too soft to hold an edge through any type of real cutting. You can heat treat certain steels (O1, W1, 5160, high-carbon steels mostly) yourself. If you are using a stainless steel like Gavkoo, it's best to have a professional do it. Also, if you have a professional heat teat done, it's a good idea to have more than one done at a time, because it will cost the same as just one blade.

  • @Thebatterside How much does it tend to run per blade?

  • great...good info. thanks!!!

  • Hi, love your videos man! I've been looking for a beltsander like the one you're using in this video, but they are all 110V and like you, I live in Europe and need one which is 220V. Are you using a power converter or is your beltsander 220V? If so, where did you get it? I can't find anything cheap in Europe which fits the bill like yours does.

  • @stoffi i dont know man, im in usa, not europe..

  • @gavkoo Oooops, sorry. Got the impression that you were in Slovakia. Either way, great vidz man!

  • @stoffi There are ones on E-Bay for £71.99 shipped 1" x 30" if that helps?

  • cool, watched the whole thing, now im gonna watch ur handle making one. :)

  • Gavkoo is it ok to use the sander for wood and g-10??

  • where did you buy the grinder? who makes it?

  • excellent - you are quite a craftsman Gavkoo - you do great work - i personally like darker handle materials but i am a big fan of the drop point blade design

  • how long does it take you to make a knife

  • @schulhoff18 it depends on how big and how complicated handle. but i guess average complete knife with the sheath is somewhere between 8-10 hours

  • @kopellhinex shut up

  • You have just motivated me to buy a steel strip/bar. Saving up for a cheap little sander similar to yours. :) Thank you.

  • How much to make a set of throwing knives?

  • @Bobbysmitreshop It is interesting to see what steel and Rc and all that would be needed to make a throwing knife. As soon as you start throwing knives most just mess up.

  • Currently I design and create my own custom kydex holsters for handguns. I also am doing knife sheaths however I always wanted to design and make my own knives. I've never worked with steel like but I’m so very, very eager to get started. This video and several of your others has made it possible to take on creating my own knives, so I can't thank you enough. I’m looking forward to checking out your other video on shaping the handle materials, again thanks for the kick ass “How to” videos.

  • @ArmedCivilian556 thank you for your kind words. im glad the videos helped :) but i dont think i will show how do i do my handles. i will make a shorter video on how to put the handle together but i wont show everybody (even though its obvious enough just from looking at it) how do i do mine. let everybody come up with their own or figure it out themself...

  • @gavkoo I agree - there’s tons of video's on UT showing “how to” but until you do it yourself and figure out some of the more tricky skills sets out and come up with your own methods of doing things.

My current holster design took me a long time and many tries to develop and get it just right, as I’m sure you know the feeling. Anyway get video and really some kick ass products.

  • @firefox1341 dont know man. I've only worked with 154cm, 3v and aebl as to make full custom knives from scratch. I see many people use 1095 but i dont know if its because of the easy to work with or what. I prefer stainless. Maybe try the aebl, its cheap, thin and very easy to work with. Plus its very good performing steel...

  • @gavkoo what steel do you recommend for beginning knife making because I want to start but i don't know much about the types of steel to use.

  • @firefox1341 just to chime in, If you plan on heat treating the blade yourself get a carbon steel, many carbon steels can be heat treated at home with fairly primitive tools. Ask around for 1084 or 1095 spring steel. This is what I started with and it is fairly inexpensive, readily available (usually) and pretty easy to work with.

  • Your my new best friend...

  • would be great because in starting to second guess if i should have bought that sander or even started trying to make my own knives. thanks alot

  • @TheThor153 that cheap sander is just fine, same as the one i have, trust me, its all in the belts. you need 36-40 grit ceramic belts. or at least zirconia...

  • @gavkoo awesome sounds great ill order some from supergrit then and try it. do you have a problem with the grinder stopping on you when your grinding. are you pushing hard of just light pressure? and about the steel do you think the stuff i got from menards is really hard as well?? thanks for you help man. love your new friction folder as well

  • @TheThor153 no idea about the steel man, sorry. yeah it stops when you push too hard. you just have to get use to how to work with it. its cheap and weak but hey, it can do the job pretty damn good i think...

  • @gavkoo thanks alot for the help i will have to order some from super grit. do you think it can be the steel that i bought is really hard?? im loving your taste in knives and i love the new friction folder. keep up the good work you are inspiring alot of us

  • @TheThor153 sorry about the double post

  • i just bought a 1X30 sander from harbor freight for $40. i bought some 1/8 steel from menards befor i order some good steel from alpha. i used the sander with the 80grit belt that came with the sander. i took 3 times longer to grid what you did in the video and i had less to grind. do you think its the cheap belt and the grit is to high? or i was thinking its a really hard steel. is the steel from alpha pretty soft befor you send it to heat treat? if you could answer those questions that

  • This is awesome! Thanks for the tips and such!

  • I have the same belt sander as yours. You have a good skill but I didn't. So I burned the edge off and ruined some knives during bevel reprofiling. They were cheap knives and I didn't want to use it for my important knives any more. Doing by hand took much time but it was much safer for my purpose. But after watching this video I made up my mind to retry it. You hold the blade the edge side up. I did it the spine side up. I want to watch what you do to the edge after the heat treat. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice Hey Wako, I Don't know about Mike, but I have a 2'x42' grinder that I use to reprofile all my knives to convex. I do them edge up also so that I can see what i'm taking off. Use a water container to cool/quench the blades immediately after each pass so you don't affect the temper. It takes a very easy touch. After the profile change I use sanding blocks of increasingly finer grit the polish with leather strop. Which I learned from you on your channel and am very grateful. Domo .

  • Thank you for the response. That is a bit out of my range right now as I only get so much from the VA per month. I will try to get with you when I have the money to buy one of your folders. I really like the design and would love to add one to my collection. Once again thank you for your time.

    Mike

  • As a disabled Army Vet I'm on a limited budget. But I would love to have one of you friction folders. So how much would you charge for one. Please respond as I really would like to get one. Thank ypu for your time.

    Mike

  • @bullseye0169 they go for around 170-200. will see once they're done... sold the first two i made for 180 and 190

  • Thanks for showing us Mike.

I think I'm gonna give it a go, just need a belt sander.

  • great video! I might try making my own knife with my dad once i got the money to buy all the supplies =)

  • Long awaited video thanks

  • Awesome video, thanks for it Gavkoo!

  • we'll I'm inspired I am going to harbor frieght this week to get a belt sander!

  • why dont you cut the excess with a metal saw '??, u will save lot of time and grinding belts

  • awesome man, thanks for sharing your process, now i'm gonna have to go and get one of those belt sanders. :)

  • Great vid to end the great year of 2011. Hope to see more on 2012. Happy new year m8.

  • Hey man, @ 23:30 in the video the doorbell rang. It could've been UPS with a nice package...LOL Hope your holidays are going good.

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • How much is.it to heat treat a knife? Do you do a bunch and then send.them in all at once?? Thanks. And you are making me broke! I just sent a ton of cashola on steel g10 and kydex hahaha

  • hey gavkoo thanks a lot man. We have been looking everywhere for belts and the website you gave in the description helped me out a lot. Cool vids don't stop doing what you do

    -paul

  • this video is awesome. i have been hoping you would come out with a video like this.

  • gavkoo how many pk is your sander?

  • Very informative vid. Great job Gav, knife looks great as well.

  • cool video. Just wondering, would an angle grinder work better for cutting off the bulk and then use the sander for shaping?

  • Thanks for making this video! I am an Amateur knife maker myself and I just got a belt sander for christmas so I am super excited to try it out but I learned a ton from your video so thank you alot friend! Nick.

  • @WarzoneMerc You're kidding, right? Not only i said it in the video but even wrote down in the description...

  • One question and one question only...where do you get your Kydex?

  • Very cool video man, it's nice to see how you make those beautiful knives.

  • Great tutorial and information. I've been looking for one like this for a while. Thanks.

  • @MrZagGrad not yet. The good band saws that are actually capable cuttig steel like that are pretty expensive :(

  • You make really beautiful knives, handles and sheaths.I think your work is really cool. Can you ship to Israel?

  • Have you ever tried to do a rough cut of the shape with a bandsaw? Maybe it would save a lot of time.

  • Excellent vid Gav, thanks for sharing! Could you add that other vid for the scales as a VR please!

  • @gavkoo do you find it quicker to profile the blade with the belt grinder or the bench grinder? seems from my experience that the bench grinder would be quicker, then you could touch it up with the belt grinder.

  • what does the tatoo on your rist mean?

  • I hope to one day make a few of my own knives. Your videos are both educational and inspirational. thank you and keep em coming brother.

  • Mad skills gav! Your awesome!

  • Excellent video sweetie :D I really enjoy your tutorials!

  • do some more kydex sheath making my friend i love them and you explain them well

  • OMG TY SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!

this helps me out a lot. thanks.

  • Thanks for the video. Very informative.

  • @BkbladzZz It takes off metal slower then good ceramic belts, its more dangerous, noisy and one more tool that you need to have and swap when used. Me personally preffer the belt sander over the grinder. Its pretty much same as i was talking about that bench grinder. Its slow and burns metal...

  • If i were you, doing this stuff on a daily basis, I would be using the organic vapour/acid gas P100 filters on your mask. The pink plastic ones with yellow tape. Try them once, you won't go back.

  • when ur grinding on the top wheel of ur belt sander does it make grroves in the wheel or wear it down?

  • Come on Mike. . Amateur !?! Your knives are awesome you are an artist. Especially your scales if the big brand knife makers had 6% of your imagination we'd find something else than black handles everywhere. My 4 year old son and I really enjoyed your video, hopefully we'll see the scale making in another video :)

  • @baphomet58 using the non supported section of the belt or the "slack" portion is what makes it convex

  • Great tutorial man ! You do awesome work using very little :)

  • Great Gav , grinding is very hard and people don't now how much time and concentration should , especially with high-quality blade tools with what we do Gav ! Respect !

  • Awesome man!! Thanks a lot it helps

  • Thanks. That answered a lot of questions. But... Where do they go for heat treatment?

  • i tried to make a convex grind on the tbale grinder ... but i suck ;D looks like its easyer with a beltgrinder ... or you are just a better knifemaker than me^^

anyways realy good video! thank you gav for takeing time to make this tutorial ;D

  • Brilliant tutorial...will there be a part two showing the handle work and the finished product?

  • nice video gav, but m8 bolt that belt sander down.

  • awesome!

  • Excellent vid, you're very talented.

  • so i don't exactly get what makes it convex. is it the fact that you grind the blade facing down first, and then grind it at a smaller angle while it faces up on the grinder?

  • i just noticed it says "Amateur Knifemaking"

....idk man I would have to say you have surpassed amateur a loooong time ago you humble motherfucker! I'm sure everyone who reads this will agree. \m/

  • Love the videos! Keep em coming! I have done a little forging before (I'm working on finishing a knife out of a railroad spike), I want to do a few knifes from metal sheets, but I have little if any time, 5 horses and 3 dogs is quite the time consumer! :)

  • @1911gavin that's bad ass i'd like to see that! and dogs kick ass!

  • hell yeah workshop vids kick ass!!

  • what company makes that belt grinder?

  • well the only down side of gloves is getting your finger pulled down by the belt. I saw a guy turn his thumb into a triangle when a belt took the top of his glove down.

  • Ive been looking for a video exactly like this.

  • great vid brother! you make it look easy! one day i will get a custom from you.

  • Ahhh that's why the clamp was on the sander. Very informative video Mike, thank you so much. I must make time to do this myself. Take care. Think that's gonna be one sweet edc

  • Does anyone know what steel he uses? I'm not sure if he said it or I just missed it.

  • @Elliotw11 154CM

  • bullshit in witch way (not saying in bad way saying as a question) i do a ruff cut then grind take all of 5 min on the whole blank then i take to belt sander jig cost me 2 dollars i will shot u a link when i put it up if u want and just giving suggestions u can to about 4 to 5 knife per wheel with the cheap harbor fright one that r 6 dollars for 10 it cost me 75 cent and 5 min of my time u should try it but again what ever u like better

  • PLEASE NOTE: do not wrap the knife in a cloth or anything or wear loose fitting clothes you will lose a hand , I almost did years ago when the cloth got caught and almost sucked my hand in .

  • @GamersBar although i would still suggest wearing some certified tight fitting shop/welding gloves

  • looks like its going to be a great looking knife.

if you are wanting to sell it once its finished i'd really appreciate it if you would let me know. i'm very interested :) take care and keep up the great work!

  • Nice work Mike!

  • cool

  • Nice job! I always enjoy watching your videos. Hope you have a happy and safe new years.

  • can you make a knife with a hamon

  • What'd you use for drawing an edge for the blade again? Something about a gadget?

  • very awesome sir, thank you very much for putting this together and posting it. it is greatly appreciated...

  • how are you cleaning up the G10 and fibreglass that you are sanding away so you dont have it in the room when you dont wear the mask. footsteps will raise that stuff up into the air pretty easily.. thats my one downfall is not having a decent extraction system.

  • @knivesandstuff i actually always have the vacuum set up next to whatever im grinding, even metal or kydex. everything... didnt put it on in the video just because of the noise... always clamp that hose right behind whatever im grinding in the directions of the dust. but its actually habit already to walk in to the room and put the mask on at all times...

  • @gavkoo good idea.. that will get most out of it.. I think G10 needs an ultra fine micron HEPA filter.. I might actually try using hand files on G10 and water for coarse removal.. just to see what happens.. take off big chunks rather than lots of small..

  • @knivesandstuff i did the research about a month ago when started to make knives p100 filters dont filter it out there more on the line of paint fumes and wood( the round pink ones like gavkoo has) i called 3m and they told me it wont do the best job at filtering it because its not a fine filter they showed me one that was 150 with the mask and you cant buy it separately so i did more research and 3 days later i found this guy i found out is is a fine micron its made for sanded fine air born

  • @knivesandstuff continued materials and its only 25 us dollars i dont know how much uk and this really concerned me too because im only 16 and my lungs aren't fully developed so i took my time on the research but its dosnt work the best with carbon fiber because its even finer but better then the p100 i can put the link because of youtube copy this into amazon

MSA Safety Works 817663 Multi-Purpose Respirator

its show all info on amazon

  • cant wait to see you do the handle!

  • u should get a angle grinder and a jig its quicker and cheaper if u want watch my shop vid that i will have soon

  • @BkbladzZz o have angle grinder. its bullshit.

  • @BkbladzZz Angle grinders are more dangerous especially when using them on small sized projects.

  • Great job gav... I hope 1 day I can own 1 of ur blades man!!!

  • this was really cool and interesting. you make it look so easy though, i know if i tried i'd have at least 10 throw away knives before i got it remotely right

  • thank you so much bud. i found this really cool belt sander for 109 bucks at lowes and a drill press cant wait to make knives its a dream you stuff is awesome bro

  • this will hlp me out a bunch Gav ,Thanks! :D

  • Second viewer lol

  • But awesome vid

  • first.. viewer?
