Madonna only wishes she could have been as great as Nellie McKay and made such brilliant songs. The masses are truly missing out on genuine greatness. But then again,they usually do.
It doesn't matter if the masses are missing out. Nellie is way too hip for the room. I'm kind of selfish and like to have Nellie "to myself" in a way, as long as she stays commercially viable enough to keep making music. It will be interesting to see how successful her Doris Day tribute album is and if Verve will allow her to maintain her creative originality going forward.
I find that quite a few songs on PLH would work well playing over beginning or end credits of movies, and this one would work well over end credits. "Swept Away" would be a great TV theme. And Nellie would be a billionaire if she chose to be a jingle writer.

I really like her "question authority!" songs, but the heavy rhetoric bothers me a lot. She's sort of a hit or miss with me.
