I love this, it's one of my favorites by Colin Moulding. Is there any chance anyone has the demo version that they could post or pass along? This song and Don't Hurt A Bit (never heard the demo of that one either) are like brother and sister tunes. What a great band.
Does anybody happen to know where I could find Colin's song "Find the Fox"? I just heard it on my copy of Coat of Many Cupboards, and it really surprised me. (Seemed to belong on Jethro Tull's Heavy Horses rather than in the dregs of XTC's vault.) Didn't make it to an album or even past demo did it? Eh, if anyone has any more info, I'd appreciate it.
I thank you sir! Thanks to your video, I yanked this off Itunes and it is WONDERFUL! My smile is neverending.:) I miss these guys tremendously. Threw down a few beers with Dave Gregory a couple years ago...what a nice, nice guy. Thanks again, lokrume!
This is from a rehearsal in Andy's shed some time before they started to record Nonsuch. And it was recorded from July to October 1991. (Released April -92).
Colin's songs lay me out -never heard a bad one. Does anyone know the date and sessions this song was from?!! Why the hell did they keep this canned?!! -They look pretty young in the vid -Maybe from the mid-early 90s? -They still had to acomodate the LP format Perhaps it simply wouldn't fit?
And why the hell does only iTunes have this -in only 128KBPS?!! It's the only 128KBPS iTunes I have ever purchased.
War Dance is an annoying song although I do love it. NonSuch never got much of a going over when the back catalogue was re-released. Shame because this track would have been loved by so many more if it was included on the disk.
Ehhhh, I relate a lot more to the sentiment of "..Ordinary People" (feeling like you don't belong in your neighborhood, paranoia, your town changing right under your feet and making you alienated), then "War Dance" (a vague, sentiment about war and that...war is bad. duh.) Also "...ordinary people" is catchier, and War Dance never did much for me musically. As XTC say, the clarinet in it sounds like "a singing penis"
you're right this song is a gem. I take the lyrics to mean that his neighborhood has been gentrified and he doesn't relate to the new neighbors. For that matter, they aren't even interested in getting to know each other. Living in L.A., I can relate to that.
oh...arent they just great!!

Even in a shed with no frills, amazing. Love them. I wonder what Andy was thinking about, he seems distracted.

He's thinking, "Colin's writing is getting better, I must stop him!"

Is the guy with the tambourine Dave Mattacks ?
sebastianrueger 4 years ago
No, it's the man himself, Andy Partridge.
lokrume04 4 years ago
But ..isn´t that Andy with the guitar in the beginning? Has he a double persona?
sebastianrueger 4 years ago
If you look carefully you can see that there is two different sequences. AP with the guitar and then AP with the
tambourine.

Why wasn't this included in Nonsuch? It could've been the second part to "Respectable Street".

rehearsing for nonsuch eh? If this and "Didn't Hurt A Bit" were on it instead of Wardance and Smartest Monkeys, Colin would have owned that record.
