A long long time ago a friend of mine played this song on the Bandura (a 100-string Ukrainian instrument that emulates a lute). It was beautiful. I asked he play this for a Cuban friend and my Cuban friend loved it...the universal theme of rising up against oppressoion...Cubans and Ukrainians...pobres del tierra..bidniyj svtu..Jose Marti and Taras Schevchenko la idioma libertad y patria..batkivschena i svoboda.....
I was 8 yrs old when this song came out. My father listened to it all the time when he picks me up from school - it certainly was his big favourite as well as mine.
@capmo - Better go change it on Wikipedia, then, because the uploader just copied and pasted the entire Sandpipers article from there - without attribution. And speaking of rip-offs - the Sandpipers just musically copied and pasted Pete Seeger's 1961 Carnegie Hall concert album version of this song - right down to the narrated translation at the end. The tempo as well is from Seeger - any Cuban or anyone else who knows the music will tell you that this is normally sung much faster.
@CompVid101 I've listened to many songs sung faster or slower than others have sung them. Just a variation to show some originality. I really like this version alot! Great group!
the other trio "sandpipers" were from Pensacola & were 3 very young teenage girls, after they had one hit - the name of their group was challenged by these men so the girls vanished ...
Absolutely exquisite song! I once had an Hispanic friend of mine who would hum this song to herself at work! Thank you posting this masterpiece from a musical era that I was lucky enough to live in!

The fist stanza has some typos in the Spanish lyrics:
Yo soy un hombre sincero,
De donde crece la palma,
Yo soy un hombre sincero,
De donde crece la palma,
Y antes de morirme quiero,
Echar mis versos del alma,
