Thanks for an excellent video. I've been noticing lately my chocolate lab has been stinking up my house with a really strong "dog smell." It reminds me of the smell of Fritos but much stronger. After doing a little research online, lo and behold, the smell is coming solely from my dog's ears. He isn't acting like it's infected and I don't see any discharge. In fact, it looks very clean. Is this a yeast infection? What kind of ear wash should I buy? Is a diet change in order?
@VenisonFajitas Great questions. Many infections are deep and not visualized without an otoscope. Food or environmental allergies can play a role. Please contact your veterinarian for an exam to look into the ears. Bad dental tartar can also make the head smell.
Ok so i have a cocker spaniel and he has this black ear wax stuff in his ears and his ears smell pretty bad both of them and i usually clean it out with a q tip after i give him his daily shower if i take some video or pictures can u please maybe tell me what u think it might be ?
@Mattoboy100 Yea it went away i guess he got a check up and i guess he was cloged up from eating peanut butter LOL and they squised some juice out from his butt and he has been doing better but i dnt kno if that has anything to do with it
l have 2 adult Chihuahuas that have some crusty buildup around the tips of the inside of their ears. The ears do not smell and the don't scratch them nor do the get upset when I touch these areas. What do I need to do? Thank you.
oh icaan ou guys make a video about removing the hair from your dogs ear because i heard if you don't dio that every so often i heard your dog can go deaf can someone help out :(
I have a baby lab-3 months old and I went to the vet a few days ago. They told me he has an ear infection and gave me a solution to clean his ears with but he freaks whenever he sees it. Two of us tried restraining him while the third poured the solution down but he squirms so much its almost impossible to get it in without squirting it on one of us. Any suggestions? Chew toys and treats don't do much good with him. :(
@IceQeen1011 So sorry to hear that. The Veterinarian may suggest sedation at the vet hospital for a thorough cleaning. There are injectable and oral antibiotics if bacteria, there are oral anti-yeast pills if yeast infection present. Also, there are once a day meds which may help get through this important treatment. Have vet confirm infection is gone before stopping treatment. Please discuss with your own vet for final advice.
@IceQeen1011 you walk up from behind him well someone or he is distracted and and dont let him see the bottle and grab the dogs ears and start to pour it in and then massage
My baby (well, 2 months) chihuahua has some wax build up in her ear, it isn't THAT far down, but I'm worried that it will start bothering her or turn into mites if I don't clean her ear. The problem is, she's so tiny! she's about 5inches tall and 9 inches long, I mean she's a teacup chihuahua xD Thank you very much for this tutorial, I'm gonna go try to clean her little ears now~
I want to get a basset hound but im scared because what if im cleaning its ears with the cleaning liquid and i dont know how much to put and i put to much will it get an ear infection?
My dog is a Shih tzu (4 years old - 28 yrs in dog yrs) and he has this really bad ear infection. I don't know what kind it is because my family can't afford to go to a vet. i look into his left ear and he has dark wax build up. He shakes his head a lot, and he also rubs his ear on our couches and whimpers while he does that. I'm not sure what to do, and I was wondering what you guys would do. Any advice? Tips would be nice. Thank you!(:
@BeckoLoveless Sounds like a painful infection. Look for add in local paper or online for a free initial exam. Many veterinarians offer coupons for new clients. Your dog likely needs medical attention.
Do you teach bout cat ? : Awww , giving the cats some food and the curry falls right on the cat's eye and fyi ,the at has some infection on the eye . Imagine curry falls in your eye , Ouch ! What to do?
My bull terrier is 14 years old, he has had ear infections through his life and he is now completely deaf. My vet told me, every time, to use q-tips to clean deep into his ear canal. After seeing this video, I'm worried that I, or the vet, has caused more damage. I was also been told to use diluted white vinegar to clean his ears, is this ok? She once prescribed canaural, but charged £180 (about $300) for this. I do not drive and can't get to another vet. Any tips welcome for my old friend.
@ChannelEden At 14 yrs old, it may be a normal aging process resulting in becoming deaf. The q-tips can be a problem if your pet jumps and you injure the ear drum. Vinegar and water should be safe. You probably did not do anything wrong.
@ChannelEden you must take your dog to the veterinarian to figure out what type of infection, ie bacterial, yeast, mites, etc. Only your veterinarian can prescribe the appropriate medication. He or She can also prescribe a cleaner that is most effective for the type of maintainance for your pet.
While this is helpful, I don't have a partner to hold my dogs head while I attempt to clean her ears. How do you guys restrain the head so she doesn't move? I tried using my arm but she wiggles out! Blargh!
@britchesiscool This is not always easy for some pets. Try a chew toy or a treat when you start. Possibly try when your dog just wakes up. You may have to ask a neighbor to help.
@britchesiscool Mine didn't like it at first but i persisted and when he was trying to get away i would gently bring him back and keep on touching his ears with some cotton and cleaning solution; when he'd be still for a moment i'd actually go away - so he figured that to get rid of me he would have to be still for a moment.
I didn't start with cleaning right away, i used just touch his ears and slowly build up to actually cleaning. Treats helped later, in the beginning it was no use^^
Thanks for the reply. The 70% alcholo is actually that's what one vet recommended (even in times of ear infection), though another has recommended a commercial solution. Is there another product you would recommend for a Golden Retriever that requires frequent ear cleaning?
Any gentle cleaner for routine cleaning. If your Golden Ret. requirs frequent cleaning, your veterinarian may want to perform a cytology and/or culture to determine the type of medication and cleaner. There are different types of cleaners if yeast or bacteria are present. Also, ALLERGIES are one of the most common reasons dogs get reoccuring infections. Check with your veterinarian.
Absolutely useful. We have two brown Labs; they cannot resist taking a plunch every now and then and believe me, sometimes the water is everything but clean. Is it necessary to clean their ears after each swimming? Is there nor something as 'over cleaning' the ear, resulting in irritation because of the solution we are using?
Glad you like the video. yes, overcleaning can disrupt the ears protective layer. Always best to call your veterinarian for specific recommendations for your pet.
my dog has all the characteristics you said about ear infection, but he doesnt let me clean his ears, and he gets very angry if i try to put ear drops that the veterinarian recommended to me.
what if you put to much down his ear? what happens?

@keylockkid The black wax needs to be examined under a microscope to determine what type of infection and the proper treatment.

@VetVid ok so do u kno if that will cost money ? And if so how much would u think ?

@keylockkid The cost will vary by your area. Your local vet will know.

AnnieNom 2 years ago
No, I would not use that high alcohol as it can be irritating to the canal. Use a gentle ear cleanser for routine cleaning or ask your veterinarain.
