@oskunshier As a canadian junior national finalist in the 200m butterfly, I feel like I can provide some advice. You want to develop a good aerobic base so you have fa good fitness level before you start swimming. to get the technique down, try doing some 1 arm fly and side kick. once you have the technique and fitness down, get asss fucked by your coach to reach optimal speed. It worked for me....Good luck :)
@oskunshier the same thing use to happen for me but within 2 weeks it became my favorite stroke. The only way i got better was my summer coach made me do it even if i got tired. You have to go out and do 50s and 75s and 100s and you will start being able to go much longer distances
Arguably the greatest Olympic athlete of all time. Phelps already has 16 total medals including eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His races had the entire world glued to their television sets and clinging on his every stroke. Phelps has transcended the sport unlike anyone else ever has. With just three medals at the London Olympics Phelps will have the most medals all time by any athlete in any sport.
@sadkiss99 then you are not the best of fans considering he has lost a couple of times in 10 years (biedermann in rome, malchow in 2002 pan pacs, 100 fly and free and 400 free in 2005, 200 back in 2006 pan pacs)
@maskedriderghost-nope he was 19. thats when i first heard of michael phelps. i didn't recall his first olympics at 15 but i do remember he was 19 at athens.
i think its cool how you see people competing at the olympics in a speedo brief... yet now 9 years later if you see someone in a brief you think that they must not be taking the swim very seriously among all of the lzr bodys and blue seventys
This was Phelps' first international competition. Only 6 months after this he broke the world record and beat Tom Malchow in the 200 Buttterfly. Phelps is still the youngest male swimmer to break a world record, edging out Thorpe by a month or two.
Phelps was 15 and competing against swimmers 5 to 10 years older than him! Very few male swimmers get to the elite Olympic stage at that age. Thorpe was also a young teen with huge promise and they both became legends!
okay. Olympian at 15. Wow. I;m sure that he didn't even care that he came in fifth. Actually fifth isn't all that bad. They all have to start somewhere. After watching Beijing, this race looks super slow. LOL!
I don't think alot of people realise how incredible this is. Michael was 15 when he made the FINAL of an event at the Olympics. 15 years old! I know swimmers who are 30-40 years and have never reached the finals of an Olympic event. Do you know how fast you have to be to reach the finals? FAST! Super fast! And he did it at 15! To the stupid people who laughed that Michael came 5th, he broke a world record 6 months after this race! So shut the fuck up! Let me see you break a world record at 15!
best technique? best splitting? best swimmer? You know nothing 'olympianlondon2012'. At 15 phelps technique was not great, he improved it after the 2000 olympics.
anyone have a link to the video of him breaking the world record in Fukuoka 2001?

Malchow's stroke looks messy from the front. Incredible swimmer though, one of Phelps' icons growing up.

Michael Phelps was 15 in his first olympics. Look how great he turned out to be.
Fast forward to 2008 and we now have Elizabeth Beisel. I think she was 16 and still beat a lot of people and almost medaled. Watch out for her.
