Jean Harlow is immortal because she was unpretentious- a complete natural. But even she would have admitted second billing in any scene with the marvellous scene stealer, Marie Dressler.
I've always thought Jean was a natural. Funny, sweet and without pretense. I wonder how she would have aged, had she not have died so young? Would she have been as funny as a character actress like Billie Burke, also from DINNER AT EIGHT?
Yeah... fashion does crazy things to lady's brows! I see girls doing similar tings to their brows today... it is weird! So is burning all the color out of your hair! Even worse, burning streaks in your hair!
Just like she did that exaggerated stop when Harlow mentioned reading a book, I think she was very animatedly noticing her bracelets because she was telling us, the viewers comically, that she's got big rocks! Again, that "silent movie" style of acting.
I like at 1;02 when Marie Dressler is comparing her bracelets against Jeans and the exagerated stop when she told her she had read a book...great stuff!
sorry but thats exactly what shes doing because I saw Lionel Barrymore talking about the film and Marie Dressler, and he specifically mentions that scene and the gag of comparing jewellery.

You know I'm still not convinced that she's comparing her bracelet to Jean's. She's looking at her own bracelet, not looking at Jean.

It's hard to judge anything based only on one scene!

I didn't judge anything on one scene. Seen the film hundreds of times and read every single book about her!

Marie Dressler was an "old school" silent film actress I believe That exaggerated stop I think might be left over from that style of acting.

Never noticed her noticing the bracelets before!!

She isn't comparing her bracelet to Jean's. She looks at her jewellery throughout the film because they remind her of 'past' loves..!

Yeah... I do the same thing... I'm always looking at expensive jewelery too--reminds me of all my love affairs!

I stand corrected. Sorry, NonStopRocker. I'll have a closer look at the scene.

The credit goes to the folks who made the original movie! I merely yanked out a couple of little moments that did something for me!
