As an amateur pianist don't play any better jazz than I hear in this clip. Still, I agree the drummer is heavy-handed and he should listen to some crisp and articulate masters like Kenny Clarke, Connie Kay or Shelly Manne for inspiration. He shouldn't forget that Buddy Rich once propelled the whole Basie band with nothing more than a snare drum and a set of brushes...
David Sanborn once threatened to kill a drummer for overusing fills and not paying enough attention to the rhythm; I can guarantee you, if he was at this performance, this drummer would be in a similar position. It is acceptable to bang out notes on occasion to build tension, and a fill every so often is all fine and dandy, but when you overuse banging fills, especially when you use them in EVERY SINGLE MEASURE OF THE SONG... Someone teach that kid how to play time, please.
