You're deluded. I can spot the animation from a mile away in any FX movie in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s...prety much(doesn't mean I don't love old sci-fi movies). Many FX films these days have absolutely stunning effects which push our sense of what is real and what is not.

This is pretty much the same method that was used when Darth Vader kills Obi-Wan Kenobi. They had a fake Kenobi (basically an empty Jedi robe) hanging from a wire which was dropped when Vader hit him, so even super-cheap effects like this CAN work if carefully shot and edited together.
