@shabido why is there an assumption that this is a scientific debate? It definitely isn't; it's just ABC trying to make a dollar. The fact that Micheal Shermer picked Harris and came from the "Temple of 'Atheism'" to push some kind of political agenda with "scientism," doesnt mean Jean doesnt belong. She might be a bit quirky but that is relative, maybe it is Sam and Micheal who are the geeks. Furthermore, the title and most of the"debate's" form/content is bullshit (a BS "Nightline Faceoff").
I can't decide which would be preferable: listening to Jean Houston speak for 30 seconds or listening to someone scrape their fingernails across a chalkboard for 30 minutes.
I have a confession to make. I've watched this debate several times now, and the only reason I do so is to hear Deepak Chopra make a complete fool of himself. It comforts me in some way.
The difference here between debate team is that one side uses only a narrow, rational approach to all experience, while the other side uses every tool available to them.
@tubebooboob You can only think that in complete ignorance of the facts. Man, I know there are the idiot atheists, but all that EVER comes from the other side is incoherent nonsense, outright falsehoods, or misinformation. Good luck breaking free of the invisible shackles that bind you.

She's obviously some sort of romanticist, not a scientist. She looks at the world as some kind of poetry and shouldn't be on the same stage as Shermer and Harris. Deepak is just an asshole.
@sonykroket But I am not trying to sound smart at all. Maybe you are just noticing that I am smart, I can't help it if I was given a high IQ.... I think you need to drink some haterade before you get too tired from all your hating... that is, I am implying that as George W Bush would say, youre "a hater." I am sorry you feel bad are are too jealous of others.
@beezle13 actually sam and micheal are the ones who are working the crowd the most. maybe you arent able to recognize it because you dont want to see this truth, it doesnt change the fact that it is true though.
@kjrunia People understand what controls their hand without science all the time. They know it is they that control their hand. Similar with hand... one might describe our being using a metaphor of a hand... people, like fingers are distinguishable, yet they are part of one hand, which is distinguished from the other hand, yet it is part of one body, which is distinct from the mind, which is part of our being, which is part of the universe.... manifold reality doesnt die if one part is "lost."
@ChloeClementine1 Lol, I know what I said. I quoted Richard Dawkins. Do YOU know what I said? (I'm not siding with Dawkins, I am just pointing out what he said.)
@ChloeClementine1 Well, about that power that controls one's hand. Do you understand it without science then? If science cannot offer explanations, what is it then that makes people with pneumonia survive these days? If there is a loving god, then why does he allow disease to kill perfectly good, honest, hard working parents, leaving innocent children behind?
@ChloeClementine1 Might I ask, ignorant of what exactly? Einstein may have said that (I don't know in what context, which might be interesting to know on any occasion where quotes are being thrown into the discussion), but I care less about his psychological remarks in the media back then as I do about his math in special and general relativity and his photoelectric effect for which he rightfully won the Nobel prize. Besides, sometimes it's better to ignore intuition: our minds can be fooled!
What purpose does Jean serve in this? She adds nothing to the debate, she is more of a distraction from it. She offers nothing in response to what Sam and Micheal offer. They are talking about one thing and she is off in Lala-land speaking to zebras about how bad does the color red taste.
Sam Harris hit the nail on the head, Jean and Chopra looked like morons. I love it when religious and "spiritual" people try to lecture scientists on science, they lose before they even start talking.
Jean's speech doesn't address anything. I don't understand why she's there. She's just a huge hippy who explains everything with "Love and happiness and laughter!".
@Evasen Fine, many of the people watching this are trolls to Deepak and Jean. But the reason is that Deepak takes the genuinely strange world of quantum mechanics (non-locality, observer effects, etc.) and claims "Hey, God's in the weird ways that particles behave at the very small scale!" This is, I hope you will grant, a complete non sequitur. Whereas Jean seems to think that just because a story is beautiful, that makes it more true. Isn't the universe prettier with God? Non sequitur, again!
The woman is just talking out of her ass. Nothing to say, just like Deepak, so say so much no one can keep track of what you said, so they don't realize they didn't say anything at all. O.o
Deepak Chopra is just talking about something different than the topic, as Sam Harris pointed out. He's really talking about metaphysics, mysticism, not the idea of God as actually conceived by most people.
It's funny that the rationalists don't understand what the post-rationalists are saying, so they have to resort to insults inorder to protect their intellectual identities.
The best explanation for our interconnected relationship with the cosmos is the following: we have found DNA in meteorites.. And testing revealed adenine and guanine were present which are the two FUNDAMENTAL components of DNA called nucleobases. Specifically, CM2 meteorites. So, Yes we are connected with our cosmos scientifically, but to say some intelligent-being has done this? Well, you need empirical evidence to push for that Mr. Chopra, and you did not provide that. This life is it.
This Jean woman reminds me of my grandmother when she started to become senile... telling all kinds of pointless anecdotes that have no relevance to the conversation. That's all fine when humoring a senile old woman, but why do people the likes of Sam and Micheal waste their time in debates like this? Sam is probably the most sensible speaker I've ever heard, and the two on the other side just ramble like morons. More dangerous than morons though: morons with self confidence.
I want to shoot myself in the head everytime Jean start babbles one of her stupid stories. At least Deepak tries (very badly) to defend his position, but she thinks it's story time for kids.
How on this Earth or any other do Harris and Shremer even respond to this rubbish? Most of what they say is not even a sentence. Ignoring the fact that Houston said nothing other than her father laughed a lot and no ammount of eddible offerings will get apparitions to appear in a cupboard what the hell was Chopra talking about? That random events are actually governed by an intelligence? Based on.... what? It's the same old mystical witterings: I don't understand so God did it.
"best definition of humanity...we're the ones who can tell stories about all [other species]".
How blatantly anthropocentric. Anyone who considers themselves special and deserving of a "god" just for being human, need to leave their comfort zones and experience nature with an open mind.
I like the way Harris anticipates, and acknowledges, the avoidance of red herring conversations and focuses specifically on the topic under discussion, which is the christian god.
Also, not everyone in the world believes that things happen in a linear easy-to-define and experiment with manner. I think what many spiritualists are trying to convey is that there is an awe and mystery, beyond our limited understanding of the physical world, that is real and true and not being able to "prove" it in limited scientific ways does not disprove it either. I would say that there is just as much burden of proof on the disbelievers to disprove the existence of something bigger.
I haven't even watched the majority of this video yet, but just upon reading some of your comments and rejections, I would like to point out that just because some of you don't understand some of what Deepak and company is trying to say is not reason enough to discredit it, but should be cause for further exploration to try and understand where he is coming from.
After viewing this video, I'm convinced that your average person just wants to heaar big words and "deep meanings" that doesn't mean SHIT.. Deepak Chopra is full of shit, all of his arguments are circular and ambiguous.. and yet the sheep clap whenever he says something like (consciousness floats upwards like our determination)
Deepak embodies what I fear about woo woo people. The woo woo people express themselves in such vague terms, that, whatever science will come up with, they will always be able to say: That's exactly what we've been telling you all along, except you put it into technical formulas and then think it denies God, while in fact, it proves God almighty power and infinite something something.
science is going to get a huge update,... I'm just fascinated as to how it's going to do this! a very REAL, and NEW dimension to understanding our Universe/Reality/..(god?) I got no problem with accepting to change my View of reality, this is what SCIENCE IS ALL ABOUT BABY!
Ehh.. Deepak basically just tells us he's been reading lots of science that explains more than he can comprehend and then just says that.. scientists are jihadists because they say it as it is? So because there's no evidence for fantasy creatures they're.. conservative party-poopers who ruin all the fun for the superstitious no-brainers? Huh?
@ZeonGenesis .......Deepak is challenging you to go look up some of these things, that YOU DON'T comprehend,... it's nothing to get mad about,.... science hasn't even catergorized this,...because WHEN IT DOES,... it CHANGES the whole ball game!!,... it's coming, though ....
@sirTittytwister Did you see that in your crystal ball? Obviously, the only ones who will be able to answer the "unknowns" one day will be scientists as spiritualists will just spout some nonsense mixed with some anecdotes and poetry.
@ZeonGenesis ....no, I don't need a crystal ball, to see what's obvious,... but anyways, give yourself a chance, a genuine one, and go check some of this stuff out,...it's okay, really ...I'd ask you to trust me on this,...but I guess, you'll just have to really make an effort and inquire about this stuff on your own,....who knows, you might even come up with a "real skeptical opinion" of your very own???
@sirTittytwister What stuff? Seems like you speak hot air like Deepak. It's even a mystery what kind of mystery he's talking about. What about explaining what is so obvious of what is to come and your data for that conclusion? I don't think you have the right nor the knowledge to assume that I don't have a "skeptical opinion" of my own.
Jean, why did god send his kid to a primitive place without a single roll of toilet paper and not command him to "...not wipe thy arse with thy hand."?
An all knowing and loving god wouldn't do that.

Deepak isn't debating, he's just trying to work the crowd. Oh yeah, and the "science is no longer relevant" line was priceless. What a douche.
beezle13 6 months ago
@ChloeClementine1 Well, about that power that controls one's hand. Do you understand it without science then? If science cannot offer explanations, what is it then that makes people with pneumonia survive these days? If there is a loving god, then why does he allow disease to kill perfectly good, honest, hard working parents, leaving innocent children behind?
kjrunia 6 months ago
@ChloeClementine1 Might I ask, ignorant of what exactly? Einstein may have said that (I don't know in what context, which might be interesting to know on any occasion where quotes are being thrown into the discussion), but I care less about his psychological remarks in the media back then as I do about his math in special and general relativity and his photoelectric effect for which he rightfully won the Nobel prize. Besides, sometimes it's better to ignore intuition: our minds can be fooled!
kjrunia 6 months ago
What purpose does Jean serve in this? She adds nothing to the debate, she is more of a distraction from it. She offers nothing in response to what Sam and Micheal offer. They are talking about one thing and she is off in Lala-land speaking to zebras about how bad does the color red taste.

I haven't even watched the majority of this video yet, but just upon reading some of your comments and rejections, I would like to point out that just because some of you don't understand some of what Deepak and company is trying to say is not reason enough to discredit it, but should be cause for further exploration to try and understand where he is coming from.
moongoddess176 7 months ago in playlist The Nightline Face-Off: Does God Have a Future?
After viewing this video, I'm convinced that your average person just wants to heaar big words and "deep meanings" that doesn't mean SHIT.. Deepak Chopra is full of shit, all of his arguments are circular and ambiguous.. and yet the sheep clap whenever he says something like (consciousness floats upwards like our determination)

Deepak embodies what I fear about woo woo people. The woo woo people express themselves in such vague terms, that, whatever science will come up with, they will always be able to say: That's exactly what we've been telling you all along, except you put it into technical formulas and then think it denies God, while in fact, it proves God almighty power and infinite something something.
kjrunia 8 months ago
I can see what Deepak is trying to say, but, MAN, is he terrible it. In the process of trying to romanticizing his argument, he ends up devaluing it.

it's so clear: what the religious people say: based on what their heroes say, based on how they think it should be, based on the unexplained.
what the scientists say: based on evidence.

science is going to get a huge update,... I'm just fascinated as to how it's going to do this! a very REAL, and NEW dimension to understanding our Universe/Reality/..(god?) I got no problem with accepting to change my View of reality, this is what SCIENCE IS ALL ABOUT BABY!
sirTittytwister 8 months ago
Huh?
ZeonGenesis 8 months ago
@ZeonGenesis .......Deepak is challenging you to go look up some of these things, that YOU DON'T comprehend,... it's nothing to get mad about,.... science hasn't even catergorized this,...because WHEN IT DOES,... it CHANGES the whole ball game!!,... it's coming, though ....
sirTittytwister 8 months ago
@sirTittytwister Did you see that in your crystal ball? Obviously, the only ones who will be able to answer the "unknowns" one day will be scientists as spiritualists will just spout some nonsense mixed with some anecdotes and poetry.
ZeonGenesis 8 months ago
@ZeonGenesis ....no, I don't need a crystal ball, to see what's obvious,... but anyways, give yourself a chance, a genuine one, and go check some of this stuff out,...it's okay, really ...I'd ask you to trust me on this,...but I guess, you'll just have to really make an effort and inquire about this stuff on your own,....who knows, you might even come up with a "real skeptical opinion" of your very own???
sirTittytwister 8 months ago
@sirTittytwister What stuff? Seems like you speak hot air like Deepak. It's even a mystery what kind of mystery he's talking about. What about explaining what is so obvious of what is to come and your data for that conclusion? I don't think you have the right nor the knowledge to assume that I don't have a "skeptical opinion" of my own.
