Okay, I know Ryan doesn't like to be chained to the "alt-country" genre and/or label, but it's stuff like this shows that even though he doesn't really consider himself an alt-country musician anymore, the feel is still there. You can take a boy out of the Carolinas, but you can't take the Carolinas out of the boy!
@CEIVE4EVER Good point. I should say, however, that I realize from the get-go that Ryan will never be chained to the "alt-country" genre because he wants to follow his own muse. Consequently, you have wonderful albums such as Love Is Hell. My point was that even though he may dabble in other genres, a song such as this shows that his musical roots/foundation will always be based somewhat in the country/alt-country world.
maybe because it's more commercial and that's why you guys prefer Bono and that woman that was in a band long ago but has done nothing for years version better??? I prefer real performers with grit myself. But each to their own
It pisses me off when some ignorant dumbass starts saying that one singer/band is better than another. No one is performing or wrote the song for you. They are just doing what they love and were meant to do and neither they nor I give a crap who you think is better. I didn't search for their version. I searched for this one, by the originator.
The theme of my junior prom was "When the Stars Go Blue." They played dbag Tim McGraw's version. I was pissed. If ever there was an "epic fail," that would most certainly be it.
People that must not be named *Cough* The Corrs *Cough* Tim McGraw *Cough cough* shouldn't be even be compared Ryan's version...... This very well may be one of my all time favourite songs
I think this is the best version of this...honestly, i think the album version from Gold is horribly mixed. i love the alternate ending and a performance of this quality is very rare.

Ryan Adams is actually really, really funny in person...I don't understand why that makes his music have less depth. Does he have to be serious ALL the time for you to consider him a worthy singer/songwriter?
Ryan Adams wrote the damned song. How you people say Tim McGraw's version is better? That's like saying Lief Garrett sang the Beach Boys songs better than the Beach Boys.
@lilfriedrich I guess you're the type with two teeth and an "I Love Beer And Nascar" bumper sticker on your rusted out '86 piece-of-shit Ranger, huh? Yeah, I know your type. My shitty hometown is full of people like you. Your sister probably had your kid too.

best performed by ryan. he says off the wall crazy things and then turns it off instantly to sing this beautiful song, and then turns it right back on.
This is a beautiful song. I think those that are bashing Tim McGraw (btw, I like the original better) should ease up a bit. Often when a talented, but not well-known artist has their song covered by someone famous, the benefits trickle down. This is the case with my liking of Tim McGraw's version leading me to discover Ryan Adams. I'm not about to go buy any of McGraw's albums, but just purchased a few of Adam's and Whiskeytown's records.
I like both versions! Ryan is a talented songwriter which is obvious by the fact that Tim McGraw covered it. There is nothing wrong with either version.

Wrong. Tim McGraw doesn't have the talent or ability that Ryan Adams has in a pinky. And, as is the case most of the time, McGraw didn't do the original any sort of justice, no matter what the mainstream radio/media etc. tell you.
tim mcgraw's verision isn't horrible, BUT Ryans is much better because he wrote the lyrics and has an emotion tie to the song because it is HIS song. Thats why his is better.

Bethany Joy Lenz and Tyler Hilton sing it the best out of Ryan Adams and Tim McGraw. :) Check Bethany and Tyler out.
