we recently performed a multi AWD / 4WD testing @ Lancelin West Australia. Petrol (p) & Diesel (d) vehicals. Toyota Landcruiser 09, (p & d) Toyota Prado 09 (p) Nissan Patrol 09 (p), Mitsubishi Outlander 09 (p), Honda CRV 09 (p), Jeep Cher 09 (p) Subaru Forester 09 (p). Of all the tests performed, the Subaru Forester travelled further in sand, higher up sand incline tests without tyre deflation. Every single other vehicle mentioned could not match the Subaru even with deflated tires at 15 psi.
actually the Tribeca is not a real Subaru (for me) because it is made in the US for the US market. Why they don't test forester for example, or legacy? And after all the Tribeca is a SUV, the Audi is a sedan, just incomparable.
got a Justy 1993, made 115.000 km in 4 years and a half going every weekend skiing in Chile (we have real 4x4 road!!), terrible winters with mud, rain and close to the sea (this car beat Montero, Toyota and many other 4x4 in reaching my favorite ski station). Got a Subaru Impreza 2004, GX 2.0, made 110.000 km same conditions and now a Subaru Impreza Outback 2006 2.5, made 48.000 km, no motor rebuilds, no electrical problems, no NOTHING EVER!! Best Car always!!
@TheJoePepper Yea what? Subaru have won many Rally events and unlike other brands, shitloads of people who are Subaru owners show actual passion towards the brand unlike people with Fords, Hondas, Mazdas... You talk to a owner of a Subaru and 99% are in love with them. (Not sexually though..)
@Matty231 Not sure what "yea what?" means. Did you mean "so what"? Of course people are passionate about Fords and Hondas, and even Mazdas. People usually back up their choices even if they are the wrong ones. I've talked to a whole family of Subaru owners and they like them, but they aren't in love with them! lol. Besides, some of the most unreliable brands have a loyal following.
whatever fools I'm a Subaru Certified tech and have been a mechanic for my whole life. audi is the ones with shitey computers. your an idiot if you think subarus are a bad car. Fords are bad cars lol
I'd agree with the ford being shitty car, but on the other hand, I say you are a complete moron for calling Auid's with bad ECU's. Not once, did I have to do any physical repairs to the ECU. Yes,I did re-soder the connections on my NINETY SIX auid. Yes, that is a 9 and a six, and my car went through salt water, had the first cylinder flooded, had the timing belt rip. Guess how much repairs I had to do to the engine. 0. Did not have to replace gaskets, valves or anything else. Yet to see a subaru
in terms of overall reliability and convenience audi can barely hold a candle to subaru.if you've worked on both cars you'd know subaru is a much more intelligently designed car.
i just bet man.how long does it take you to swap out your fuel pump huh? 2,3 hours minimum? also how much are audi parts in contrast to subie?!?! expensive! and WHAT CANT SUBIE DO!?!?! you fail to elaborate.
Well first off. Your spelling. Next, fuel pump? I actually replaced mine last week due to rust (Remember salt water damage. And under 45 minutes. It's a screw on fuel pump. Next Audi parts are much more expensive, then again, they need so much less repairs. So basically you're saying you prefer a cheap broken down car instead of a high quality and expensive car. Ok. As for Subarus? Easy, they stole Audi's design for AWD.
No. They actually use a completely different system. Failed argument. IIRC viscous coupling LSD vs the Audi's torsion biasing quattro system which is about twice the weight gain.
100 pound gain. Well played. Suabrus system is 300 pounds while a quattro system is 400. And whats the problem? So its heavier. It prevents spinning of the wheels before they even lift off. It transfers most of the control to the wheel with the best grip. Best part? Purely mechanical. No fuck ups. On the other hand we have the Subaru.
@EnzoFirrari2k6 What are you talking about? Torsion biasing? lol. You mean torque sensing? Torsen for short. Yes they do use a different system and yes the Torsen system is heavier but not twice as heavy.
@TheJoePepper Marc Trahan (Audi's Director of Product management and Quality): "We have had 25 years of experience in developing and applying our all-wheel drive technology. This has been demonstrated with such features as the Torsion differential, which automatically, proactively, without any electronic intervention, distributes the torque split front to rear, to match driving and traction situations.....
We will augment that further on selected sporty models with our new 40/60 Torsion differential, which will bias slightly more torque toward the rear to enhance the sporty driving experience."
- Much heavier. Much more nose heavy. (300lbs over fwd. Subaru's is 150lbs over fwd)
- "Spider Bite" windup reaction when just at the limits of traction while turning.
- Silly ABS "active differential" (yeah right, it's just brake assisted traction control) on quattro IV. I'll decide when to brake and when to accelerate, thank you.
@EnzoFirrari2k6 Most Subaru's don't have limited slip. Don't start talking STI please. Are you even familiar with Subauru's VDC? It's a clone of Audi's quattro IV as far as electronic braking is concerned, and they both prevent wheelspin. That's usually a good thing. Audi even had rear lockers in some previous versions of quattro. I really don't care about nose-heaviness. In snow it's good. I would much rather have a V6 that I didn't have to wind up to 5,000 RPM to get any usable torque.
My car makes peak torque at 3700rpms...Subaru 2.0 liter turbo... that's WITH headers designed for top end power (not low end torque. They moved the power band up from what it was before.) and a big exhaust aimed for maximum peak hp.
Peak #'s:
250whp@5750rpms
260wtq@3700rpms
Stock turbo. Stock intake.
Blouch does a 325$ upgrade to the factory TD04 turbo by swapping the compressor wheel turning it into a TD04-19t. Lowers spool RPM and increases peak flow. 300 bucks...
@EnzoFirrari2k6 Yes turbo has lower end torque, but comes on too fast to be usable in snow. I was referring to 4 cylinder NA engine, but compressor wheel looks like a good upgrade.
When you said you didn't want to have to wait till 5000 to make any torque I assumed you were talking turbo since there is no N/A Subaru that makes any torque up at that rpm lol.
The SOHC Subaru heads are a great platform for low end power. Smaller ports in the head castings for higher velocity flow at lower rpms. Makes for good low end torque on the SOHC 2.5 liter motors. If you want an N/A boxer motor with a V6 feel though, your best bet is the H6 3.0R from a Legacy.
@EnzoFirrari2k6 The 2.5's that have BHG's left and right? Yeah the NA's don't make a lot of torque but all the torque they do make is around 5k RPM. By the time you've reached that RPM your wheels have spun so much you've dug yourself a hole in the snow.
I've taken a look at that H6. Too bad it's on such a heavy car though. I've seen some transplants to lighter chassis though.

Audi 90. For the failure you're looking at the bad copy of Audis AWD. You're also looking at the really bad creation of Subarus ECU's. Have a shit load of customers who want the diagnosed or fixed and I can't do jack shit with them. Haven't seen a subaru last more than 5.
you havent seen a subaru that lasted more than 5 years? are you kidding?subaru stole audis ecu design? are you a subaru tech that people ask you to get their ecu diagnosed or fixed? are you a tuner or a mechanic? sorry for the questions.. i just wanna know what you do in relation to what you just posted.
Good for you. So how many engines did you have to change? 5? How many times did your ECU fail on you? With a random code popping up "Internal malfunction"?
ive never heard of any ECU problems on Subarus, mines never flashed a CEL before. both my cars lost the head gaskets at 220-250k miles, thats the only work ive done to the motors is replace the gaskets and one needed an alternator.
2002 WRX wagon 125,000 miles (fairly heavily modified, stock internals. 100hp/tq over stock - only the plastic radiator has failed...replaced with mishimoto for 250$)
2001 Impreza RS 120,000 miles
1996 Legacy 195,000 miles
These are all the Subaru's in my family. None of these cars have had to have motor rebuilds, ECU issues...or transmission problems.
Oh and my buddy traded in his S4 for an 04 STI...never been happier. Audi 6 speeds are CRAP. Absolute CRAP. Upgrades are astronomically expensive as well as repairs.
STI doesn't carry any of those problems. One of the strongest trannys. 600hp capable.
Had an 01 S4. Exactly as you describe the sti as. Guess what you're just prejudiced against audis. Oh well, can't use any logic to you might as well not even try. Cya kid.
I actually really like Audi's. Despite human nature I am not just saying this to prove you "wrong". I am doing it to clarify, as you most definitely misunderstood the purpose of my comment. My purpose was to display a sample coming from a tech at an import repair shop whose family has possessed many Subarus without issue. If they are soooo bad how did we get 5 over 100k no problem...?
@WRC555P1 Looks like you lucked out and missed the 2.5 engine's infamous head gasket problems. I wouldn't be surprised if you are ignoring/avoiding the oil leaks that those older subarus are known for too. Don't get me wrong, they are great cars, but your empirical evidence doesn't line up with the reliability statistics.
@WRC555P1 And who is reliable? Well....vw diesel engine are probably the most long lasting engine ever build. My oncle has a 97 vw transporter with a 2.4l 5cylinder diesel non-turbo and he has more or less 600,000 miles on it, it never have been rebuild and it still run great. He is not the only one with similar milage on a transproter diesel. My 02 jetta tdi have 240,000 miles on it anyway im just saying its not because you love a car brand that it is the best in any way.
No...they fucking didn't. The systems aren't even in the same category. Are you retarded or are you just alive to complain about things that don't exist?
Good game kid. Yet again, another fucking hypocrite. Reason why I got thumbs down? I said the truth about Subarus, and people get ticked off by that. Oh well. Don't care. Too bad you can't even spell Ferrari even :).
People who haven't driven Audis just don't understand the world of comfort difference. Audi, unlike Sub, doesn't trade luxury for excellent AWD. They give you both. And of course they're expensive. You get an expensive car and when not everyone in the goddamn world owns one, its just how it goes. It keeps their name respectable and keeps the average idiots out of their field. Just telling it like it is.
That, and most Sub fans i have found are liable to believe anything Sub says, such as, in summary, "symmetrical AWD is superior to any other on grounds of being symmetrical". The fact is, both systems are nearly exactly as good as the other.
Audi tunes their cars for a more comfortable ride and less offroad, because that is their customer market.
Subaru tunes theirs for people who are going to offroad some and who are generally going to beat the hell out of their cars.
well ....you put the factor price....so that change the conversation.....best price value??????..it is clear that in this issue , Subaru win to any other car.
@Sobreviviente08 Actually only recently has Subaru copied Audi enough that you can say their AWD systems are kind of similar. They now use VDC, part of which uses braking to counteract the open-diff problem. This is similar to EDL that Audi has been using since '95. Also, a Torsen differential is faster-reacting and more reliable than what Subaru uses. It does cost and weigh more though. Audi used to have a manual push-button differential lock that was great but they don't have it anymore.
@TheJoePepper - you are right - Audi got rid of the mechanical locks - because even though they are great for off-road... the weight makes the handling on road suffer... and since they wanted to make sporty cars they had to compromise. That said - Audi is moving away from Torsen... they now have a self-locking differential with torque vectoring. They say it is more compact and weighs a little less... but is still fully mechanical in the center so it reacts just as fast.
Subarus don't drive so well becacause of perfect weight distribution and low centre of gravity. The problem with majority of cars is that they have 60/40 or even 70/30 FR weight distribution which make them handle like huge pendulum it's especially noticable with heavy diesel engies.
Well biggest main reason engine is getting bigger n bigger. I agree avg 50/50 is great. alot of FF cars is 70/30 witch help weight for tha FF wheels. FR needs at be at less 55/45 to make perfect balance. AWD i doubt i need to be any ratio sence at less 3/4 wheel spinning. Alot of other company none subaru, most of time 2/4 wheel will spin but 2/3 wheel is sliding. a Full on AWD will hurt front wheel when turnning on dry road thus FF cars has 1.5 LSD. Its suck on snow sence 1 wheel b spinning.
@Marine475 I own 3 subaru AWD and a Volvo AWD and you couldn't be more wrong about the Subaru handling, all my subaru's drive circles around all my other cars (10 total) and my favorite has 250K on it and the engine is perfect still. I'm selling the volvo and I'm a subaru man from now on!
Hey man my computer ate part of the sentence I wrote and changed the whole meaning of it my point was that Subarus drive so well because of perfect weight distribution and low centre of gravity not the 4wd. Well balanced chassis makes all the difference. If you make 50/50 rwd car it will still handle beautifully on the other hand take a look at Audis they're excellent cars but due to engine placement they understeer horribly in every corner
While I agree with your comments I don't agree about the AWD. I own a lot of cars and 4 are AWD and and the Subaru that isn't won't handle a corner like the AWD version. Low CG is a big part of it I agree. Under-steer is NOT a function of engine placement it's a function of camber tuning etc.
marine475 - newer audi's don't understeer as much. Drive a brand new A4/S4 (the platform all the cars are switching too) and you'll see that unless you do something crazy - the car tracks neutrally. The differential has been moved to make it more balanced fron to rear (though not 50/50) Also - the AWD is defaulted 40:60 and can get to 15:85 in acceleration and cornering which reduces understeer more. I haven't experienced the sport differential yet - but I hear it makes it even more neutral.
Remember AWD, assist, traction etc.. Only handles the wheels and driving. WINTER tires does all the difference. These vehicles are compared with almost less difference on snow. they all have common driving abilities. Compare them on summer or all season is best. You can measure speed, power, slip, breaking and all other stuff with accuracy. Winter tires should be included on this video as to how the vehicles would respond with winter tires installed.
Sorry to say RRT3am i've got the two best examples of quattro past and present, and no mitsubishi i've ever seen can hang with me, esp not in bad weather. i do have respect for the subarus
Yeah, the Evo's got a Torque Vectoring Diff at the back, the STi too....And, let me think about it...the Audi S4 and the S5 got them too...Soo...It's just the same kind of AWD in the Audis and the subaru...yeah, come on, tell us sth. about the symmetric AWD...Subaru has got a good AWD System...but the Evo System with transversely planted engine sucks, every AWD System with transversely planted engines sucks!
You think you know sth. about AWD? Tell me, what kind of Quattro has the Audi A6, the Q7, the A4, A5 and the A8? Yeah, they got a mechanical differential (Torsen Differential - TORque SENsing) in the middle...The A3, the TT and the small Audis with transversely planted Engines have got a Haldex Differential, which is controlled by Electronic...So, now shut the fuck up and don't tell some shit about quattro, understood? Loser!
@Moe180186 : When you get an idea of what am I talking about, then I can waste time to talk to you ... Torsen in the middle ... but EDL at axles ... so? Do you get the difference to Evo's or STi's system? If not ... then I would say you testdrive since it seems, you learned not enough from your books, mr Engineer (or maybe wanna be?) ... now jump to wikipedia to find the differences ...
Lol , such "tests" are so "neutral" ... Audi's Quattro suxx as AWD system nowadays, too bad they rely only on electronics .. Subaru & Mitsubishi on the other hand have great AWD. Too bad Audi is not the leader in their own invention .... They might be better as style, expensive materials etc, but in AWD they ain't the hit anymore ...
"Audi quattro sux and Mitsubishi has a great AWD" ok, i've had my laugh for the day! No other manufacturer can top Audi's quattro, although Subaru has a quality awd system. Audi is king, hands down.
I hope you do not drive one at snowy roads in winter ... or you wont laugh that much. Quattro was great years ago, now it uses only electronics and suxx, no matter if you agree or not. And yes, Evos have much better AWD than Audis atm, so does Subaru ... No one manufacturer can top Audi's Quattro ... now that was a good one ... haha, take off the glasses and open your eyes ...
I've got my A6 avant and have been more than happy with her performance in the 3 and 1/2 years of ownership. Hasn't let me down once in that time, and i know of many others who swear by quattro over anything else. And, my eyes are wide open!!!
Hey says that Audis V6 engine is great and that the 4wd is slightly better then the Volvo V50, BUT at a higher cost but more funnier then the Volvo V50.
Come on, everybody knows that Subaru has the best traction system by far.... I use to buy Volvo for safety, but today Subaru is as safe as Volvo, but with much more control while driving, so Subaru is my Car today
i'm totally agree with the dudes :)

actually the Tribeca is not a real Subaru (for me) because it is made in the US for the US market. Why they don't test forester for example, or legacy? And after all the Tribeca is a SUV, the Audi is a sedan, just incomparable.

Fuck Audi, Subaru has a true rally-crafted AWD system. Subaru's are the best no question.

@Matty231 Do you even know the history of AWD in rallying? Give credit where it's due.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago
@TheJoePepper Yea what? Subaru have won many Rally events and unlike other brands, shitloads of people who are Subaru owners show actual passion towards the brand unlike people with Fords, Hondas, Mazdas... You talk to a owner of a Subaru and 99% are in love with them. (Not sexually though..)
Matty231 1 year ago
@Matty231 Not sure what "yea what?" means. Did you mean "so what"? Of course people are passionate about Fords and Hondas, and even Mazdas. People usually back up their choices even if they are the wrong ones. I've talked to a whole family of Subaru owners and they like them, but they aren't in love with them! lol. Besides, some of the most unreliable brands have a loyal following.

Considering I worked with both cars and own an audi, Subaru cannot do jack shit. Literally. At all. Even compared to a Audi 90. (I have a 96 2.8)
DievansTheory 1 year ago
i just bet man.how long does it take you to swap out your fuel pump huh? 2,3 hours minimum? also how much are audi parts in contrast to subie?!?! expensive! and WHAT CANT SUBIE DO!?!?! you fail to elaborate.
markcball 1 year ago
Well first off. Your spelling. Next, fuel pump? I actually replaced mine last week due to rust (Remember salt water damage. And under 45 minutes. It's a screw on fuel pump. Next Audi parts are much more expensive, then again, they need so much less repairs. So basically you're saying you prefer a cheap broken down car instead of a high quality and expensive car. Ok. As for Subarus? Easy, they stole Audi's design for AWD.
DievansTheory 1 year ago
No. They actually use a completely different system. Failed argument. IIRC viscous coupling LSD vs the Audi's torsion biasing quattro system which is about twice the weight gain.
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago 4
100 pound gain. Well played. Suabrus system is 300 pounds while a quattro system is 400. And whats the problem? So its heavier. It prevents spinning of the wheels before they even lift off. It transfers most of the control to the wheel with the best grip. Best part? Purely mechanical. No fuck ups. On the other hand we have the Subaru.
DievansTheory 1 year ago
@EnzoFirrari2k6 What are you talking about? Torsion biasing? lol. You mean torque sensing? Torsen for short. Yes they do use a different system and yes the Torsen system is heavier but not twice as heavy.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago
@TheJoePepper Marc Trahan (Audi's Director of Product management and Quality): "We have had 25 years of experience in developing and applying our all-wheel drive technology. This has been demonstrated with such features as the Torsion differential, which automatically, proactively, without any electronic intervention, distributes the torque split front to rear, to match driving and traction situations.....
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago
We will augment that further on selected sporty models with our new 40/60 Torsion differential, which will bias slightly more torque toward the rear to enhance the sporty driving experience."
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago
@EnzoFirrari2k6 No such thing as torsion differential. It's Torsen which is a brand name, which is short for torque-sensing. But the rest is right.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago
@TheJoePepper

@TheJoePepper
A few Audi disadvantages include:
- No limited slip when off throttle.
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago
@EnzoFirrari2k6 Most Subaru's don't have limited slip. Don't start talking STI please. Are you even familiar with Subauru's VDC? It's a clone of Audi's quattro IV as far as electronic braking is concerned, and they both prevent wheelspin. That's usually a good thing. Audi even had rear lockers in some previous versions of quattro. I really don't care about nose-heaviness. In snow it's good. I would much rather have a V6 that I didn't have to wind up to 5,000 RPM to get any usable torque.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago
@TheJoePepper
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago
@EnzoFirrari2k6 Yes turbo has lower end torque, but comes on too fast to be usable in snow. I was referring to 4 cylinder NA engine, but compressor wheel looks like a good upgrade.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago
@TheJoePepper
EnzoFirrari2k6 1 year ago
@EnzoFirrari2k6 The 2.5's that have BHG's left and right? Yeah the NA's don't make a lot of torque but all the torque they do make is around 5k RPM. By the time you've reached that RPM your wheels have spun so much you've dug yourself a hole in the snow.
I've taken a look at that H6. Too bad it's on such a heavy car though. I've seen some transplants to lighter chassis though.

Only ECU issue was with a HONDA del sol...

@WRC555P1 And who is reliable? Well....vw diesel engine are probably the most long lasting engine ever build. DievansTheory 1 year ago
Sobreviviente08 1 year ago
That, and most Sub fans i have found are liable to believe anything Sub says, such as, in summary, "symmetrical AWD is superior to any other on grounds of being symmetrical". The fact is, both systems are nearly exactly as good as the other.
Audi tunes their cars for a more comfortable ride and less offroad, because that is their customer market.
Subaru tunes theirs for people who are going to offroad some and who are generally going to beat the hell out of their cars.
Chill the fuck out guys.
Sobreviviente08 1 year ago
well ....you put the factor price....so that change the conversation.....best price value??????..it is clear that in this issue , Subaru win to any other car.
julioigna71 1 year ago
@Sobreviviente08 Actually only recently has Subaru copied Audi enough that you can say their AWD systems are kind of similar. They now use VDC, part of which uses braking to counteract the open-diff problem. This is similar to EDL that Audi has been using since '95. Also, a Torsen differential is faster-reacting and more reliable than what Subaru uses. It does cost and weigh more though. Audi used to have a manual push-button differential lock that was great but they don't have it anymore.
TheJoePepper 1 year ago

Marine475 2 years ago
Well biggest main reason engine is getting bigger n bigger. I agree avg 50/50 is great. alot of FF cars is 70/30 witch help weight for tha FF wheels. FR needs at be at less 55/45 to make perfect balance. AWD i doubt i need to be any ratio sence at less 3/4 wheel spinning. Alot of other company none subaru, most of time 2/4 wheel will spin but 2/3 wheel is sliding. a Full on AWD will hurt front wheel when turnning on dry road thus FF cars has 1.5 LSD. Its suck on snow sence 1 wheel b spinning.
truehunter 2 years ago
@Marine475 I own 3 subaru AWD and a Volvo AWD and you couldn't be more wrong about the Subaru handling, all my subaru's drive circles around all my other cars (10 total) and my favorite has 250K on it and the engine is perfect still. I'm selling the volvo and I'm a subaru man from now on!
stupidrussia 2 years ago
Hey man my computer ate part of the sentence I wrote and changed the whole meaning of it my point was that Subarus drive so well because of perfect weight distribution and low centre of gravity not the 4wd. Well balanced chassis makes all the difference. If you make 50/50 rwd car it will still handle beautifully on the other hand take a look at Audis they're excellent cars but due to engine placement they understeer horribly in every corner
Marine475 2 years ago
While I agree with your comments I don't agree about the AWD. I own a lot of cars and 4 are AWD and and the Subaru that isn't won't handle a corner like the AWD version. Low CG is a big part of it I agree. Under-steer is NOT a function of engine placement it's a function of camber tuning etc.
stupidrussia 2 years ago
marine475 - newer audi's don't understeer as much.
