For sure Ashcroft had to have been going through some kind of inner struggle with himself, to write something like this. In this tune, he accurately and perfectly paints a picture of someone depressed and nearly hopeless. It's made me break down sobbing, this song. Then I read the comments, and I see I'm not the only one who's been knocked out by it. This Time is all about your tired, beaten and bruised guardian angel who refuses to give up.
loved the way the way they sampled 'The Hand Clapping Song' by 'The Meters' on this track. Allways wish they had given the outro a longer fade so you could appreciate the intricate production a little more.
when the shit in life gets hard to bear i pop them earphones in take a breath and a stroll, this song sorts it,sometimes you just gotta humble yourself.
it's beautiful to see that The Verve songs have touched the hearts of so many other people beside me. Words can't expres what I fell when I listen to Urban Hymns.
I bought this album around 98'. I was 19. While every one was playing commercial garbage I was playing this and my friends would talk shit. Morons never got it. Takes a lot of people a lot of years to mature, open up, and hear some thing the puppet masters dont play for you. I force fed every one around me real music. When ever you sat in or around me you heard Pearl Jam, Zeppelin, Aphex Twin, Limp Bizkit, Van Halen, Megadeth, The Lox, Canibus, Alice in Chains, Candlebox, ATB, Incubus.....
I think it is easily their best song! It touches something in me. I'm truthfully not some huge fan of the band. I like them, just not a huge fan. But this song is just something different altogether. There are just those songs that go beyond our realm. They reach a barrier and then burst right through them. This song has an intensity and value behind it that pushes itself into a deep place within me and many others I have spoken to. Thank God for good, heart-felt, real music.
yes, this song is my favorite and bitters sweet symphony yes the verve is magic and his songs active your emotions and for my are bad times now you are my hero tranks for this song
sublime album. this is one of the best tracks featured on it - i used to play this over and over back in the day and its amazing what memories came back when just listening to it again
OMG! I used to play this song over and over back in the "day" and it was instant blood rush to my brain. This song filled my heart with so much. It was my mantra! Thanks for posting!
I haven't listened to this album since 1997 when it got stolen out of my school ruck sack at high school - but I've never forgotten this song. Finally I've got round to finding it tonight :)
This song is so good. If your reading this comment then your listening to it. If your listening to it smile, because your experiencing something special, which many people will not have the good fortune to stumble across, or much worse the abilty to appreciate
so hard to choose a favorite of this amazing album, but i'd have to say this is mine. hard decision though. verve, please reform and give us some more of this greatness!
i listened to this album alot years back really helped me with my depression is funny how songs can help u thru bad bad times but i think ashcroft knew what to write and song to trigger off those emotions and himself suffereing with mental depression think he knew how certai people would feel so powerful and emotional this has a special place in my heart!!
takes me back to driving my old 205gti with the sunroof rolled back in the sun with this on repeat. good frickin times. always makes me think of sunny summer afternoons.
Every year I read the last 100 lines of Dante's Paradiso (where he enters heaven) to my students and this song always springs to mind. Then i end up choking tears of joy on the last few lines and my students think I'm a soft git. Maybe next year I'll play this in the background - see how THEY like that chicken soup for the soul! Cracking song.
Amazing song - the arrangements, the way it builds. This is easily my favorite song by them. Perhaps one of the best of its time. Strangely, not many people I've talked to about this group have ever paid it much mind. Uplifting stuff.
@jafrocubic I remember this album came out right before I started jr high, and this was my favorite song on the album, but now i'm 25 and my favorite one is weeping willow, but I love this one just as much.
Beautiful song. Urban Hymns is one of those classic timeless albums that speaks to people emotionally and spiritually.

Cant even sum this tune up in words, heard it the first time earlier in years and broke down.
Aways have an overwhelming feeling of sadness which for some reason turns to joy by the end of the tune.
It seems to make sense of anxiety and how we all have to learn by our mistakes,
Life is the hardest thing that were all gonna do, it might not have a happy beginning but can have a happy ending!
Richard Ashcroft is a pure Genius nothing but respect for ya Fella!
