In my opinion from from sportsman to another we all work hard and some has strenghts in departments others haven't.I am age 50 and tried the Concept 2 6000m,5000m,2000m,1000m,500m and 4 min rowing.See a video on my page 16 to 50 it may surprise you.Good day all.Check Phillip Cameron on the Concept 2 L/weight and see my progress I havn't rowed for 2mth and my rankings has slipped.
His time is ok but nothing particularly impressive. That is not an insult it is a fact. I don’t know ANY decent rowers of Ivan’s size who are slower. He time does not reflect well against those of comparable rowers.
I can’t show you any rowers KettleBell results because they all know better ways of achieving their specific requirements for strength training. This is not an insult we just have no need of KettleBells in our sport as there is no evidence to support such a requirement.

Chris what i mean is we are basically cut from the same branch man. the training is remotely similar. we are embracing your row machine. we like it and you are attacking the shit out of him like he did you dirty. i have to say its uncalled for. i have been training on the row machine myself for about 3 weeks or so now and i too enjoy what the row machine does. my body feels much better, my coach says its good for recovery. no joint pain at all really. its smooth all the way around.
Read my response. You are missing the point. The athlete who achieved well over 20% better power output than Ivan ( a huge difference ) was very new to rowing as well. This is the key point though - Ivan should be out performing rowers over 500m because he is a) A power athlete and b) Much bigger than the average rower. If I was advising someone to train for 500m I would prescribe weight training, and not rowing. Ivan DOES NOT do well compared to top rowers and he should beat them.
@ChrisBrett2K You are confused, Ivan is not a Power Athlete. Kettlebells are an Endurance Sport. Also, he was maybe 104kg at the time of this performance. Perhaps on his second attempt he could do better, but the point still remains that a kettlebell athlete can do within 5 seconds of your hero pro rowers, yet you and your pro rowers will not accept our challenge to even try "girls weight" kettlebells. If you agree, I will overnight you two mens kettlebells and you film your first attempt ok?
KettleBell training is an extremely specific technical discipline so 1st attempts will be particularly poor. It is obvious to anyone who has even a shred of sports science knowledge. ANY very big, strong reasonably fit guy should be able to pull close to Ivan's time on a 500m. This is because it isn't as technically specific a sport.
Your argument is like saying an average pole vaulter who can run 12.0 secs for the 100m is better than UB because UB can't vault on his 1st attempt.
@ChrisBrett2K i still for the life of me can not understand why kettlebells bring so much drama. one reason he might not have done as good as his potential would suggest, is because he probably just the day before if not the same day broke a few different KB records and throughout the week. this was his last day of a long week of hardcore kb lifting. his motor skills were shot. also was probably boozing the night before. its irrelevant though. why all the hate toward my man denisov?
Show us a vid of him doing 2k in a single on the water. And we'll compare that to a vid of a rower trying to do some kettlebell training. I think a rower would fair better.
The guy starting this world record had done 1:15 for 500m after very little rowing. He was an ex cricketer and an ex smoker and weighed a lot less than Ivan. He was certainly genetically suited to rowing but nonetheless he was producing over 20% more power per weight than Ivan and that is a very safe estimate.
@ChrisBrett2K Yes, those are great results. You seem to be missing the point though. A Pro Kettlebell Athlete does "well" on the rower the first attempt. I will assume that a top male rower could do well on their first attempt with a kettlebell too, but only if compared to our top girls. Give them some 32kg kettlebells and they won't even go the distance, buried by the weight! We try your machine to test our general physical preparedness, not to break your records. The offer still stands...

The best BIG rowers would perform well (way above average) at Kettle Bells. Statement corrected now we can all be friends. Remember I have never criticised Ivan I'm just subjecting his rowing results to expert analysis.

Ivan wishes to test his general capacity by other means. He rowed, ran a marathon, lifted barbells etc. and is not afraid to try something he has never practiced and put it up on Youtube. Again, we like your machine. It's good for cardio etc., but it's nowhere near the overall Fitness rewards of Kettlebell Lifting.

You ask about his 2k, but Ivan is in Siberia with a metal ball with a handle that costs a few Rubles, not $1300 like this Concept 2 Rower. C2 put the 500m test as a "Standard Distance" not us. I'm sure you are right that 500m is not the most respected test within the rower community, just like 5 min is not in Kettlebells. How about you donate a C2 to Ivan and we will send you a KB ;)

The best 500m athletes are very large powerful weight training athletes so Ivan should be excellent (better than arower). He is not. 1:19 for a 115Kgs lean mass athlete is actually fairly average especially considering he is a world record holder in your sport. In short your statement is poorly researched and misleading

@flapersonaltrainer1:27.1 is quite an average time (unless you are very light). I have never gone slower than 1:24 even when I have been VERY unfit with a lean mass of around 90 kgs. If you are interested in improving your rowing times talk to people who know about rowing on one of the Concept2 sites.
This was Ivan's first time touching an erg. He had never seen one before. According to Concept2's online rankings, he's #10 out of 4403 people in the world who officially ranked in the 2011 season. That's not bad.
Concept2 required him to input codes from the PM3 to verfy his time.
I wonder if the best rower in the world could even make the list of top 100 best Kettlebell Sport (not kettlebell fitness) results from 2011; that is assuming he had never lifted kettlebells before.
To clarify there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Kettlebell athletes have superior conditioning to rowers. I would argue that it is more likely that the opposite is in fact true.

@housetrance11 Exactly the actual truth is that for an athlete of his lean mass he actually scores reasonably well (no better than that) over 500m which is a power athlete event. No rower can match his world record score with kettlebells but any half decent heavyweight rower would score reasonably well with kettlebells. No kettlebell athlete could match Rob Waddel's 2K world record.
I am a reqasonable heavyweight rower who is faster when untrained than Mr. Denisov over the 500m distance which should favour him. I can't see any relevance to your point whatsoever. I was around 100-102 Kgs when in peak condition (How is that lightweight?).
You simply cannot ignore the fact that much bigger guys are much faster than smaller guys over a 500m erg sprint. It would be like a 50Kg distance runner bragging about beating powerlifters who had attempted a 10K run.
It looks like Ivan has a lean competitive weight of 112 kg. So in summary he is slower than a decent ex rower in very poor shape with about 20 kgs less lean muscle mass.
PS After retiring from rowing, in pretty average shape and weighing in at around 103Kgs (About 10Kgs of this was lard). I pulled 1:18.3 with no specific 500m training. I was training 3 times a week at the time on the C2 rower for 1 hour each session.
1:19 is good but not astonishing. How good he is depends on how big he is. How heavy is he? If he is really big then 1:19 is only ok. Which top rowers have you tested on the kettlebell tests? One other point to remember is that the 500m is not a rowing test but is usually an event suited to large weight training power athletes. In summary your assertion that kettlebell training is better for all over physical conditioning is seriously flawed and your argument is very weak.
@ChrisBrett2K lightweight rowers always bitch about heavy guys having an unfair advantage in indoor rowing. But they never say anything when they're out running, having 50 kg less to carry around when they're running an 800 meter.
Impressive. The dude is fit. I will have to read up on professional kettleballing I guess.

even the best weightlifters struggle with some of the weights and reps ivan does. watch him do 52 reps with 60kg.

I love that he uses a heart rate monitor. I have been using them for at least a decade. I never train without one. Ivan is incredible.
