Please post the version from Summer Days and Summer Nights. I've just found snippets of that one. For some reason it's hard to find the whole song fr SDASN.
@Mozart1220 I guess in terms of that if I would have done this everybody would say "man, that's messed up." But since Brian did it, it's supposed to be awesome. Brian has done some awesome stuff, and this isn't all that awesome. Brian was in bad shape during this period. Glad he got straightened out.
Usually when I see videos of musicians, I get annoyed if it just shows their faces-in this case, I could watch Brian Wilson's face all day, his facial expressions are priceless. Even if you didn't know anything about him, you would say, based on his expressions, "man, this is a pretty complex guy, what's going on in his head?"
Ha, that was funny. I agree, considering Brian's mental state, just love the fact that this video shows him laughing with his brothers, but agree he looks like a kid when he messed up :-(
On the other hand you could see how sad Brian is in his eyes. When looks up after he sings badly, he looks like a child when they know they've messed up :(
my birth dad was abusive too but he was caught when i was little he died in 2005 this song reminds me of when i was 15 while in fostercare my foster dad grounds me and threatens to board up my windows if i wouldnt stop looking out the window yelling at me hes like if u dont stop looking out the wondow i'll slap your wondows with dry wall amd u wont have a window anymore i know now he didnt mean it he was just angry
They're sure having a lotta fun here! I cracked when Brian started coughing and improvised words about that until the three laughed about it. They must have really loved each other. This performance is both a crowning moment of heartwarming and funny. Plus, how many performances are there with the Wilson brothers alone, without Al, Mike and Bruce?
The only sad thing is that by the mid-70's Brian had already lost his voice, but still, this video is as cool as cool can be
Just three brothers, enjoying life. It's sad they had to be in this state, yes, but that doesn't change the fact that they must've had a lot of fun with this.
This is BRILLIANT!!! Carl & Dennis start off singing so seriously, then collapse at Brian's coughing. I laughed at the lyrics, when Brian sings "I wish I could see outside, but he tacked a board to my window" and his brothers sing "Gosh it's dark" Absolutely classic, but more than a tad of truth in it??
I like how Brian laughs during the growing a beard line. The bearded look didn't quite suit Brian. But Carl and Dennis had two awesome beards in the 70s.
This was part of a 1 hour documentary on NBC, I believe......had some great concert footage. Also the now famous scene with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd posing as police, "arresting" Brian at his home and forcing him to go to the beach and into the ocean to surf - in his bathrobe.
This video isnt sad. Especially in light of the fact that Brian is doing so well today. And fuck anybody who says his brothers were exploiting him. You cant always fix or even understand someone elses problem. What is sad is that Carl and Dennis arent alive.
brian looks like he wants to kim himself right there, the only thing really missing is them snorting crazy fucking lines of cocaine off of that piano, because if u think they weren't,your living in a fantasy world,
It's wondeful to see all three brother together. So different, but all beatiful. And you can't realy say, which of them you love more! Dennis beatiful dreamer, man with a very very big heart, Carl's voice like an angel and Brian is genius too, who gave us very magic music, that I never heard in my life before.
I agree. This is sad. This isn't 3 brothers hanging out having fun as someone suggested. This is a mentally and physically deteriorating Brian Wilson being dragged into the studio because the other members of the band treated him like a cash cow. Including his brothers.
If his band mates truly cared for him, they wouldn't have signed recording contracts with the stipulation that Brian would have to write and produce 70% of the material. They all knew he needed help. And this was not helping.
@iferraro ... haa, he DID, didn't he! lol... wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't pointed it out... that's awesome.... just regular guys, man... I love it.
i guess Brian's voice has held up relatively well since 76. i actually kinda dig his voice more now than then. sigh. bad stuff must have gone down between 71-76.
You mean Brian intentionally destroying his voice with cocaine and smoking large amounts of cigarettes in that time in an effort to make his voice more "masculine"? Yep. It's very, very sad.
MoonAharshMistress That is true his dad did hit him hard and he is deaf in one ear.
His dad was a crazyass! by the grace of God do we still have Brian! He is such a legend! His dad SOLD his songs behind his back! no wonder he locked himself in his room and did booger suger.
Just remember in '76/'77 they took this guy who'd been hiding out and smoking, and snorting for pretty much four years straight, and DRAGGED him into the spotlight and put him on the cover of every magazine and every TV show around, and told him "OK, let's act like its 1963!!!!"
This is on the DVD "Good Vibrations Tour" and the best piece in it!!! So funny seeing Brian in his training suit with his brothers performing this! Watching Brian acting spontaneusly is such a thrill!
This video is a HOOT!!! They must have been high or something - especially Brian. I'm sitting here laughing myself silly! It's great to see them cut up like that about their Dad. I know he was abusive and all, but that's what kids do later on when they're grown up - they can joke about it.
from the time this was originally recorded in the 60's until this point in the 1970's this song took on an entirely different meaning. it went from being humorous to being tragic. it is amazing that brian was still able to express his emotions about his father at all any longer much less still find humor in such tragedy.
steely, this does not blow. this is actually on an album and following the Beach boys and Brian as I have since 1961 and being inspired by his genius ability to create notes that are not even on the piano (as paul Mcartney once said) this a great video and a classic at that. the beginning of drug and alcohol abuse for Brian Wilson and OH by the way he's back better than ever.
I love Brian as well. I've seen him live on the Pet sounds tour. I am not a hater, however, I guess I have some repressed anger that he just pretty much ended up doing drugs and hiding in his room except for moments of brilliance when he decided to go down to the studio and do something like "til I die" or "sail on sailor". I'm just pissed off that (you must admit) he is a shadow of the man and talent he once was during let's say Pet Sounds or the recording of SMiLE. He just kinda gave up. :(
That's not fair. The guy is mentally ill. He didn't "give up", his illness got the best of him. Faulting someone for collapsing under mental illness is about the same as faulting someone for collapsing under cancer.

I think this was a serious/possibly true song -- I think they meant what they were singing about. Did you see the video where, I believe, the father yelled at Carl for goofing off or something like that -- it was awful. My opinion only.
This is the goofiest GREAT thing I've ever seen...LoL.. the Beach Boys are awesome.. buts there's something special about watching just the Wilson Bros. do this.. you can see the childish bond between them...its so sweet.
great to see the brothers. i miss mike's low part; that made it extra hysterical on the lp. brian's look at the camera people after he starts hacking-- "should we start again from the top?"-- is funny, as is his cracking up when they get to the "beard" part.
This was part of the Brian Is Back/15 Big Ones TV special in 1976; certainly a rare clip! It was before Dennis REALLY got into addiction problems. Way kewl.
Never knew there was a video of them doing this one. On the album when this came out, for lead singer they just put "Too embarrassed." Great to see the three brothers, acting like brothers. Wonderful clip, and a funny song.
I have an airchecked interview with Brian on some obscure radio station about 1991, and when asked about that song, he giggled, and said, "too silly. That song's just too silly to talk about."

I think this was a serious/possibly true song -- I think they meant what they were singing about. Did you see the video where, I believe, the father yelled at Carl for goofing off or something like that -- it was awful. My opinion only.

This is the goofiest GREAT thing I've ever seen...LoL.. the Beach Boys are awesome.. buts there's something special about watching just the Wilson Bros. do this.. you can see the childish bond between them...its so sweet.

i'm pretty sure that at 19 seconds in the "boy" in the middle sings "blew his daaad!" and then laughs.
The coughing also rules.

That is Carl Wilson the best voice Wilson in the middle.

Awesome...3 boys...I have 3 sons...maybe they will write one about their 'momma' some day!
Payback for my calling them Huey, Dooey and Louie! or Alvin, Simon and Theodore or Moe, Larry and Curley...
If they hear this, they surely will! Payback!

great to see the brothers. i miss mike's low part; that made it extra hysterical on the lp. brian's look at the camera people after he starts hacking-- "should we start again from the top?"-- is funny, as is his cracking up when they get to the "beard" part.

What you see is the abuse that some of us have suffered.
It is amazing that even as an 9 yo I was into this tune.
It is good to see them together and laughing for this world is passing.

This was part of the Brian Is Back/15 Big Ones TV special in 1976; certainly a rare clip! It was before Dennis REALLY got into addiction problems. Way kewl.

what was dennis addicted to?
ncarolinaluv 4 years ago
Mostly cocaine and alcohol, though he danced with heroin too. Smoked a lot of pot too.

That song's just too silly to talk about."
donutbandit 4 years ago
Definitely silly. But it has a cult following!

For a moment at 1:13....they are simply brother's and everything is alright.
